You didn't use insulated wire

Yeah true old comment but here a full explanation in why this happened: it probably happened because you didn’t use an insulated copper wire, didn’t use electrical tape, you used another type of wire instead of copper. The thing spins because the battery gives the wire an electric field and the magnet intercepts that field pushing against the positive/negative (depends on which way your magnet is) and it spins in the opposite direction attracting and pushing against the magnet

Things you should remember-
1-The coil should be balances properly
2-The ends of the copper wire must be sharpened
3-Don't use any wire other than insulated copper wire
