It's insane how good these two were at their roles, if I wasn't as familiar as I am with the Columbine shooting I'd have easily believed this was real footage. Bit of a shame none of them pursued acting further.
As far as I know they're not "actors" in that sense, the director found people who "felt" real. A good chunk of the movie is actually improvised, they just had a loose script. It's similar to the kids who were in another found footage movie called The Blair Witch Project. Although technically in that case they WERE trained actors they just didn't do anything else beyond that.
@@voteZDLR Ohhh, that'd make a ton of sense, kind of what I've heard referred to as "natural actors". My favorite colombian filmmaker Víctor Gaviria actually uses these a ton, he even made a documentary called "How to get birds to act" about one of his movies where the whole cast were a bunch of kids/criminals from the streets basically playing themselves. Come to think about it, I really love this technique.
@voteZDLR basically the same thing Harmony Korine did with the movie Kids. Of course, Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny did go on to act in more films, but I believe the rest of the cast didn't pursue it any further.

The idea that Eric was the mastermind/leader is a common misconception. They were both equally engaged in the plan. It could even be argued Dylan was even more invested than Eric, to be honest. My ex husbands cousin was a sophomore at Columbine when it happened. She was never in direct danger, but I believe she knew at least a couple of the victims. That poor girl suffered for years with a meth habit she picked up in the aftermath and she nearly died. She got pregnant and was able to get clean for her baby. As far as I know she’s still doing well today, but she told me at one point that she’ll always have deep scars and lasting trauma from that day.
Btw, some of the details in Elephant were thought to be true at the time, such as the shooters having been romantically involved and that Eric shot Dylan and then himself. That said, I agree that Zero Day is a much better movie, but beware - it's not just based on Columbine. It's a beat by beat recreation of it. It takes very few creative liberties, sometimes down to dialogue.
there's also the film We need to Talk about Kevin which goes more into the shooters childhood and how he was different from most kids. That one is a disturbing watch as well.

such an unforgettable masterpiece - a film that could have easily come off as exploitive, opportunistic and “too soon” feels authentic and grounded in it’s depiction of high school alienation. one of the scariest movies i’ve seen to this day.. and mainly due to the performances of Andre and Calvin, who are so scarily convincing for two kids with essentially no acting experience whatsoever. it really drives home the fact that no one really knows what bubbling beneath the surface of angsty, misunderstood teens - it makes you connect with them, hoping that their plan is a sick fantasy and they won’t go through with it.. which makes the last ten minutes so much more horrifyingly grim. the repressed anger and undertones of a homoerotic relationship between Andre and Calvin is subtle and provocative - definitely the most fascinating and disturbing film made about school shootings in america to this day imo, great vid

The "horrors of reality" in that sense make terrible horror films. Especially considering people who like stuff like horror films have usually been there done that in terms of experience. @@Tinylittledansonman excellent point! The unknown plays a large part in fear too, you're right, but most of the unknowns are based on unrealistic *mythologies or fables.* These stories are used to induce fear as a form of control. Like the Abrahamic religions, as prime examples, who tell their followers "If they commit sins, they will spend eternity in hell!" Now, what greater form of controlling the masses has worked more effectively and efficiently than those religious laws? They are thousands of years old and people in the 21st century still follow them...fear is the most effective tool for control! Look what Hitler was able to do just by using fear to it's full potential, he turned his entire country into jewish hating/fearing folk, seemingly overnight.

The first few minutes had me thinking of Columbine. It's crazy how that one event changed a bunch of stuff. It was probably the first big school incident. Those of us who were in school from the 90s to the early 2000s most certainly felt the ripples from that event. So much has come out about it too. Hopefully the future generations don't see it memory holed and forgotten.
I remember watching this in late 2016 and thought it was tough to watch, great job to everyone for the attention to detail on this project that I didn’t know about
I remember watching this waaayyy back when I was doing a deep dive into Columbine. Think I had the DVD but that'll be long gone by now. Guess a refresher is due.
I've never heard of this movie, but WOW!! I'd be so scared to go back to that school, especially that 1st year. Good work bud!! A capri sun sounds real good right about now!!
I was graduating when I saw it this same year. Hit real close and I couldn't tell any friends to watch it out of fear I'd be looked at like I was condoning or idolizing that kind of thing. which I wasn't it shook me like the wind of change
I remember watching this about 10 years ago when i was just a young teen and it disturbed me, but overtime it faded from my memory and i entirely forgot about it. Watching this synopsis instantly reminded me of how it ended and just how eerie this movie is.
I actually did see it by some miracle (Some guy reuploaded the movie I think) It was one of the most surreal movies I’ve ever watched, it felt like I was legitimately watching 2 outcasts with a camera doing stupid shit But then it finally got to the school scene… And it was just… weird, I didn’t know how to react to it The film is plain weird, because I felt like I was actually watching 2 losers carry their ‘master plan’
Remember watching this a long time ago around when it first came out. At first I thought it was real footage but after I found out it was a project, wish it could’ve had a wider release
There's actually an 8 part Columbine Iceberg that talked about what you were talking about when you mentioned how people believe Dylan was influenced by Eric to commit the shooting.
I remember seeing this movie about 12 yrs ago when I was 15 late at night. I remember not being able to sleep n I ran into it unintentionally and watched it while playing nba 2k on xbox😬 (my dumb young ass at the time dead ass thought it was real and these dudes was documenting this shit cuz it felt real even the scenes in the end and I found out it was a movie a few yrs later when I tried looking it up again)crazy how I remember it n what I was doing but it was one of those movies u won’t forget cuz it was creepy asf to me seeing the 2 boys spiral downward till the events at the end
there is another movie I think few people have seen based on a true crime, it contains one of the worst and most haunting scenes I have ever seen and I have seen alot. It is called playground or Plac zabaw untranslated. I would like if you made a video on it.
my main issue with elephant was that it felt to "sterile". void of emotion. which is like fine for the first half of the movie, which just protrays like "a normal day at school" which can be quite sterile and emotionless. but the second half it is still void of many emotionions IMHO. like the killers expressing very little emotions while carrying out what they did. which is the opposite of what witnesses report of the real life equivalents. they made it look more like they are robots instead of people who let their dark thoughts and emotions overcome them
The original movie Elephant was named after was also very sterile and emotionless, showing a series of random killings in Ireland during "the troubles," with pretty much no detail or dialogue. The title is a play on the phrase "the elephant in the room". It removes the motives and reasons behind the killings, instead just making you watch the reality and senselessness of such violence. The 2003 version of Elephant is attempting to do the same thing, showing a more objective version of a shooting, avoiding dramatising it as much as possible while attempting to shed light on a real social problem.
Dude, I love your content, from general horror to your Morbid Musicians (series was DOPE AF), I've subbed for years and only wish there was more to watch. I've been hoping for an updated Top 10 Horror Short Films video for a long time. Hope you keep it up, man. 👏🙌
Man my friend showed me this movie back in the day, the actual shooting scene felt like I was watching a snuff movie. As harrowing as this film is I still listen to Benji Cossa's Volcano today, such a fantastic track which juxtaposes so well with the dark gravity of this film.
I dont remember how exactly I heard about this movie, but I remember being on a call with a friend at one point while I was watching it and her asking "why does it sound like a school shooting is happening in the background?" Possibly the most accurate movie about Columbine that doesnt even label itself as a movie about Columbine.
I just watched "Elephant" after seeing this video a few times. "Zero Day" completely smoked it. It says a lot when a movie made on a shoestring budget does a far more effective job of conveying what they wanted to get across than something with an immensely larger budget. "Zero Day" interesting. "Elephant" is extremely boring. Even the final sequence pales in comparison.
He didn’t go over it but theres an incredibly disturbing scene where they are shown making pipebombs and mention “we’re not testing them beforehand so if you wanna know how they work, ask a survivor.”
It's interesting that he is so upset about the principal maybe finding out, basically he's saying that kids reporting, and adults listening, really does prevent these issues
Not sure if you didn’t show it bc RUclips cracks down on certain things but I watched this movie back in 2018 I think,it was posted on RUclips fully. They actually have a scene with Andre and Cal making things for the attack in detail. When I go back to look for the movie it’s usually cut out in some uploads. Understandable though
i watched this movie when it was on netflix back in like... god, 2013? earlier? it was almost life changing in the sense that it just stays with you. it almost has the same effect as the blair witch project.
Same here, watched it in 2013 as well, on netflix...then I took a break from Netflix for a while to get my life together.... but every time I hear about it, my stomach turns. It looks sooooo incredibly real.
Actually I did see this I’ve seen it a few times since I first discovered it but I think I found it on Netflix the first time I saw it, long ago. It’s actually a very good movie and the actors did a great job making the “found footage” convincing. It definitely brings awareness to this type of situation and how something like this would happen. Hopefully for those who have seen it it gave them a little insight on what to be aware of. Great movie with some really good acting. The final security camera scenes make you sick to your stomach as it should. Very well done low budget representation of the horrors to look out for.
I watched this movie in college in 2013 and I swear.....it is by far one of the most sickening movies I've watched. I literally got depressed and skipped a few days of school.....I understood that saying "misery loves company", because I told sooooo many people to watch it because I didn't want to be sad alone. And I commend the actors! Taking on such a role so well, that I forget they're not the ACTUAL shooters. I almost don't like them irl 😂
One of the innocent high-schoolers calls 911 and then drops their phone, the dispatcher listens and tries to talk to them but they ignore them. Pretty clever way to give the scene audio.
Another movie for people who want something thats not over dramatized and feels more natural like this is the movie "and then i go" I know ive commented before but i came back around to watch this again lol
Saw the real people that did this in their video they said that they purposely stated that there was nobody else involved in this like in pacifically. Is that what their statement was saying? It's pretty weird the specifically trying to point out that no one tried to coerce into doing so.

I saw this in theatres when it came out.
This used to be one of my fave movies it's so disturbing and realistic definitely recommend
ALSO if you haven't I recommend watching the commentary Ben did with andre and cal it's pretty interesting
Yeah I watched it beforehand it was great, would love if they sat down and did it again 20 years later I think they’d have a lot of interesting things to say about it
@@deburke321thatd be so cool, Andre actually has a RUclips channel too he did a q&a ab zero day a little if you haven't seen those :) I think he's called funnily "ohthatandre"
I saw this movie in like 6th grade and I was just thinking about it the other day. Such a crazy film, but a sad but true story that we cannot ignore.
Guess a refresher is due.
probably would have been a collector's item by now
I've never heard of this movie, but WOW!! I'd be so scared to go back to that school, especially that 1st year. Good work bud!! A capri sun sounds real good right about now!!
I saw this movie in 2013 and I forgot about it, I thought it was called project zero
there is a movie called zero hour that is about columbine maybe ur mixing them up
@@---xo3emwhy is Timothy McVeigh in zero hour?

Watched this movie back in 2007 and it has stuck with me ever since. Truly chilling.
I was graduating when I saw it this same year. Hit real close and I couldn't tell any friends to watch it out of fear I'd be looked at like I was condoning or idolizing that kind of thing. which I wasn't it shook me like the wind of change
This movie feels so real, definitely a great found footage film.
I love this movie so much, it only gets better the more you watch it.
I had completely forgotten about this movie. Might need to dust up old copy of dvd and watch it again if I can find it.
I remember watching this about 10 years ago when i was just a young teen and it disturbed me, but overtime it faded from my memory and i entirely forgot about it. Watching this synopsis instantly reminded me of how it ended and just how eerie this movie is.
The acting is disturbing as well. The scenes when they attack the school are terrifying because of how realistic it is.
if you were born the 90s you have heard of this then
Zero day feels raw, and unfiltered. Elephant feels like it's too clean in my opinion.
its too movie like which makes it harder to immerse yourself in
I actually did see it by some miracle (Some guy reuploaded the movie I think)
It was one of the most surreal movies I’ve ever watched, it felt like I was legitimately watching 2 outcasts with a camera doing stupid shit
But then it finally got to the school scene… And it was just… weird, I didn’t know how to react to it
The film is plain weird, because I felt like I was actually watching 2 losers carry their ‘master plan’
It's on RUclips right now
Remember watching this a long time ago around when it first came out. At first I thought it was real footage but after I found out it was a project, wish it could’ve had a wider release
A testament to mental illness in America, the fact that this movie could be made so realistically..
This was such a great project, raw and gritty and that dark underlying narrative ever present. Very well documented too, well done.🙌
Andre pick up the phone Andre Andre are you there pick up the phone Andre Andre pick up the phone Andre Andre are you there pick up the phone Andre
You won't believe how many times I had to listen to that while editing this
@@deburke321so annoying but realistic and unrealistic at the same time
There's actually an 8 part Columbine Iceberg that talked about what you were talking about when you mentioned how people believe Dylan was influenced by Eric to commit the shooting.
ive seen the film a while ago, it was actually really interesting as it feels and looks so real
this is an extremely good film, it packs a heavy punch
I was young too and only and only saw the CCTV shooting part and thought I just watched a real school shooting
I’m glad to see someone talking about this movie. I would like to see you do a vid comparing this and Gus Van Sant’s Elephant
Ive seen this movie a few times. Its the most realistic movie I've ever seen.
there is another movie I think few people have seen based on a true crime, it contains one of the worst and most haunting scenes I have ever seen and I have seen alot. It is called playground or Plac zabaw untranslated. I would like if you made a video on it.
This movie was one of the creepiest movies Ive seen in recent years
my main issue with elephant was that it felt to "sterile". void of emotion. which is like fine for the first half of the movie, which just protrays like "a normal day at school" which can be quite sterile and emotionless. but the second half it is still void of many emotionions IMHO.
like the killers expressing very little emotions while carrying out what they did. which is the opposite of what witnesses report of the real life equivalents. they made it look more like they are robots instead of people who let their dark thoughts and emotions overcome them
The original movie Elephant was named after was also very sterile and emotionless, showing a series of random killings in Ireland during "the troubles," with pretty much no detail or dialogue.
I remember watching this a lot when it first came out. It was done so well, and after every viewing it gave me such a weird sad, cold mood.
I wouldn't say it's scary but just unsettling
Smart girl! She sees right through him and she's honest & open about it.
Dude, I love your content, from general horror to your Morbid Musicians (series was DOPE AF), I've subbed for years and only wish there was more to watch. I've been hoping for an updated Top 10 Horror Short Films video for a long time. Hope you keep it up, man. 👏🙌
I found this movie on RUclips in 2014. I’m so happy its now getting the attention it deserves
You should totally watch "Duck!" It's apparently the first school shooting movie.
Duck is incredible
@@xuimello3877 hell yes🪦
Yep, it released only a couple months after columbine happend
I saw this movie years ago and it still lingers in my mind.
Man my friend showed me this movie back in the day, the actual shooting scene felt like I was watching a snuff movie. As harrowing as this film is I still listen to Benji Cossa's Volcano today, such a fantastic track which juxtaposes so well with the dark gravity of this film.
I was just thinking about how someone have to do an analysis or a video related to this, one of my favorite indie movie
well I have seen the movie before.... but it is definitely creepy
I dont remember how exactly I heard about this movie, but I remember being on a call with a friend at one point while I was watching it and her asking "why does it sound like a school shooting is happening in the background?" Possibly the most accurate movie about Columbine that doesnt even label itself as a movie about Columbine.
3:42 SPEAKS AND SOUNDS ALMOST LIKE ELLIOT RODGER
YO THIS IS SO ACCURATE 😭😭
I just watched "Elephant" after seeing this video a few times. "Zero Day" completely smoked it. It says a lot when a movie made on a shoestring budget does a far more effective job of conveying what they wanted to get across than something with an immensely larger budget. "Zero Day" interesting. "Elephant" is extremely boring. Even the final sequence pales in comparison.
He didn’t go over it but theres an incredibly disturbing scene where they are shown making pipebombs and mention “we’re not testing them beforehand so if you wanna know how they work, ask a survivor.”
Lucky they did not test them though.
Would they have worked, it would have been even worse.
I have seen it but was in 6th class and looking back it feels like a fever dream
It's interesting that he is so upset about the principal maybe finding out, basically he's saying that kids reporting, and adults listening, really does prevent these issues
Thanks for another upload bro youtube doesn't even notify me
Yeah I’ve heard that a good bit recently, I think you have to switch notifications to all, if that doesn’t work I’m not too sure
believe it or not the actual columbine shooters didn’t want any one to copy them and referred to anyone thinking to copy them as dumbasses
to be a little more specific in their last bits of writing is where they said they didn’t want copycats
but they also said they want to start a chain reaction and had tutorials on making bombs and hiding guns/ equipment in the basement tapes?@@meikel1492
i remember watching this and being spooked back in 05/06 in elementary school.
Oh the pipe bomb scene?
@@noteverthere yes! They show some parts of it but not all in reuploads I’ve seen
i watched this movie when it was on netflix back in like... god, 2013? earlier? it was almost life changing in the sense that it just stays with you. it almost has the same effect as the blair witch project.
Same here, watched it in 2013 as well, on netflix...then I took a break from Netflix for a while to get my life together.... but every time I hear about it, my stomach turns. It looks sooooo incredibly real.
I remember seeing this movie and the end scenes were so realistic it was insane
i’ve seen this flim, and it’s amazing. One of my favorites but Duck the carbine high massacre is #1
I remember seeing this during the pandemic. I found it on the masskillers subreddit (I like true crime stuff im not a psycho i promise)
They need to give this film a Blu-ray release. Would love to own a physical copy.
nice conclusion from you. and yes, easily the best depict of the genre
Elephant by Gus Van Sant is also excellent.
You can watch the full movie unedited on RUclips.
You earned a sub👍🏻
Thank you Whitney 🙏
Have you seen Duck! The Carbine High Massacre (1999)? That's a weird, semi-comedic take on the Columbine Massacre. Might be worth a watch.
Damn, it released only 6 months after Columbine, and got both of the directors arrested for having weapons on school grounds.
Im ashamed to admit that the bit with the double barrel got a hearty chuckle outta me
Actually I did see this I’ve seen it a few times since I first discovered it but I think I found it on Netflix the first time I saw it, long ago.
I love your stuff man
I actually watched this movie on youtube like 8 years ago.. kinda wild cause i was just talking about this the other day..
i watched this when i was like 11 on youtube, surprised how few heard about it
I saw this in theatres when it came out
Littleton, Colorado is not really a small town. It's about a half hour drive from downtown Denver.
i love this movie a lot, its too realistic
I saw this film years ago. Horrifying indeed.
definitely in my top ten movies of all time
I watched this movie in college in 2013 and I swear.....it is by far one of the most sickening movies I've watched.
I watched this when I was a freshman in 2014 free on RUclips its memorable and I like the movie
Were they actually on the phone with dispatch when they were counting down before shooting themselves? I’ve never heard this
One of the innocent high-schoolers calls 911 and then drops their phone, the dispatcher listens and tries to talk to them but they ignore them. Pretty clever way to give the scene audio.
Never saw this one. Duck is silly, but somewhat interesting. I'll have to see if I can track this one down.
They used the actors real names in The Blair Witch Project, too. Great video as always,my friend!
Thank you very much!
Another movie for people who want something thats not over dramatized and feels more natural like this is the movie "and then i go"
I know ive commented before but i came back around to watch this again lol
Unfortunate that this is the world we live in
I remember watching this movie a couple years ago, I thought it was actual footage.
Saw the real people that did this in their video they said that they purposely stated that there was nobody else involved in this like in pacifically. Is that what their statement was saying? It's pretty weird the specifically trying to point out that no one tried to coerce into doing so.
There's also a movie called Zero Hour but it's more of a documentary if I remember correctly.
