There might be some unicorns (good shops) out there, but in my experience these little biweekly meetings were nothing more than owner/management giving a long winded speech about how we should just work harder for less. Then after wasting the first half hour of the day they’d retreat back to their offices to go shop for a new Harley.
I used to get annual performance appraisals, but one foreman told me he could hire 2 young Trainees for what I’m paying you! Go for it, I’ll hav a better job within the hour!
Damn, that’s one dumb ass foreman to say that! Sure, he could hire 2 young techs for a veteran tech pay but then he’d have 2 people who can’t do what a master tech can do!
I’ve worked at 2 shops that gave regular evaluations. It really is nice to get the feedback and recognition (pay raises) for your effort. 1 dealership in between those 2 never said anything to us except “if you want a raise, flag more hours”.
As a young tech, getting yelled at was normal . I moved to shop to shop for many years till I became a fleet manager and head tech. Now, I'm starting my own automotive shop in the middle of next month.
Honestly. If every shop had management like this… this industry probably wouldn’t be as bad as it is. An environment that builds rather than destroys makes or breaks you
They always say when you go to the employee with he / she needs to improve on go with ideas of what you think will help, the meeting goes better if it is constructive and anger is not involved. Good topic for the current job market, it might help retain the good techs and improve the techs that are close to leaving by whatever means.
Techs are penalized for going to training. More training and certs mean you are now qualified to do x warranty work and y recalls. Who wants to take those classes so they can be hosed by warranty time?

Thank you thank you!
Because you have feelings these days. Gotta worry about the feels. Especially in the south.

In the right environment this can work. Correct ownership and management
I learned many years ago... criticism is good !! And, If it fits, wear it, if it doesn't, throw it away.
