Ohhh my, I don't know quite why, maybe the overall feeling of satisfaction, but this is one of my favorite videos ever!!! I loved Cali and her playing, her chasing, all the attention she got, and how you two seemed really in synch. That porch is grand!!! It looks so comfy, feels like it too, and everything felt so glorious. The autumn is on the way, so the temps are perfect, I don't know, but I just loved this video. I've made that crumble so many times, with exactly those ingredients, right down to the maple sugar. Not too sweet, just right...even that was perfect, and those meals, I love how you cook! Love your new side porch, Shawn! You and your family are going to enjoy that great addition so much. I understand your comment about how that area used to be only used as a pass-through and now it has a new purpose. Over the last few years my husband has turned our large backyard into a lovely environment with a huge vegetable garden, greenhouse, potting shed, private outdoor shower and studio cottage with a sleeping loft but there was one section of waste: a large, heavily shaded area tucked underneath enormous cedar trees where absolutely nothing grew; like you mentioned, we’d simply use it as a pass-through. He finally decided to build a covered 10 x 20 foot deck there and my goodness! Suddenly we had this lovely spot to enjoy that never existed before. It’s turned into our favorite backyard delight and I cast-iron cook all summer out there; it’s a perfect spot for dinner parties, quiet breakfasts and afternoon rests. I’m sure you’ll be amazed at how much you find yourself enjoying your new porch! 😎

Hi Shawn, it looks as you are still living the wild life dream ,you are very lucky to live the way you do ,it’s so close to nature without the pains of everyday hassles of the modern world. I’ve now gone into retirement having worked in the health services for over 35 yrs , I don’t know if you recall I had my back broken eights months ago by a patient, it’s been a hard road to recover and I’m now back on my feet , and living my own life long with my wife . Your channels have been very comforting as time has past in my recovery , I look forward to seeing the colours of the fall as it was colourful last year . Cali's huffing is the best background noise, with the crackling of the fire too. That haunting sound of the common loon, gosh, that birdcall creates a vast sense of space over the water. I'm always moved by it, and it reminds me of the Native American flutes too.

When we lived in West Virginia, we had electric base board heaters in the house but rarely used them. Luckily we also had a big wood burning stove that was our main source of heat when it started getting cold. We went through about 7 cords each winter. There was a fan on the wood stove to blow the heat to the back of the house. Loved that about my little house in the woods, right near the Appalachian Trail. You probably go through a lot more since you use it for all your cooking as well. Thanks again Shawn!

I sure hope you are happy with it because you are truly living the dreams of so many who aren't in the position to live as you do. I made the mistake of building a home within the limits of the concrete jungle, so with having that and being disabled and confined to a wheelchair it kind of prevents me from living the life I dreamed of, so if you don't mind, I'll keep an eye on you and live vicariously through your lens. Again, I absolutely love your home and your setup, even right down to the perfect dog.

0:22, i recognize the flower stalk right of center here. it's mullein. if you dry the leaves (and flowers) it makes a great tea for inflammation. set a little of it to smolder and the smoke will reduce sinus inflammation and lung congestion. careful tho, it WILL make you cough and your eyes water. not toxic, it's just stout.. i grow it here in oklahoma for just that reason. nice to know it grows just about anywhere.
I also spotted the Mullein (from Florida) and have leaves dried for winter colds. Breathing the water infused tea will help with colds, the soft absorbent leaves are also called cowboy toilet paper and was once used for diapers. Fill a jar with the flowers, cover them with honey, and you have a great tonic for winter ills. Have you found any wild honey? I'm new here but will catch up with all the old vids soon. Great site!

The cabin is absolutely beautiful and rustic. The porch adds a certain ambiance that is quaint. Screened in it would be a great place to sleep in the summer.. I am sure Callie would love it also. I don’t know how to express what I’m feeling. Pretty awesome, love the idea of just a building away with no one to hang over shoulder asking for money and telling you what to do and how to do it! I’m talking about building inspectors by the way;) yes they have a job to do. But three years ago I started my dream of building a house all by myself on my land in the country in the Cariboo. (British Columbia) and let me tell you the legal requirements for building out her is mind baffling and a real damper on “the dream”. In short I love your dream reality! Thanks for sharing.

I sure hope you are happy with it because you are truly living the dreams of so many who aren't in the position to live as you do. I made the mistake of building a home within the limits of the concrete jungle, so with having that and being disabled and confined to a wheelchair it kind of prevents me from living the life I dreamed of, so if you don't mind, I'll keep an eye on you and live vicariously through your lens. Again, I absolutely love your home and your setup, even right down to the perfect dog.

0:22, i recognize the flower stalk right of center here. it's mullein. if you dry the leaves (and flowers) it makes a great tea for inflammation. set a little of it to smolder and the smoke will reduce sinus inflammation and lung congestion. careful tho, it WILL make you cough and your eyes water. not toxic, it's just stout.. i grow it here in oklahoma for just that reason. nice to know it grows just about anywhere.
Also, the flowers can be put into oil to steep and used for ear infections.

I also spotted the Mullein (from Florida) and have leaves dried for winter colds. Breathing the water infused tea will help with colds, the soft absorbent leaves are also called cowboy toilet paper and was once used for diapers. Fill a jar with the flowers, cover them with honey, and you have a great tonic for winter ills. Have you found any wild honey? I'm new here but will catch up with all the old vids soon. Great site!

I can easily understand why your porch is quickly becoming the favorite part of the cabin. The cabin is absolutely beautiful and rustic. The porch adds a certain ambiance that is quaint. Screened in it would be a great place to sleep in the summer.. I am sure Callie would love it also. Keep up the creativity. What you have designed and built so far is beautiful, and functional. Love watching the videos. Reminds me of the camping and traveling we did with Mom and Dad when we were young.

Poaches are the best, especially at both ends of the day. Coffee in the early morning, listening to the woods wake up, something to sip at the end of the day, watching the shadow blend into darkness. Nice.

I don’t know how to express what I’m feeling. Pretty awesome, love the idea of just a building away with no one to hang over shoulder asking for money and telling you what to do and how to do it! I’m talking about building inspectors by the way;) yes they have a job to do. But three years ago I started my dream of building a house all by myself on my land in the country in the Cariboo. (British Columbia) and let me tell you the legal requirements for building out her is mind baffling and a real damper on “the dream”. In short I love your dream reality! Thanks for sharing.
