I'd give anything to go back in time and re-experience my AC years... Best times of my life.... yeah that sounds sad but those who played back in 1999/2000 will understand... *nostalgia and tears* Best MMO ever created. That feeling of meeting a group of strangers who give you free items, buff you for the first time, and take you out hunting.. then afterwards relaxing inside an inn by a camp fire chatting away.... What a feeling. So much excitement, mystery, wonder.... What a great community the game had way back when... Each server having their own "hubs" and traditions and lingo. A lot of MMO's now advertise that "sandbox" style of gaming, no linearity, no right or wrong way to play, but they could never compare to AC. AC was that in every sense of the word. It was the epitome of sandbox. Someone invent a time-machine please. I could never regret all the hours of my childhood I spent playing this game. Nothing tops the nostalgia I get from thinking about those years... such a beautiful, warm, tingling sensation. Big shoutout to the original developers... you guys are the best.

heysatan8 Man i was there yessss VERY Nostalgic, this part touches my soft side lol... im speechless...i was on Harvestgain my sis was on the same server i can remember she joined "the forgotten" monarchy led by "TRU" he was the monarch and...Tru was about to join the U.S marines and i wonder if he is still around.........if any one ever met a lady who buffs you up to make your first atlant weapons... her name was "Kahni".....man very Nostalgic..

+heysatan8 Exactly my thoughts, and I even had the same experience. I was just a newb running down the road from the Lycanthorp(sp?) newb area and ran into some folks sitting by a campfire (Frostfell server). Turned out they were a monarchy led by a mage named "The Talisman" and they took me under their wing and made me a vassal to my first and greatest patron "Ross the Destroyer," great guy. They were so kind, I was just a kid(13 at the time) and knew nothing about the world of Dereth. Remembering these people helps to restore some small amount of faith in humanity.
I soon found out about Darktide and went over there for a little adventure, and it was absolutely amazing, tho extremely intimidating for my 13 year old self. I met another great guy who became my patron, helped me out, but like I said that server was not for the faint of heart so I didn't stick around too long.
No game will ever compare, and that's not just because of nostalgia. They literally just don't make games like this anymore, everything is designed around squeezing every drop of cash from the player as possible, and making everything extremely easy and convenient. There just isn't any immersion in modern MMOs anymore. The profit motive has completely taken over the artistic soul, and that is not merely limited to gaming, but nearly every facet of life these days.

This game changed my life. Instead of getting drunk and doing drugs until 3am then having to go to work, I became hooked on a game that I played literally 12 hours a day and still managed to keep a job. BEST GAME ALL TIME!!!!

  • @Spazticspaz

I cried manly tears. The only MMORPG that gave me a real sense of adventure. No exclamation marks over people's heads. No golden trail. No linearity. Camping the Hauberk in Glenden Woods. Making the run to Fort Tethana in the dire lands. Farming tuskers. Farming olthoi. Farming freakin' everything AND enjoying it! Getting 40% vitae from shadow invasions. Which lead to all-nighter corpse runs. Which led to learning your lesson and investing in death items. Learning life lessons of deception on DT. Getting buffed for the first time. Then subsequently berserking around on DT with a training wand at level 30 nukin' 50s. The connection link going red while in a fellowship, WHILE in the pits of "Her Dark Majesty's" lair. Getting my first Atlan. Enjoying the pleasantries of monarchy and drowning in XP gains from hundreds of vassals. Most of all it was the people that made Asheron's Call what it was. Without the community, it's just a bunch of empty programming and lonely drudges. A bunch Mattkars, but no Hide Coats or Hoary Robes. A Pleasant Ulgrim... An Asheron, with no one to hear the call... *takes a swig of mead* *hic* "I'll be the round-about" and see you guys the next time we hear Asheron's Call! *hic* Salute!
Much love to the fellowship of AC,
    and 15 years of... fun

I also played in 1999 and for many years after with my cousin. I was a kid when I started so this game will always have a special place in my heart. When I reminisce I get such a strong feeling of nostalgia. So many fantastic memories. Meeting cool people, going on quests, collecting gear, dying matching sets of amuli armor... (and the one with the veins). I played World of Warcraft but that game sucks compared to AC, agreed that nothing has or ever will fill that void. It's just a shame that I can't bring myself to go back to it... it just isn't the same.

Played from the beginning up to about 2010 on Icedancer's clan, Thistledown. My main was Captain Howdy. I loved that this game could have thousands of people playing at any time. Back then we were playing mostly Unreal Tournament and Quake 2 online, those types of things. Others at work were playing Everquest (I was working for Infogrames at the time) but AC seemed so much better, and it was! Over the years we lost a lot of people to other MMO's, but a LOT of them came back over time. Real life friendships were forged over forums, in game AND out of game marriages, you name it. My old room mate moved out to Seattle from Atlanta because I offered him a job... we met on AC, he met his wife from Mississippi on AC and they now have 2 kids together and are doing great living in the Seattle area. Amazing... the game relied HEAVILY on fellowship as it was near impossible to solo any significant quest. I never got into PVP and really didn't understand how it could function at all in such a fellowship reliant game.... but the PvE was fantastic. There was just nothing like the adrenaline of dozens of Olthoi swarming over you and the huge ring of dead corpses you would create in concentric circles around yourself. Some of the MOST EPIC moments came during corpse recovery.... people got themselves stuck in the most fucked up places!
I will surely miss it. I wish like hell there was a way to have a private server. I hope that becomes possible.

Harvestgain for life - Darken Lore, Naate'tyn Pfasson, and other characters I played that don't remember. I played from Dec 1999 to around 2008 when life took charge. I played extensively from 2000-2007 but could never get the same feeling back after that. Such a great game, my first MMORPG and will always be the best. Hunted Eastham beach for so so long with no buffs and the weapons and armor I could find. Then on to the Lugian Citadel, then Metos to farm the liches. Getting my first Atlan. The crazy jumping schematics for the fire stone. The events! I missed Bael'Zharon, but I was there for Gaerlan and Martine who were both great.

Though while in maintenance mode only, Ive been having a lot of fun in it again. So much has changed from what I remember back in 2000, 14 years ago. Always found it amazing that 1st generation MMO's like AC, DAoC and EQ has stood against the tests of time and has outlasted even their successors with many of the newer generation MMOs typically lasting 3 years before the servers are shut down. Played for several years as a kid on Solclaim (as Shadefire and Viper the Saint), along with my dad (Gesmo). My dad and I still talk about our adventures... getting lost in places that were extremely lethal, hunting iron golems and revenants in Metos, running along the beaches of Eastham and the Thieves Den. I still remember the exact coordinates of where our mule spot was along with the others in the group. I have never played an MMO I've liked as much... the closest thing I can think of was that Star Wars Galaxies game (can't even remember the name... LOL), but only for a small time.

(wave to all of my AC friends). This actually chokes me up. This game became a part of my life.

+Iran Cruz I was on Frostfell too, such a great and open world. The mechanics with mana pools for areas, discovering magic, and getting better at skills by using them was just awesome and not present in today's scene. My character just naturally development with my personality and style of play so immersion in the game was so deep. I miss AC,and I don't think we will see anything like it mechanically again.

I feel the same way. AC never made me play a role. My character template developed toward me. I could say with AC that if I ever ended up in a world such as it, this is how I would live and grow as a person. Never meet another MMORPG in the fantasy genre that captured that. It is really sad that the skill tree mechanic became dominant on the scene and I don't even know if it is a more viable alternative. The closest I could get to the experience was EVE. Whenever I played AC, I never felt like I was playing a game. I was playing an alternative universe me.

    • @scottyhcruz
      @scottyhcruz 7 лет назад

I think one of my most memorable moments in AC was when I was in Black Hills hunting and I saw Hellhawk. I couldn't believe my eyes that he was level 102 then. Just wrecking everything. It was the craziest thing I've seen lol.

    • @theworldsays4264

NPCs leveling is a mechanic that I am surprised other games have not mimicked and improved upon. It is so smart. Rather than just slapping a boss orc in an area, having an orc kill players, gain experience, and developing a name would be so awesome.

The feels, man. I've played on and off since ~2007, first as Inferneon of Morningthaw, then later as Megithor of Morningthaw. I wasn't there for a lot of that, but that was mostly me being too young to play it and understand it at all. This game came out a year after I was born. My dad played it since it came out, or shortly thereafter, after "winning" a free copy as part of a contest when he bought a new computer. He went in, checked it out, and... got stuck in it for fourteen years. I wanted to play it ever since I saw my dad kicking some major butt in the Obsidian Plains, back in... 2004? I think? He finally caved, like I said, in 2007. We only quit because our internet provider sucks and is too unstable to play it. Which raises some serious questions if this game still runs happily over a 56k line like it used to, but whatever.
My one regret is that I wasn't around (well, I was, but you try asking a one year old to get immersed in a game world complete with its own culture and storyline and tell me how it goes) for most of the story-changing events. I came around a little after people... sort of stopped caring. Literally the only live event I was around to see was the latest shadow attack on Tou-Tou or whatever, and I couldn't go because the event was tailored toward maxed characters with godly gear and Lum augs, and my guys have none of that. My highest character is 208. My dad's highest is 268, and he has about 8 years over me. For most of his life, Arklin (who was created in Oct. 2000 and is my dad's main) stagnated in his 130's. Because Dad was too busy actually having fun instead of powerleveling. Now it seems that all of the new content is geared toward people who have entire accounts full of minor gods. Perhaps it's for the best that AC is closed down, lest the problem get even worse. Don't get me wrong, I'm sad to see it go. It was a big part of my life for... well, now just over half my life. But I think it's time to move on.
That said I have yet to see anything implement character levels, skill levels, and experience in quite the same way as AC.I don't think anyone ever will.
I hope they let people make private servers. I imagine they'd all have to have different storylines, as the main storyline to AC is intellectual property of... I imagine WB now... and they don't like other people using their stuff. But the game engine could probably be released.
Had to do a double take in one of the shots, because one guy was decked out in dark blue platemail and that looked exactly like Megithor, white staff with purple end and all. Then I looked closer and realized this guy has a white beard. My guy has auburn hair, and beard.
God, I miss this game. What I wouldn't give to be able to go back to it. Or better yet, have been around to see its glory days. Who knows, maybe if I had started just a little while earlier, I'd have been more on a level playing field with everyone else.
Even with all of its little bugs, quirks, and overall oddities mostly caused by being a full-3D open-world MMORPG in 1999 (I mean, come on, they had to compromise somewhere, right?), this is still one of the greatest games, if not the greatest, that I have ever played and probably ever will play. Thank you to everyone who made my experience one of the best I have ever and probably will ever have had!

Crazy that almost two decades later, NO OTHER mmorpg has been able to provide this type of mechanics. Almost as comparing the mechanics of FIFA to the mechanics of a random 2D web browser soccer game, the only reason people play today's mmorg is because of graphics. Same goes for the lores, my gosh, vulnerabilities, skill and stats buffs and debuffs for creature magic, magic with countless of different elements, war magics with different war spells(rings, walls, bolts, arcs streaks), life magic for elemental buffs/debuffs and stats manipulation, alchemy for imbuing arrows with those same elements, weapons and armor stats buffs and portal recalls/summons with item magic. Countless of weapons for unarmed, swords, spears, staffs, daggers, bows and xbows and they were all its own skills. Alliances, HUGE map with countless of towns made from different ethnicity and the quests... instances was almost unknown, you could reach anyone in the game anywhere if you knew where. The number and type of creatures, loots and dungeons. The possibility of dropping your precious weapons/armors if you did not carry more expensive shit loot to cover them on death and to win against odds even if you were under-leveled according to your skills. (Before housing) Town wars. Never has another game achieved anything beyond better graphics. Gaming mechanics, lore and world still unrivaled.... So sad. Just like Age of Empires and its first expansion Rise of Rome if comparing to other strategy games.

I played in Morningthaw as a UA / item magic player. Back during beta. I remember Yuri armor was very sought after. Arwic was not destroyed. And portal storms were common. The world was undiscovered... a wonderful time. Then after 1 year of playing Morningthaw I joined Darktide... saying farewell to my carebear days. I played as a UA still. had my matty coat. And I joined the ranks of Khao and his valiant anti-pk monarchy vs the evil Blood monarchy. First MMO I ever played... and the best one.
PS: Who else remembers when magic was not on scrolls... and you had to randomly guess at tapers to find the right combination? Sitting for hours in a taper shop.... fizzling away :D and keeping your magic a secret so no one else could cast and lower its efficiency.

been playing this since 2000, no one will understand how fun this game is unless they've tried it. i remember making my own spells i remember hunting the beach on eastham and mayoi, and losing my armor and weapons. after the patches they made the game too easy, then on the higher levels they made it too hard to compete unless you could devote 8 hours a day to play. thennn the most resent major patch where they totally reworked and combined classes made the game unbearable. after that, i gave up and i was in for the long haul to see it through, but that made it unappealing was the last straw... greatest game ever until the changes

Many, Many, Many, (probably way too many) hours spent thru Dereth!
Two things I remember vividly about AC.
One - I learned the one of the most important global economic principals by playing this game. When they eliminated the burden of money.. Instantly, you could carry as much money as you wanted.. Overnight, the entire world economy crashed… things never were the same….
Two - One of the last (if not the last) game, that actually punished you HARD for dying.. How many hours did you spend running back to that dungeon to try to retrieve your most cherished sword & armor.. Did not make it back… Too Bad! Someone just found a new toy!
    Good Times… good times
