BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY- SEARCHING FOR THE RAREST BIRD IN BRITAIN- A LESSON IN PATIENCE

  • I'm not usually one to follow the crowds when it comes to photographing rare birds but when one turns up in your own neck of the woods it seems an opportunity too good to miss. No locations have been divulged in the making of this film to protect exposure. Armed with my trusty Tragopan Hokki ground hide I was on a mission to try and capture just a glimpse of one of the rarest birds currently in the British Isles. Join me as I endure what has up to now been the longest session I have endured in my little Hokki hide. I had an amazing day also photographing Common Kingfisher, Little Egret, Grey Heron, Mink and Pheasant.

Cracking video Simon he looks more woodpecker than kingfisher in the last shot. I was just telling my mate about your frying pan Stand ( Il send him the link to this vid.) He was working on a diy project for some sort bench stand for hide,s where tripods are allowed or feasible. You,l have to do a yoga video next to recover from 12hours on your front not easy on a kingcoil mattress in a 4poster bed never mind a ground sheet in a low hide. Take care.

    Great Video Simon,
It is sometimes the case, you go to shoot a certain bird and something else appears as an unexpected surprise. What a beautiful bird the Belted kingfisher is. I suppose as long as there is a fish supply and the weather in winter is not too cold, then the kingfisher will flourish. I loved the footage of the Egret...🙂👍🏻

Nice images Simon. It’s always a great feeling when you get eyes on a bird that’s not common to your area. It’s funny - last weekend I got a shot of a mink as well for the first time. Along the rivers edge as well. Like you say the Kingfishers of any variety are skittish. The Belted is common to my area ( Vancouver, BC) but still not easy to photograph. I’ve only got a handful of decent shots. Anyway thanks for sharing your find and good on you for not revealing exact location.

I’m so fortunate to live in Canada, and as a birder, I truly appreciate that I can walk to the lake across the street from my home and photograph a pair of belted kingfishers. They are so fantastic to watch dive straight into the water.

One visited Staffordshire a few years ago think it was 2005-6 about 400 birders condecended to the reported site one person had a heart attack looking for it so not telling where the site is is good for both man and bird
