CRASHING at 30mph... road rash on my nipple?!

- First rule of bike racing: always protect your front wheel. I had a lapse in judgement and checked the gap at an inopportune time. Will definitely ride a break with Dennis again.

I love these cat 5 crit videos. Can't get enough of them.
best comment. ever . cat 5 meme :D
LOLZ...spit out my water!
Been there done that... Ouch
@@celilcetiner is that really cat 5?? Id hate to see the higher levels 😱
Don't ride it too hard 🙄
Kudos for recognizing the mistake, Humble! you sir are the reason I love this channel so much. get well, looking fwd to the new update
He was being sarcastic tho...
Compared to the other crash videos, which I felt were pretty bad, here you explain the situation well and educate us why this happened. This is more in line with your channel in general and how I want a crash video to be. Well done and keep the videos coming!
You forgot to add that Dennis looked over his right shoulder at the same time you looked over your left shoulder.
Wtf was he even looking right while riding in the right side gutter?!?!?!?!?
Right!?
@@nealm6764 that was my confused question.
Yeah , that is racing for ya. Dennis had to replace his bike too :(. Glad you're alright and Dennis says he be back soon, no surgery. You guys are both great riders and sometimes this happens to very experienced riders. Says a lot about your character to not just blame Dennis. Great videos as always.
I'm very glad to hear about him not needing surgery, but sorry to hear about his steed. (Excuse for an upgrade, at least?)
Sorry to hear about the bike, hopefully Dennis gets out of CAT5 and learns when you flick left, the person behind you is coming on your left.
Paul Marshall replaced his bike? That’s all it took to finish it off?
@@bushrakhan1529 that's carbon for you
All the blocking really doesn't seem worth it... if the guy has a run on you, let him. If you're racing cars, blocking makes a little more sense because a touch isn't gonna hurt anything but on a bike, one touch could mean a nasty fall.
Every cyclist want to ask:
"How was the bike?"
fine, other than a scuffed saddle and bar tape
exactly !
Got hit by a speeding 4Runner. Cannondale didn't get a scratch. I got SORE muscles for a week. (Cannondale makes good stuff!)
I'm impressed at how quickly you were able to get your foot out to break your fall. I would have hit the pavement shoulder-first before I even knew I was falling!
real footage of you taking a nap
Agreed with 'cycling is inherently dangerous sports.' But we love it and will come out for AVN.
im using your video to educate my rider
they’re 12-17 years old
drawing stick figure still blurs them
all of ur videos really helped
right know im planning their routine and still identifying each other potential
thank you
lots of love from MALAYSIA
Class act! Seriously C L A S S A C T. Not many recognize their mistakes, and only very few will use these resources to teach us a lesson and build up from here. Thanks!
Also, in the freeze frame where you are looking back, the guy is looking to his right to check if your trying to pass on that side (even though there is much less room), when he twists his neck and upper body to the right, he naturally tugs a little left on the bars causing the drift to the left. It was the 'right' set of events that happened within a few seconds.
Yea and all that comes from the fact that it was a true race so it’s fair game. I don’t bike, but even if I did and this happened to me, meaning I didn’t “cause” it, I’d be okay with it because it’s part of the game. But I have to say “cause” because like you said it was all just too perfect when it came to placement and timing from both parties lol. Always thought racing like this and nascar was boring when I was young till I realized how dangerous it is to pass someone and to get passed lol.
Looking back is a must. Watching vids as much as I do from being a football player and learning the value of quality video race tactics and footage. You must know what's behind you to act accordingly in front. Ultimately, with this crash...it was simply bad timing. Thx for sharing and heal up!!! Looking forward to the next vid. Loving them!!!
2:09 is absolute worth the whole video 😂
Pretty simple.. If you're going to swing your left elbow to indicate to the guy behind you to come through you're expecting/wanting him to pass you on that left side in no way do you then veer off your line especially to the side you've just swang your elbow.
Garry Wallah swang?
@@westsidewheelmen Yeah, dude swang his elbow for a left pass, then drifted left himsself. Bad form, that, what?....
@@westsidewheelmen Swung* my bad
He might come from a track background, where it's common to swing your elbow to indicate that you're coming off the front? What the guy in front did is exactly what you'd expect to see as a rider in second wheel in a paceline / mass start race etc. when the first wheel is going to pull up the track.
@@garrywallah4966 if you said swang that's fine. There's no grammar rules in cycling. Or correcting other adults grammar period.
I'm commenting because you asked us to. That is the first time I've ever seen the guy in front taken down that hard, that looked brutal. I know everyone is saying you looked, he looked then drifting and yada yada... but the third element that made a perfect storm is when he stopped pedaling (no blame, but never ever ever stop pedaling, soft pedaling maybe) while of course you were accelerating which almost instantaneously made you overlap wheels and took any reaction time you may have had. I used to live by the 50% rule (don't look it up, it's my concoction), which is when passing, I would not stop focusing on my guy until at least 50 % overlap of our bikes and bodies ensuring he knows I'm there. It's much easier to lean on him at the center point of his mass (ass cheek, hip, thigh, helmet to shoulder or whatever) and not upset his bike which will in-turn be holding me up if we rub. Hopefully my old tip is still relevant to someone out there. get better soon dude!!!
I think it was just bad luck, Guys on the limit and sometimes shite happens....especially bike racing!!! Love your uploads and commentary,Please keep us happy.
It was my understanding, and practice (in NorCal), which I was taught and have seen followed by many others as well, that the side you give the chicken wing on is the side you want the rider behind to follow through on. I would have been confused as well. Maybe you should do a poll up there, find out if this really is common practice, and assert the rule in another video.
Someone above is claiming track riders do the opposite. Sheesh. Good luck sorting that out.
Heal up fast Jeff! Thanks for your videos and insight.
Jeff I wish you a fast recovery and painless showers in the not too distant future.
Dude, I’m so glad you shared this. Not happy your crashed, but happy you talked through it. I just crashed in a Cat 4 race while vacationing in Colorado. Shit you not, first crash in a road race and I’ve been laid up with a broken neck! My luck sucks! And I was not looking back, so I feel like there’s even less excuse for mine.
Anyway, looking forward to more videos!
I hope you and other cyclist recover soon! Thing I have learnt is that when cycling it is better to avoid any unpredictable moves
Yeah that's true but hard to do at those speeds and after an attack like that. Hindsight is 20/20.
Amen about crit racing being risky! I got shoulder barged in a bunch sprint in a fixed gear crit and broke my collarbone, lots of road rash. Maybe I’ll send you the footage... heal up soon!
Get better soon guys. Yeah is part of what we sign for on bike racing!
Been there, done that. Not on my nip lol, but shoulder, wrist, palms, legs, etc. Get well soon. You've probably dealt with road rash before, but in my experience I've found that keeping it moist and keeping it covered is the way to go for a short healing time. I slather it in triple antibiotic ointment for the first few days along with keeping it covered under a non-stick gauge pad and held on with an athletic bandage roll. For the rest of the time I keep it slathered in petroleum jelly and covered with the same type of gauze and bandage until a new layer of skin is completely covering the wound. I am amazed at how fast road rash heals when it's kept covered. Not to mention keeping it covered and moist really makes it a lot more comfortable.
It seemed that he stopped pedaling for a second and got up over his saddle. Am I seeing things? Love the videos man. Good tips. Good luck in the coming weeks!
I hope you get well soon. I’m really glad you shared this.
2:08 the way you dragged him down 😂😂😂
Dash Luo yes, so hard 😅. I think he is lucky ... only a broken collerbone
you looked left and carried on straight and he looked right and moved left (accidents happen). Hope you both get better quickly.
Love how you guys get to do racing, here in the uk you have to basically hand over your spleen to do that. Only TTs allowed on public roads.
Hahaha "full yard sale". I had a good laugh there LOL
Impressive that you reacted so quickly to get a foot down to start breaking your fall, might be just what saved you from coming off any worse!
- "Starfish pose GO!"
Glad you're ok man.
Back on the Felt or is an old video? That bike looks so good to me.
Dennis faded left while looking over his right shoulder. Bad timing is all. Heal well, both of you!
Get well soon man! Good luck as well!
Hope you both heal up quickly and completely, dude
Just glad you're ok. Hope you heal quickly.
Mate, it's not good crashing. I was in a cyclosportif event. We were going against a strong wind. The roads were real rough and in Country. Big Tim who is 6 foot 7 and rather strong was second wheel and I was behind him. All of a sudden Tim put his brakes on so I crossed to his right he then moved right. I shouted oy oy. He took my wheel out and my lower arm hit the bitumen. That really hurt. So my lower arm was cut right open . A few other cyclists stopped and attended me. One nurse said put your elbow on my leg which I did without hesitation. The group car went and took me to hospital where I got 8 stitches.
It was the second needle the doctor stuck in my cut that I stopped feeling pain. The pain was level 8. On the trip home halfway back the anesthetic wore off. It's important to wear gloves as that normally is the first to make contact with the tarmac.
I bet other riders have their stories also.
Sucks man , shit happens . Thankfully no one got crazy hurt ! Heal up , good luck !!!
I might just race too much track, but for me swinging my elbow is signaling you're about to pull up track (in that direction) which is followed by ( demonstrated) shoulder checking to make sure it's still clear, then peeling off.
Damn that hurts!!!
Always great cycling videos here!!!! :-)
Excellent racing info here!!!
I love watching your videos! I hope to someday race catagory 1 races. I'm 14 and I race cat 5
@Sasee He got on a bike and pedaled his ass off.
When I was racing there were a handful of young kids who used to come out to the training races and mix it up with us. At least two of them are now riding for pro teams.
Man get well soon to you and the fellow crasher good luck on the next few races.
Was in a late race move and this guy had been sitting in the whole time, he put himself into the rotation and did the exact same thing to me, moved one way, flicked, then started to move the other way as I was pulling through. I put my hand on his hip and was able push him out of the way. Officials saw it and I got DQ'd, I told them what he had done but they didn't care. My opinion is that you need to ride in a predictable manner to be safe, and this SJBC was definitely not being predictable.
What a bummer! Get well soon!!!
There's always going to be spills in any sports. It's learning from your mistakes that makes us better!
It happens my brother thank God you are OK hope your friend gets better soon.
I think it is important to make it clear when you end up your pull. This is what teams do when they are doing a TTT. In that situation it was really ambiguous. Also, the more experience you have can make you less aware especially in a practice crit. However you still face de same risks
dang man, that's bad luck. Looks like he looked back to his right and drifted left a bit. A combination of minor things that led to a major thing. Hope you get well soon!
Look behind first , then make your move , mistake but big👍for fessing up. Good luck in your next race.
I’m gonna start watching at least one of these videos before I ride to remind myself to ride safe
We all should do that really.
Thanks for the explanation andsharing!
Great helpful video some of us can learn from. I don't race in couple years , but this helpful in any kind pack riding.
Good luck at boise criterium it's always a good event for spectators. Have fun.
See you at intelli!
Cheers,
The guy doing weird stuff at the start line in the Let's Roast jersey 🤪
Haha! You were pretty amped up :-)
Come say hi, i'll be the guy with road rash scars and a pink kit
What about a small mirror where your bar tape cap is? It’s not that cool thing to do but could help with seeing behind and not turning your head.
He doesn’t just move over, he flicks you through and you don’t come through on the left (the side that’s open) so he looks to see what side you are on and moves slightly left (so he can let you pass if you’re on the right side of the wheel). Idk if you saw him look back but it’s not the time for you to look back when the guy in front of you wants to get off the front haha. It’s a hard lesson but you have to pay attention to what happening in front of you. You only look back when you have a bit of space on the wheel in front of you, you’ve pulled off the front, or you’re on the back of the break. Good luck in Boise dude.
Just a general question, if im looking at such an incident, what are the likely points of damage on a bike and what are the poins that are the most likely to be in need of replacement?
My bike got knocked over recently, and the only noticeable damage was some scraps on the shifters and the quick release from the back. My handlebar (aloy) and tape received no dmg. But yeah, it was standing still. This incident to me looks like a high risk of two totaled carbon frames, maybe some totaled backwheels, totaled seat, totaled handlebar, one pedal scratched down. If you´re lucky the groupset has no functional dmg.
In my opinion if you having kind of respect for others and have a good racing mind, you will know that this is quite simply just an unfortunate racing incident, no one to blame just be glad there was no very serious injury and that you both get to ride your bike again.
You forgot to stop on the STOP sigh...
that's one reason I have been concidering going to full length gloves. Hopefully the other dudes collar bone isn't to bad. I have been on the mend for 4 months after breaking mine in 4 places and having it surgically repaired. Only 4 weeks off the bike tho.
He is looking left to see if he has room to move over to let you pull up the right side.
The concrete gutter isn't 2 bikes wide. He was hogging that thin gutter strip, which left NO room on the right, then he flicked his elbow,
so why then pull *LEFT* too soon....????....
Textbook fall. You should have highlighted that too. If you're gonna fall, do it well, and you did. Got your palm down to cushion the initial impact. Result: No broken bones.
ah but that depends how you hit the ground. jeff got most of his momentum taken away while riding into the guy, but a fast crit corner when someone slides out you really gotta be careful about reaching out. thats just asking for a collarbone to snap
Bummer on the crash. Good lessons learned, I'll take that one to heart
Ooo, yeah! Good stuff on the way. Heal up well, Jeff. There are probably at least one or two critical moments in every ride where doing exactly the wrong thing at exactly the wrong time could result in catastrophe. I think we're generally more lucky than not.
Was the elbow flick from dennis an indication of direction: “I’m going left” the checked to see if you were on his right?
Looks like he was looking over left shoulder as you looked over the right. I'm terrible at holding my line when I'm looking back and I wonder if he just drifted by mistake because of that.
Agree except I think Jeff was looking over his left shoulder and Dennis his right shoulder, causing him to drift left into Jeff.
That's my take also.
@@cooperk4 yeah, man I need more sleep...
Spidey sense can be improved. I hate crashes, stay safe on the battlefield.
Hey man, shit happens and it looks like a classic bit of miscommunication. Good luck in Boise!
You are the man for taking some of the blame.
That WOAH WOAH WOAH hit so hard. Goosebumps
Ouch. Nothing quite like a busted collarbone and tons of road rash...been there done that...ugh. Hope you guys heal up quick
It's part of cycling can happen to any of us guys get well soon is all i can contribute to your vid 😎👍
Excuse me, can you give me information of bike model/cost and exact weight please. To be above average cyclist does that mean you have to be strong runner too? Does heights matter, longer legs the better?
glad you are ok.
The road said thanks for the hug guys 😂
Two cat 5 mistakes. (No. 1) Lead rider flicks left elbow, moves left. (No. 2) Rider #2, eyes forward.
Its an honest mistake from both parties though u humble to admit u had some fault too. Get well bro
some fault?
@@random_vid_tt ya some. The guy gave the elbow to pass and then he cuts left?? A turn signal is different than a pass signal
@@rushhour6444 i know but i would go with "protect your front wheel" here, he put way too much trust in the rider infront - just my opinion
@@random_vid_tt true thats why i (and him) said he has some fault too. Lol i aint disagreeing wid u.
You do a great job in your race analysis (whatever the plural is)... this crash is just unfortunate confluence of two mistakes being made. However the left elbow flick puts more blame on the front rider. Trailing rider always has to be attentive and we all have tales of tire rub that didn't lead to a crash. Get well and stay safe.
Super rad crash! Looking forward to next videos. Have you tried tegaderm bandages for road rash? - I highly recommend.
back when i start riding some of the old school guy would tell us to keep our arms in when going down and try to slide on the back
Ooohhhh boy!!!! Sorry for that. Hope you guys are recovering well. Which city these criterium races ? Thanks. Best from Brasilia - Brasil.
It happens. Glad to hear everyone involved is on the mend! Great content as usual:)
Just a normal working accident. It happens. Looks like the #1 really would like to get overtaken so he could save some watts. He checked his 6 twice: first time to the right and second time to the left. It is a standard cautious behave when ride next to curbs and checking your 6 on the opposite side of the curb, to move away from it as you check your six, so you reduce the likelihood of hitting the curb while check your 6. If u’re next to the curb is about to check your 6 to the left, so you slightly move to the left while turning your neck to the same side. That’s what #1 did, perhaps you (#2) didn’t realize that in that exact second he was just checking his 6.
I must add that i’ve already witnessed someone breaking bones because didn’t move to the left while checking 6 to the left. Almost inevitably the guy hitted the curb.
What do I think? Hey.... shit happens. One of those tough breaks. Hope you get better soon.
this is why I only do TT's now....get better soon
You got gloves on! huge
You guys get well soon, you felt like pro💪🏽💪🏽😢
What's the Kask model helmet he's wearing here? Anyone know? Jeff?
Oh no :( i hope both you guys heal up fast
Sorry I hope you recover well .
As you are looking over your shoulder to the left he is looking over his to the right. He's throwing some mixed signals.
1:12 I swear you see blood and skin flying across the camera.
That'll teach you to be so fast. If you weren't such a powerful rider, you wouldn't have suffered as badly. Hope to see both of you up and racing again soon.
WTF. Dude that sucks. Yard sale big time. Terrible to see this. I look back when I can safely. Guy in front gave mixed signals for sure. I say it’s 50/50. Both at fault. But u still rock even if you do look back and crash into people in front.
What software are you using for dash overlay? Thanks!!! Garmin virb sucks
I made a video about this check my channel.
just want to put it here but the guy in front drifted left because he was checking right so put more weight onto his left side without realising
Man you're tough! How many times have you crashed? How many crashes has that Felt survived?
The guy in front landed flat on his shoulder/side 😲
....how do you walk away from that yeesh!
