Very good guide. I could not be bothered to change all those caps. I am happy to confirm that by replacing the OPamps with NE5532's all the hiss has gone. Changed the pedal from a pile of S**** to a very useable device. I kinda feel that the adjustments have more range now. Not about to swap the chips back for an objective test though. Glad to help man. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the replacement chips will draw more power. So if you're using batteries, be prepared to change them more often. Power supply people won't have that problem.
That may explain why the other chips were in there in the first place. I just could not figure out why Boss would want to save a few cents and put cheaper op-amps in. Perhaps those sales people that business let do all the engineering these days said battery life is more important! I have isolated DC supply so not an issue for me.

Nice video! I just did this mod to my GE-7...used 5532s and yes, made quite a big difference. Kudos from a fellow Canuck eh! (no mistaking that accent lol)
This is really old by now but there is some good advice in here for these older analog through hole boards. The TL022 ICs can be replaced with 062, 072, or 082s if you can't find others. As a general rule the higher you go the quite, but may draw more current. In fact they can replaced with any pin compatible dual op amp. I notice Tantalum caps can sound differnt in a EQ path and so long as they test good, that the values have not drifted, I'd leave them. Ceramics can be nosier in the audio path and a good candidate for using metal film\poly(film) or even mica for pF values. 🍻
I am very late to this party as always,but I just got a "like new" GE-7 yesterday and its got some noise..I haven't got to crank up the volume on my rig yet,but thats tomorrow. If it has excessive noise I will do the 3 chip replacement and go from there...should be just fine..instead of sending it off and pay who knows how much.. Great Job Here !

@@ezzye5 Mostly cost. They'll both function. The machine tooled ones are generally easier to use, especially if you're building pedals on stripboard, but it really doesn't matter.
I made this mod to old made in Taiwan version and it worked really well. Now did the same to old made in Japan one and something is wrong. The sound is muffled even if the pedal is off or on. Could it be that these components are not suitable for older japanese ones of there is some other problem?
It's hard to say. Maybe the older japanese ones had different chips that aren't pin-for-pin compatible? Otherwise, all you can really do is check your soldering and make sure no tracks got broken, and no bridges happened. Good luck man.
Should this mod work with the vintage GE7s that use the 12V PSU? I installed sockets for the ICs and tried a few NE5532s and the LED never lit up. It'll still work like normal if I throw the old op amps back in. From what I've read the 12V psu is dropped down to 9V so I'd assume the new op amp rails are still receiving the correct power.
I haven't seen a schematic so I can't say for sure whether the power is dropped. It's weird that it's causing the LED to go out though... Definitely something going on there.
Another question if you don't mind answering. About the capacitors you swapped in, what are they values base on? Were they of the same value as the previous ones just in different models? Or did you increase/decrease the values?
I think I should reiterate: This is not my mod, I found this online, and decided to do a video for it. Having said that, I *think* they're the same values, just better quality parts, but don't quote me on that.
I double checked, one of the caps is slightly off from the original value, but all the other caps are identical, just different materials. I'm assuming those are also to help reduce the noise from the eq bands.
Fantastic mod! And superbly explained and detailed in this video. I have an excellent bass preamp that I would love to reduce the hiss on and I was just wondering if similar train of thought could be applied to making it a little quieter? Anyone think it's possible? BTW there is an EQ just like the boss kicking around out there with no noise or hiss called the Biyang EQ-7. It's also cheaper than the boss. No hiss. One of the best things I've bought in years, sounds great and build quality is excellent.
Great instructional video! However i have a minor problem here, i somehow managed to disconnected the grey wire that attached on P4 on the PCB, the pedal now doesn't starts and i have no idea where it should be connected to. Would you kindly shed some light on this?
Hey man sorry for the late reply. On mine, the grey wire from P4 connects to the input jack. Same lug as a darker grey wire (but not the same lug as the black wire.) Hope that helps!

Now i have another problem, i have mod my ds2 with wampler mod, based on your another video, put everything as listed and the pedal works, but the output is VERY weak when distortion activated 😅
Please, I wanted to modify my Boss pedals so when I connect my pedalboard to the power, they always come in the on position, without losing the function on and off. When I call them they always come off and I have to start one by one. I already got a modified pedal where the handmaker made this change, but I have no idea how it was Would you have any idea what to do?

Hey man. I'm not familiar with a GE-7 with 4 chips. It sounds to me like you would want to change the three IR chips for noise, as the 4558 isn't that bad. However, don't take my word for it, you're gonna have to research a bit and make sure. Good luck with it dude!

@@jimyjoegingerale Desoldering is much easier with the proper tools. Look for a desoldering pump and/or desoldering braid. They will make your life so much easier.
Why do 50% of ge7 owners say they get no hiss? On my pedal I only have to nudge down any of the faders 1 dB before the noise gets out of control..... anyways, thanks for tutorial I ordered the IC’s. Hope I don’t screw it up. I am going to try without sockets because too lazy to make another order.
Thanks mate, great advice... hey I don’t know if you do electronics as a job or anything but my pc blew out like 3hard drives, my blu ray drive and external sound card in 1 hit and after hunting about on the internet I am leaning towards hopefully it’s some TVS diodes that have blown, I can snipe them out to get power back into them apparently? Only problem is after taking all the covers off of them I don’t really know what I can snip away to try it out? Do you know anything about this? And if you do would you be interested in my sending you some money for each drive you can help me locate the diodes on? If it’s an impossible job then I completely understand but would love to get all my gear back, I lost like 500+£ worth of gear in 1 go! Cheers ! Looking forward to trying out this boss pedal though I have some tracking I would like to get on with, with no hiss
I don't know if the cap changes work with the GEB7, but I'm pretty sure the idea of changing the IC's to lower noise ones works. Use your own discretion.
I usually sell him drugs but today I’m repairing his pedal for him. This poor sap has a day job and no electrical engineering expertise! What can I say, I try to help out my community where I can.
Shouldn't be very expensive. Depends on where you get your parts from really. But all in should be less than 10 bucks - unless you're going for expensive chips.

Most of the cap changes are the same values, just different/better materials. So it won't fiddle much with the eq range, just the noise.

Yeah. It can take surprisingly little to damage a chip if you're not careful.

+peavey2 I used 8 pin DIP sockets. You can use strip sockets (4 per side) if you like, but I find the 8 pin sockets the easiest.
Why change the cap values though?
I believe that the cap values are changed so they're higher quality, rather than different values, which should also help a little bit with the noise.

Good luck man. Just make sure you don't heat the IC's too long and you should be fine. Alternate legs to keep the heat away from one spot.

Congrats on installing fake OP2134's. Most sold online are counterfeit. You can tell because yours are squared with no recessed notch at the end
