Life sentences are extremely rare in Australia - as of 2022, there were less than 400 inmates who were given life sentences for hom*cide - that's NATIONALLY.
It is used only for extremely rare cases, usually criminals who accumulate multiple victims. Additionally, "life sentence" doesn't always mean "until the inmate isn't alive". Even a sentence of 10 years can be called a "life sentence" in Australia. The legal system is completely different, particularly as the death penalty was abolished in 1985.
Food for thought: hom*cide rates are more than three times lower in Australia than in the USA per capita (0.86 vs 3.8 per 100,000 in 2021).
I know it still doesn't feel like justice for victims and their families, though. :(

Genuinely asking-but in the US, if our local/city police don’t want to take a report, we can go to the county (sheriffs). If they don’t care, we could then try for the state police. Or the state’s federal agencies (like the Colorado Bureau of Investigations), maybe even FBI-also federal but m for over state lines or multi state crimes. If your local police station won’t help, where else can you go? Can you report to other agencies? I think I’ll get a better answer here than if I Google it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @rlkroset
      @rlkroset 9 дней назад

@@kittikat2318 you can get protection orders put in place with your state police, and reach out to DV support communities, & organisations. They do have a DV goverment fund, up to $15,000 for support to get out of a DV situation, which is obviously amazing and I do applaud this. Must note: almost no advertisement or education is given to women about this, I get what they’d say about why that is, but I think posting DV support phone lines on the inside of our public toilets isn’t going to solve the problem quicker than advertising how someone CAN get out could.
And there’s a few more honourable mentions I’m sure I’m missing, but overall you can only go to your State Police to have legal action taken, if they don’t listen, you can go back again, request to speak to someone else, be asked to submit an online form instead of speaking to someone (if any Australian is ever reading this, beg to put in a statement in person because f that stupid website so hard) and just keep pushing for your protection.
You can get assistance from these DV organisations to get to Women’s shelters, a safe place, a safety plan, support and guidance, and even just someone to talk to, they do very amazing things that our government and police should be doing. And they carry a major load of protecting women, and women’s individual rights in Australia. They do majority of the education in schools and online. It’s like Australian Government and Police have just given up and are relying on these amazing people to do their work, therefore ensuring that perpetrators go free and women live in fear, constantly defending themselves. I personally (as a 24 year old female) had a 60+ year old male yell and swear and throw things at me on one of these walk outs.

I am a woman in Australia. Please please please do more women's stories from Australia 🇦🇺 to expose what is happening over here. 1 woman a week is dying in Australia, but our government CONTINUES to say the system isn't broken 'NOT TRUE'.
That police response is the general response, so women continue to die 😢
It might surprise you that 30 years in prison is actually a high sentence in Australia
    Please do more stories.
    THANK YOU ❤

Australian here. Australia regularly gives light sentences to violent offenders. They are often given another chance at freedom. It’s terrible for future victims. This is such a tragic story. I hope Celeste’s family find some peace.

Kendall, your content on true crime is significantly better then others, and the main reason for this is the fact that you express emotion while going through each story. When you spoke about being a mother and relating to Aggie, it showed real care and sadness for Celeste's story. Thank you for creating content which is full of humanity and emotion. It is disheartening to see others sharing true crime stories in a robotic way.

As a victim of DV and being stalked, I didn't get help from the authorities when I went to them. They literally told me I was overreacting and overthinking. Then, when my abuser did finally attack me, they said there wasn't enough evidence to charge him with ANYTHING. I didn't get a restraining order, DV charges pressed, nothing. All because the law enforcement said there wasn't any evidence.

As someone who lives in Victoria, Australia, it frustrates me to the ends of the earth that my government does not hold the priority of their citizens safety high enough to properly prosecute dangerous criminals, especially those that vocalise intent to offend again. I know that most of you do not live in this area of the world, but I would definitely want to encourage you to please sign the petition and advocate on the behalf of victims in this state. @Boing2699 9 дней назад +3

Unfortunately, this behavior almost always comes from someone you know, even if it’s someone you don’t know well. Even in this case, she barely knew the guy, but that in person interaction at their work was enough for him to start doing this. It’s more likely to come from a friend of a friend or someone you’ve come across a few times than to come from a stranger. And it’s more likely to come from a current or former partner. Most violent crimes and sex crimes are the same way. It isn’t a creepy stranger we all need to look out for, it’s a trusted family friend who gets a little too attached, or a controlling boyfriend, or a friend who freaks out after they don’t get exactly what they want, or an acquaintance who gets too attached. We can’t just hope to avoid awful people, we need to have the skills to recognize signs of a problem before things get dangerous.

I'm so glad to see Celeste's case here talked about by you Kendall! Celeste's mother is an absolute warrior, demanding justice and reform for her daughter. As an Australian, I can absolutely say the system is broken in this country. Huge issues with bail, huge issues with sentencing. We're also in the midst of a DV crisis, so many women and children have died this year. The more awareness we can bring to these issues, the more chance we can prevent deaths like Celeste's.

In Germany a life sentence is only 25 years. If the prisoner is obviously still a danger to society, they can keep him longer. Our justice system is really mild, especially compared to the US, where people get more than humanly possible.
