I used to sing at karaokes a lot when I was a teen, but one day my voice just stopped coming out in front of people. I thought it was just because of voice changes during puberty, but later (like 10 years later) I discovered that I suffer from social anxiety. After doing therapy for 2 years, I can kind of sing in front of people again.

@@quwane it’s normal because social anciety doesn’t really make sense. You know you should be okay woth certain things but you can’t bring yourself to overcome them. That makes it worse at least in some cases. So you got it right :)
Also you can “catch” it later in life due to events and stuff. It can also flow in and out periodically. It depends! It doesn’t always look the same.

@@quwane social anxiety can be developed by a lot of factors, especially during puberty because you start getting more self conscious than as a kid. You aren´t born with it and part of social anxiety is an irrational fear of rejection, doesn´t need to make sense

I have been noticing that pretty much everything you sing is without tension, for a long time now. A month or two ago I finally just started really digging into the fundamentals and the “sensation” of my voice as you always put it and the changes I’ve made are insane!
In the past, once I started tensing up I had to take a break, but now I can mostly consciously call back the feeling of a relaxed note and get rid of the tension!
For anyone else that read this far, thank you. But maybe it’s time that you start from the bottom again, and learn PROPER technique. Trust me, it’s so worth it

I already do this so much, I'm barely singing the song as it was recorded! There's a fine line between grounding and bailing out. I think I'm just bailing because I don't have the capability. The worst thing is when people around you think you have a good voice and you feel pressure to live up to that, so you bail out more so you don't get exposed for all your weaknesses. Human voice is pure vulnerability - and I struggle with that most of all.

This is fantastic. I recently found myself just totally unable to sustain a note for a length of time that used to be fairly easy for me and I could NOT figure out what was going on. I received the advice to sustain for the same length of time BUT to alternate between two notes instead of sustaining just one. Seems so ridiculous because it’s the same amount of breath for the same amount of time but somehow just that sensation of going from one note to the other relaxed my brain and my body and I was then able to switch back to sustaining the one note whilst holding the sensation of alternating between the two notes in my body and PRESTO no problemo 😃. This has the same feel to it. I like it.

The fact that SkidRow is the first I sang as a toddler, all through my childhood, through puberty, into early adulthood. But when I start training my vocals the biggest disconnect I experienced and I started losing my voice to was when I was singing Skid Row. The notes I used to hit with QuickSand Jesus, Wasted Time, and Darkened Room I couldn’t hit anymore. Let me tell you how devastating this was for me. I’ve just started singing some SkidRow again after three years and after finding MY voice and locking down my breath control. The disconnect now is caused by fear even though I know exactly how my voice moves and which of my registers meet Sebastian’s range. It is equally devastating.

Funny thing, I’ve been singing Bring Me To Life for quite some time and I always stayed up in the higher range for most of it. Listening back to the original today, I noticed how often Amy actually drops down to rest her voice on a lower note for the fragment of a second just like you demonstrated it here. I never noticed before! I knew about this concept of resting your voice to increase your stamina delivering a challenging song, but the interesting thing is, it happens so subtly, the listener barely notices, if at all. Unless it’s been brought to their attention. I’ll ”hear” songs differently from now on, I’m certain of that. Thank you, once again!

Nice lesson. He moved around and mixed a lot. When he was young.
You have to work it out. Best you can. It can be done. But he was special then. There was fry and placements, high even on the fry and a difficult fluidity, basically a specialized version of bel canto helped him a lot. He was singing high in choirs when he was young.
But that resonance, fluidity and almost operatic sound at times he played with. Was a version bel canto training.
Yeah his teacher to really free him up was mine. Don Lawrence.
I can do a lot of what bach does but not everything he did, the way he did it then.

I've noticed something I like to do, to slip lower (usually when I'm singing higher - ie I slip in my mid-range, the chest one) and then I jump back up to the high parts.
I guess I'm doing it too slow, as my vocal couch is usually telling me not to do it, as it can be heard at least partially and often it sounds like a long slide-up.
I know that often it doesn't sound good, so I don't argue my coach attempts to correct it at all.
But the thing I like when I'm grounding is that I tune to resonance much easier when I'm comfortable, and somehow it's easier to transfer that resonant position higher (not always though sometimes the positions are too different I guess).
But that resonance grounding I think sometimes is like an anchor that makes me push my chest voice higher instead of building a mix.
I haven't found a balance or the technique to switch them yet :/

I just wanted to add, Sebastian has a naturally higher speaking and singing voice than you do. Listen to his interviews where he's speaking. He sounds like a little kid. So some of his abilities to stay up there stem from his natural vocal range. It's also why most singers struggle to cover him note for note. I can't think of another singer who has a speaking voice like Sebastian Bach. Not one. Maybe they're out there and I'm just not aware. The only singer I've heard who actually nails those songs was his replacement in Skid Row, Erik Gromwell. In fact, I like his voice better. BTW, he's a guy you should interview or collaborate with. What a talent. But I digress. My point is SB just has a naturally higher voice. So it's amazing to me that you can get as close as you do. My voice is even deeper than yours. So thanks for the tip. I'll try that out.

I have a type of disconnectedness between my mixed voice and normal voice. I physically cannot increase the even more amount of cat or any other character in my voice that's good for mixing. I have a real loud head voice and kind of a mixed voice sound but I actually just cannot connect it even with the squeakiest of my chest voice
It feels like i have TOO much cat texture even in my normal voice and it's TOO loud to smoothly transition into a higher mix
I can go incredibly deep with a warmed up voice and incredibly high, but I literally cannot connect it all together because it feels literally just like very different voices
I can't feel my head voice at all when going lower with it and it just breaks if i support it well
belting also comes at a high cost of my voice tearing into broken up loud vocal fry
Sometimes it's also hard to control that cat voice because i don't know when i'm pushing too much or not enough
it's been like that forever man but i'm not complaining. I'm just sharing. I don't have a chance to go to a class either. The only thing I'm scared of is that when the times comes to sing out all the emotions I have (it can happen in the future), I won't have anything to express myself with, even my own voice

i got a question, is it normal to struggle with sustaining notes? i feel like its so much easier for others, i can barely hold a note it always wobbles.
also because i didnt have this issue before my voice dropped, does how deep your voice is affect agility and control? cus i could always sing much mroe freely when i was a kid but now its a struggle to do runs and all that. is it true that ppl with higher voice have it easier with control and agility?

    • @chrisliepe
      @chrisliepe  4 месяца назад +2

It IS normal for your voice to wobble if you’re not supporting your voice correctly! Voice type has nothing to do with agility or stamina but many people with lower voice types will force their voice to sing in areas that are not comfortable yet without proper training or mindsets and this hampers agility in a big way! I’d encourage you to join my free course linked in the video description and I’ll help you get the foundation you need so you’re no longer experiencing these issues :)

You’re hilarious my friend. And spot on. Just because you can run a 1/4 mile in X-seconds doesn’t mean you can run a mile in 4x-seconds…. right now. And maybe you don’t need to.
