40 years of riding bikes and I have seriously never really thought of, or looked at the difference in wheel hight with different tires. That was crazy. Besides the ride, the aesthetics of a bike can suffer from the wrong tire.
As a 41 yr old who just learned how to ride a bike 3 years ago this is really really helpful and answered the question i have been wondering about. Many thanks brother!
When I raced back in the day from 86 to 92 I ran a 20 ×1.75 in the rear and a 20 ×2.125 in the front. I was a big guy for my age and it handled better in the corners. Most of the pros were running the same. Man I miss racing...
Funny, when I was a middle schooler I spent all day hopping up my BMX bikes. Didn't think I'd ever mess around with 20" wheels/tires again but here I'm upgrading my ebike with BMX parts lol
I live in a whole ass different country but I’m just glad phu knows so much i hate walking into a shop where you can tell the owner or person working there knows nothing
I’ve been running cult AK tires for a long time now, I bought every pair of stock that was left since they don’t make them anymore lol. Awesome and informative dude thanks, 2.5 gang for life 🤙
Love how you got the inventory just jammed in there. All the bike shops I've been in have 1 or 2 sets of one style pedal, bar, or tire. Or an empty spot for the item.
FR! Then they say support your local bike shop..How am I supposed to do that when they don't have anything I'm looking for, might aswell save me the trip and order online
Old skool trick I do take the old tube cut the valve stem out slice around the inside and wrap it around the new tube, found I was using less pressure and not getting blowouts quite as often.
Phu here's a good one for you... years ago back in 80s when I was a kid me and my friend put a 24inch mountain bike tube into an 80cc motor bike and it worked OK for about 3weeks
I have a road bike with 700c wheels. I routinely use 26 inch tubes because where I live 700c is rare. Works like a charm. With my skinny tires the smaller tube makes installation easier actually.
good idea. 27" work perfect, some are marked both: "700c or 27" " , but probably would also rare where you are if 700c is rare. i get 27" tubes off amazon for $7.50 cad ea, it's the only size of tube on there(Canadian site) that's not a completely rip off
my diamondback had a bigger front tire but the rear barely made clearance around the v brake arms making it impossible to upgrade to a bigger ones so I used a ziptie to create an arch away from the tire. Was rocking some super skinny knobs now I Ride on a matching set of maxxis torchs with dialed in shimano v brakes
Cool👍I'll keep my old-school Araya's then. The 1.1/8" wide dirt tires are getting changed tho. I was hoping I could get 2.35" street tire to fit on a GT Nora cup pro🤔
Thanks fer tha vid brah. I mostly mess w/road bikes, making resto-mods, restorations, custom builds and wall hangers from too far gone oldies. I also make a few singlespeed, not fixed, (700c) road bikes. Over the years I've learned a lot. Put narrow-ass 19mm vintage Michelin road slicks on wider modern road or hybrid bikes. You end up with what I call the triangular cross sectional profile. It can look cool, but not a real confidence inspiring fit. Alternately, I've mounted 32/35 mm cyclocross or touring tires on super narrow race rims. This achieves the "light bulb" shaped cross sectional profile. Again, looks trick, but kinda feels like they're gonna unbead 'n roll off the rim in a hard turn, and in fact I've had it happen personally, twice. But I had it coming. Reason I searched this topic on YT is I'm building up an old, real old, 1983 Kuwahara BMX. Bought it for $100, still had the fluted alloy seatpost, frame/fork, stem, v- style bars, gold-tone 44 tooth chainwheel and crank arms, original handlebar grips (amazing), and original MX brake lever and caliper. Since the gold tone frame (loop style rear drop-outs) is far from mint, and was actually riden back in the day, I've decided to do a resto-mod with it. I'll keep the bars, Sugino stem, and brake lever. But I've got a set of them skinny racing style rims (20" × 1 3/8"). I used to race a bit as a kid, around 84'-85'. Then got more into flatland freestyle, that is before skate boarding took over my life for about 30 yrs. I remember kids at the track from wealthier family's had these super narrow wheels on their Patterson's and Powerlite's. Usually made by ARAYA or Ambrosio. I thought they looked rad, obviously not for back alley jumping or 1/4 pipe sessions. But I was s light rider then, and now, at 48 yrs, 155 lbs, still a light rider who knows how to land and not demolish wheels. Long story short, I plan to use these modern black race rims on the Kuwahara. Brake caliper reach instantly was an issue, so I went to the road bike brake box, found a TEKTRO that'll work. I love gum/tan wall tires, I had em on my blue SKYWAY mags back then, and now I still run mostly gum/tan wall tires on my road bikes. Just love the look. I also liked the 1980's trend of mounting a slightly larger tire up front, like moto-cross, looks bad ass. I think these narrow rims, which are a larger diameter than standard BMX rims are referred to as ISO 451? Sound right? Offering a nominally similar overall inflated diameter to standard BMX wheels, but far less volume hence, a larger diameter rim. Anyway, the one tire I have is a TIOGA Powerblock 20" × 1 3/8". Probably buy all new rubber, but what I want is a slightly wider, 1 5/8" maybe, tire on the front. Is that s thing? My Google searches are not showing me what I want. For this build, it's all about the look. All I'm gonna do with it is ride it to 7-11 for smokes, or the beer store. Then park it with my stable of other beautiful builds. I plan on ordering a chromoly layback seatpost, to which I'll mount a full carbon fibre roadbike saddle. Need to order a nice 25mm seatpost clamp, that'll be expensive. Also want modern, tech'd out looking pedals, maybe carbon fiber, if that's a thing. After peeling the scabby decals, polishing the gold-tone frame, I'll order period correct Kuwahara replacements. Truth be told, I never cared for the rear brake only thing on BMX bikes. I dig on a front brake only, way more fun...stoppies, end-o's, all kinds of fun stuff, plus, it makes you actually think about if you really need to slow down. Probably not. If you read all this, thanks. Maybe you know if tires in this category come in at least two widths so I can achieve the subtle effect I'm going for. I know it's a lot, but you should see my roadbikes. People pay me pretty good money to blast, paint, build up one of a kind vintage road bikes. I just wanna apply my art to BMX. See ya.
As I've learned with sportbikes, if you put a wider tire on a smaller rim it will create a peak in the center from pushing the sidewall in which makes leaning abrupt and not smooth. Something to think about on a street type of tire like that
Me riding bikes for 37 years & being a mid-school rider I prefer one brand of tire the Haro multisurface 1. X 275 & I always buy them in bulk & when I do I,ll wipe them down inside & out with Armor All just so they keep for a long time wile sitting on the shelf & I,ll do the same with grips to & I,ll buy them in bulk also & wipe them down with Armor All also . When I need new grips or a tire I,ll clean off the Armor All & let them air dry for a day or 2 & I have no problem doing this , there’s no slip from me putting it on once I clean them & they still feel & grip like new . I still have a bunch of Jive handle grips from 1989 & a bunch of Haro multi-surface tires from 1989 as well & I know for a fact that Jive went out of business & Haro doesn’t make the multi-surface tires in 1. X 275 anymore with the tan gum line side walls . I,ll die before I use up my grips & tires I swear & I have all my mid- school Haro,s that I had when I was a kid , I kept all 5 of them & I,m good on tires & grips for at least the next 30 years , see back when I was a kid I was smart with my money & 2 of are local bike shops went out of business & they both were having liquidation sales & that’s when I bought my grips & tires like 60% off so I had to snatch them up . Every thing is still like new thanks to the Armor All I put on them to protect them , yes I prefer the skinny tires to the big fat ones & I really don’t care for the sound these new tires make wile riding the pings & the pops when you land , nope that’s not for me , I want to hear the tick of my free spin hub , that’s what I,m use to & I,ll stick with that .
Please tell us which tires are best for mag wheels such as Skyway Tuffs. I bought 20x1.75 Panaracer tires for Skyway Tuffs but they just won't center. Tried soap, massaging, gradual inflation etc, still lopsided. Its emabarassing spending $2 on a bmx and still have wobbly tires. I also feel it when I ride on smooth road at 12mph. Checked the rims, rims are spin straight.
It's 2024, and for a person who's putting some 29" 144 spoke rims on a 26"bike... this video came to my feed right on time!!! Needed to know how fat of a tire i could get on the rim and it not rub.
I wish I lived in your area. That shop is a wet dream 🤤 We don't have any shops like yours in Manchester anymore... We have to order everything online which can take days.
Snafu rim jobs had 2.10 I know for sure but I think they had even wider back in the day but you're right it was rare, I believe they were the only wider tire
Great video. This was very helpful for me. I have a 1999/2000 Dyno Compe I'm working on. I got some mag wheels with 2.4" tires. Dont think the tires will work ! Hard to find 1.75 or 1.95
Hey guys I just ordered a We the People Hybrid Utopia. On the WTP site it says it accepts 2.3” tires. But on other sites it says nothing about that. I have 2.4” tires, will they work?!? Thanks for your help guys!
I have a "94 GT Pro series with a 1.75 in the back and a 2.1 in front (both GT skin wall tires) that should be replaced. Also have a "94 PK Ripper with GT skin walls (both 2.1) that should be replaced. I was thinking of putting two GT LP5 110 PSI tires on the GT. Since 2.2 looks to be the smallest size of these tires, I suspect they should work? Any reason why I should I avoid these tires or their size? On the Ripper, I was thinking of the same GT LP5 tires, the Odyssey Aitken (2.25 size) tires, or the Odyssey Super Circuit tires (2.1 size). Why are the Super Circuit tires so expensive, and could the "foldable" bead present any problems down the line? I initially thought about getting the SE racing Cub tires, to retain the old school look on the PK, but those skin walls are not that durable, and it sucks to have to replace them because those skin walls start breaking down. Thank you!!
Question . I have a 2021 big ripper 29 . I want to go skinny. Around 1.75 wide tire or less. In color can you please point me in the right direction. I'm lost
Might be possible to put a link in the chain to fit a slightly larger tire size in some cases (worked for my recent build). Why did the old school bmx race bikes run narrower tires on the back and wider ones on the front? It seems like the back would take more abuse and thats where the fatter tire might give a bit more cushion.
Since you're talking about fittings of parts. Please do the sprocket sizes on frames... I would like to change my frame because 28t sprocket doesn't align properly with the cassette driver. I am wondering if fit mix tape v2 or s&m holy diver can accommodate a 28t or more...thanks.
size of sprocket does not have anything to do with chain alignment. you use spacers on the bottom bracket spindle to determine where your cranks/sprocket sit. alf made a video not too long about about how to install bottom brackets which also shows spacing the cranks properly.
@@bmxscape i am sorry if you got confused... what i wanted to say is, there are frames that you can't fit 28t or bigger because it will touch/hit the chain stay... and if you'll use a spacer, the alignment of the chain from the sprocket to the driver will be too much off set... that is why i am asking which frame can accommodate 28t - 30t sprocket that will not be off set with the rear driver. I hope i explained it better this time.
I m Engineer, let me tell u few thng 1. In World of BMX light R is Better 2. Aluminum is Best. Steel is Better Othrs r just Good 3. Thin R Tyre helps u go Fast R Bit Thick R than Road Tyre is enough I like the way u Simplify evry thng
Cool vid, love this channel! Question, I have a 2021 Mongoose L100 with 2.4" tires and want to run a front brake cable thru the stem and fork but I know there will not be enough clearance with these tires. What size do you recommend? I don't want to go to small and was thinking of trying 2.2"
The fatter the tire, the higher psi has to be to keep them from rolling off the rim under nonconcentric force. Good news is they have more give even with higher pressure so you don't notice on drops
I have those Williams tires (only in purple)! They're an LP tire with a max PSI of 60, so they have a softer landing than an HP tire. They're also really quiet on the road (compared to my original Primo V-Monsters)
Hi my brother have a bmx bike, and we are going to order online a new tires(we need to order coz there is no avail.tires for his bike in his area,Philippines) He have a 20x2.30 tires mag wheels. Can we order or does it fit with a 20x1.95 or 20x2.40 tires? Thanks in advance! Edit:sorry yah I need to ask him first what the size or width of his bike frame and mags 😅
40 years of riding bikes and I have seriously never really thought of, or looked at the difference in wheel hight with different tires. That was crazy. Besides the ride, the aesthetics of a bike can suffer from the wrong tire.
@COSMO smaller tires are for bmx pump track racing. big tires are for park and street bmx tricks.
The ultimate tires are Vee Speedsters 20X2.00 awesome tires. Roll fast. Grip well and wear long.
in that 40 years, h
As a 41 yr old who just learned how to ride a bike 3 years ago this is really really helpful and answered the question i have been wondering about. Many thanks brother!

You can still race, but gotta be more careful mate.
Dat guy knows a lot about his trade! Love it
4:03 is EVERYTHING you need to know about fitting tires on different size rims... Priceless info! 🔥🔥🔥

I trust Phu, he's the guy i would refer to before i decided to buy any parts of bmx
Phu makes me nervous swinging frames and wheelsets over the glass
not only now, every video...xD
He is true... I'm essembled 2.3/2.4 tube on 3.0 tire... It's working with no problem at all...

Dropping gems like a thief on the run with these videos. Thanks Phu!
Fisted that girthy Cox frame with the weirdest look in his eye tho 😂

Great info, I watched it twice just so I didn't miss anything!
Many vert riders back in the late 80s including myself rode 2.125 and wider pool tires back then.
11:04 LOL Pretty much 😂 once my shipment got fucked up and I got 18" tubes instead of 20" I just stretched em in there and they were fine.
Cool👍I'll keep my old-school Araya's then. The 1.1/8" wide dirt tires are getting changed tho. I was hoping I could get 2.35" street tire to fit on a GT Nora cup pro🤔
Thank you again for these videos looking to get new tires needs to know what size I needed
I use 20x2.1 tube to my tires bhive 2.4size and its work really fine.
I knew that was a Cinema just by the thumbnail,One of the best looking tires on the market
Awesome video Alfredo & Phu thanks.
Thanks for the appreciation Scott!
BITD my OS race bike came with a 1.75 on the back and a 2.125 on the front 👍

Love it. My street sweeper v2 tire looks smaller than the originals I need a caliper to measure. They look tremendously different.
Love phu!
That’s the best way to find out for sure!
The sidewall is narrower/rounded on the V2 so it doesn’t catch while grinding and the center contact patch is wider on the V2.

20x1.95 should fit that old school frame
Is your bike shop still operating as well your website

Speed. The front was only fatter to prevent washing out
Since you're talking about fittings of parts.
I'm using cult dehart tire👌👌👌
what is the bigger tire i can fit on 25mm inner rim? cani use 20 x 30 tire on 25mm inner rim?
I Wish I Seen This Video Before I Tried To Put My Camo Cult Vans 2.40 Tires On My Old School Dyno GT… 😒

What if you normally ride 2.25 and want to go to 2.4 is that possible
If someone could answer me this, I’d be really appreciative. What is the maximum tyre width that is compatible with an odyssey 1999 brake?
How wide does my bike have to be on the back to fit 20” x 2.35
Cool vid, love this channel! Question, I have a 2021 Mongoose L100 with 2.4" tires and want to run a front brake cable thru the stem and fork but I know there will not be enough clearance with these tires. What size do you recommend? I don't want to go to small and was thinking of trying 2.2"
you could get wider forks
First:Always with the best Vids 👌
You da man!
can we put an 18 inch tube on a 20 inch wheel?
Hey Phu, look into TRIALS stuff. HUGE back rims and tires.good place to start is 90's Monty bikes
Kudos for talling about the inner tube so people know. Btw you always manage to have a gt product in there, nice, lol
The fatter the tire, the higher psi has to be to keep them from rolling off the rim under nonconcentric force. Good news is they have more give even with higher pressure so you don't notice on drops
Im so glad phu is holding bmx down
can i put springler fork to a modern bmx ?
I have those Williams tires (only in purple)! They're an LP tire with a max PSI of 60, so they have a softer landing than an HP tire. They're also really quiet on the road (compared to my original Primo V-Monsters)
I follow you!, awesome information!, just like all your vids! Thanks
Get a micargi bronco or ruff cycle you are totally correct
Could I mount a 20x4 inch tire on a 2inch rim?
Great video and info. Tires are tires just like cars you can go narrow and be Hella flush or go wide and be Hella thick
What about an old Mongoose Supergoose from 79 or 80?
"...'guys'..."
😂😂😂
Hell ya the tire and tube expand to fill the rim.
my favourite part is when Phu says "but guyz"
Alfredo. What do you think about the shadow creeper tires?
They’re solid!
Hi my brother have a bmx bike, and we are going to order online a new tires(we need to order coz there is no avail.tires for his bike in his area,Philippines)
He have a 20x2.30 tires mag wheels. Can we order or does it fit with a 20x1.95 or 20x2.40 tires?
Thanks in advance!
Edit:sorry yah I need to ask him first what the size or width of his bike frame and mags 😅
Why can't we find any color options on 29 inch tires for sale to personalize our bikes😫?
I also know that skinny tires are faster too when they have a 90 to 110 psi max range
Where is you're shop located?
16483 Magnolia St. Westminster, CA 92683
It's ok if 20 x 1.95 tube and the tire was 20 x 2.40?
so i can fit 20 x 3.0 tire on 25mm internal rim?
Question i have a 20x1.75 folding bike can i fit a 20x2.125 tire just for the rear wheel?
