these two kids at my school who were obsessed w school shootings managed to convince the school to let them do a presentation on columbine. they just had us watch zero day and then decided to tell us all types of fun and quirky facts about eric and dylan where they just glorified and idolized them. anyway, one of those girls was my friend and she was actually pretty cool and did grow out of this “phase”. the other girl would bully me constantly and looking back on it, turns out she was more cringe than i was
such an unforgettable masterpiece - a film that could have easily come off as exploitive, opportunistic and “too soon” feels authentic and grounded in it’s depiction of high school alienation. one of the scariest movies i’ve seen to this day.. and mainly due to the performances of Andre and Calvin, who are so scarily convincing for two kids with essentially no acting experience whatsoever. it really drives home the fact that no one really knows what bubbling beneath the surface of angsty, misunderstood teens - it makes you connect with them, hoping that their plan is a sick fantasy and they won’t go through with it.. which makes the last ten minutes so much more horrifyingly grim. the repressed anger and undertones of a homoerotic relationship between Andre and Calvin is subtle and provocative - definitely the most fascinating and disturbing film made about school shootings in america to this day imo, great vid
Another great found footage movie similar to the theme of Zero Day, and a more recent example (2013-14 I believe) is a movie called “The Dirties”. Highly recommend it.
Came here to say this; it's amazing how well that movie was able to feel so uneventful even when you knew the outcome and then still gut punch you when it got down to brass tacks. That ending is absolutely fucking haunting
Holy shit I saw Zero Day back in the day when I was like 12 on RUclips, when RUclips was basically a wasteland of videos of all kinds. I’m so happy I’m not the only one that remembers this. Wooahhh dude
I saw it way back around graduation. I didn't tell anyone to watch it cause I didn't wanna seem like I idolized stuff like that. Same with that rampage movie it's like they wanted to spoon feed us that at that time because it had slowed down and they needed to push an agenda. That's why they did that sandy hook thing. Cause no one was shooting up schools anymore. That guy's dad was supposed to testify in supreme Court against a massive business he followed a paper trail and found billions of stolen money and had proof - that day. So they killed his wife shot up the school and made his kid a monster by blaming it on the whole family. Making anything he might have said in court incredible and he was no longer on the witness list.
This film really is impressive. It's terrifying, deep, unsettling, it really is well crafted as a film. This film is one of a kind and likely couldn't have been made today. Not just because of it's themes, but because of how common it is to do indie films nowadays.
If you watch the movie, he shows C02 canisters and says "C02 canisters for BB guns" then he shows .22 ammo and talks about it for a couple seconds. This video just has bad editing during that part.
'bulletes de aguilla.... christina aguilla' i think about this quote from this movie way too fkn often. he shows the bullets to the camera in the actual film, it was just edited odd in this video ahaha
I watched this with my mom when I was like ten, it still had the pipe bomb making scene in it and everything. It’s a great look into the mindset of the columbine attackers
100 percent in terms of movies made about Columbine I think it’s quite clearly the best Side note this seems like a strange movie to watch with a parent at 10 years old 😅
@@deburke321lmfao I know; both myself and my mom had a real interest in true crime, I knew tons about columbine so when we saw zero day on the shelf at the movie rental spot we grabbed it 😅
What!? This actually made it to the theaters?? Crazy...I assumed it was just a high school film class project. Now I gotta check it out. I think it's safe to say that most people don't like to watch the horrors of reality, they wanna see supernatural creatures/beings or killers in masks using knives, machetes and everything else around them, excluding firearms. Thanks for the heads up yo! ✌😄
I am sorta the opposite to be honest, I can handle gun violence in movies but I do not like when knives are used. Swords are okay for some reason, but knives? Not so much.
The "horrors of reality" in that sense make terrible horror films. Especially considering people who like stuff like horror films have usually been there done that in terms of experience. So to them thats just real life, a part thats dark and most people have never seen, but not very scary, not much scarier than say driving day to day knowing youre far more likely to be mangled up or killed than you are in a school shooting. If driving's not scary why would the even less likely day to day shit lotto be scary? Now having your mind taken over by demon before being dragged to hell, thats scary. Because we dont realistically know if its possible or what it would be like. The root of horror is the unknown, so whats lacking here is the unknown.
@@Tinylittledansonman excellent point! The unknown plays a large part in fear too, you're right, but most of the unknowns are based on unrealistic *mythologies or fables.* These stories are used to induce fear as a form of control. Like the Abrahamic religions, as prime examples, who tell their followers "If they commit sins, they will spend eternity in hell!" Now, what greater form of controlling the masses has worked more effectively and efficiently than those religious laws? They are thousands of years old and people in the 21st century still follow them...fear is the most effective tool for control! Look what Hitler was able to do just by using fear to it's full potential, he turned his entire country into jewish hating/fearing folk, seemingly overnight.
The first few minutes had me thinking of Columbine. It's crazy how that one event changed a bunch of stuff. It was probably the first big school incident. Those of us who were in school from the 90s to the early 2000s most certainly felt the ripples from that event. So much has come out about it too. Hopefully the future generations don't see it memory holed and forgotten.
I was a sophomore when Columbine happened. My junior and senior years were some of the most tense and weird, in terms of environment and energy. 9/11 happened at the beginning of my senior year... that didn't help anything lol

I watched this repeatedly when it first came out. I'm the same age as Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, and have extensively (some may say obsessively) researched the tragedy at Columbine, the events leading up to it, the investigations, the numerous stories of the survivors..... and what little we could learn about the victims. It's a fascinating glimpse into the lives of teens in middle class America at the time- how, in 1999 we were grossly behind the curve when it came to mental heath assistance for teens. We're still miles behind where we need to be. Thanks for covering this.
You can thank Reagan for destroying the mental healthcare system in this country. They wanted bad stuff to happen in the population. Problem > Reaction > Solution is this country's bedrock. It's revolting.
I dont remember how exactly I heard about this movie, but I remember being on a call with a friend at one point while I was watching it and her asking "why does it sound like a school shooting is happening in the background?" Possibly the most accurate movie about Columbine that doesnt even label itself as a movie about Columbine.

1st time I saw this I thought it was real found footage of a school shooting that I just hadn't heard about. Says something that mass shootings have become so common that one may have slipped by me.
there is another movie I think few people have seen based on a true crime, it contains one of the worst and most haunting scenes I have ever seen and I have seen alot. It is called playground or Plac zabaw untranslated. I would like if you made a video on it.
I actually did see it by some miracle (Some guy reuploaded the movie I think) It was one of the most surreal movies I’ve ever watched, it felt like I was legitimately watching 2 outcasts with a camera doing stupid shit But then it finally got to the school scene… And it was just… weird, I didn’t know how to react to it The film is plain weird, because I felt like I was actually watching 2 losers carry their ‘master plan’
my main issue with elephant was that it felt to "sterile". void of emotion. which is like fine for the first half of the movie, which just protrays like "a normal day at school" which can be quite sterile and emotionless. but the second half it is still void of many emotionions IMHO. like the killers expressing very little emotions while carrying out what they did. which is the opposite of what witnesses report of the real life equivalents. they made it look more like they are robots instead of people who let their dark thoughts and emotions overcome them
The original movie Elephant was named after was also very sterile and emotionless, showing a series of random killings in Ireland during "the troubles," with pretty much no detail or dialogue. The title is a play on the phrase "the elephant in the room". It removes the motives and reasons behind the killings, instead just making you watch the reality and senselessness of such violence. The 2003 version of Elephant is attempting to do the same thing, showing a more objective version of a shooting, avoiding dramatising it as much as possible while attempting to shed light on a real social problem.
Dude, I love your content, from general horror to your Morbid Musicians (series was DOPE AF), I've subbed for years and only wish there was more to watch. I've been hoping for an updated Top 10 Horror Short Films video for a long time. Hope you keep it up, man. 👏🙌
I just watched "Elephant" after seeing this video a few times. "Zero Day" completely smoked it. It says a lot when a movie made on a shoestring budget does a far more effective job of conveying what they wanted to get across than something with an immensely larger budget. "Zero Day" interesting. "Elephant" is extremely boring. Even the final sequence pales in comparison.
I HAVE SOOO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT HOW WRONG YOU ARE OKAY LET'S BEGIN. Elephant is a drawn out masterpiece of a movie because it is MADE to be boring. It is MADE for you to be so underwhelmed you forget what you're watching, or you don't care. Because the signs are there, and you're apathetic to them, THE WAY PEOPLE ARE APATHETIC TO THE SIGNS OF THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOR!!! It's a genius artistic film, with an entirely different take on the tragedy and how to portray it. Their message was EXACTLY what they showed in Elephant. Regular kids going about a regular day until it's NOT a regular day. The message was that you don't notice until it's in your face. Zero Day and Elephant had two different messages, and assuming they had the same one is EXACTLY why you think Elephant didn't do a good job showing it's message. It's understated on purpose, it's shot differently on purpose, and to assume that Elephant and Zero Day had the same message just because they were inspired by and about the same event is VERY much why you think Elephant didn't do a good job. Elephant is artistically done in a manner that tricks you. Zero Day is upfront with it. They're both EXTREMELY good films and I could go on for days about how the minimal, short lived portrayal of Alex and Eric and their relationship and their actions MAKE the movie, in a similar way as to how Cal and Andre's movie-long deep dive portrayal MAKES Zero Day the way that it is. I could go on and on about the contrasts and how they handled the portrayal of the shooting and the end and even the audience reaction. People who hear about one through the other immediately assume they're going to be the same, and that's EXACTLY what happened with you.
@@b3nnyrabb1t Seriously? You typed out a bunch of babbling to basically say: "I am going to assume things about what someone thinks." I'll sum it up for you. I watched "Elephant" to see what the director's take on it was and I thought it was a boring failure. The fact that you have to whine about it says way more about you than it does me. Have a good day/night, etc.

Not sure if you didn’t show it bc RUclips cracks down on certain things but I watched this movie back in 2018 I think,it was posted on RUclips fully. They actually have a scene with Andre and Cal making things for the attack in detail. When I go back to look for the movie it’s usually cut out in some uploads. Understandable though
@@maxmayfire9958 There's an uncut full version recently uploaded that has (as far as I know, from what I've heard about the censored scenes) all of the scenes that were cut from other uploads. it's pretty easy to find now, and it was REALLY recently uploaded, like 5 months ago recently. I watched a slightly censored version, found out there were censored and cut scenes and went to Tumblr looking for an uncut version.
Honestly, it's why I love the film so much. The characters feel so real and connected and the portrayal is just so human it can definitely be unnerving the first time you watch it, ESPECIALLY as the movie goes on and you see them kind of. Come apart at the seems and their masks slip, ESPECIALLY Cal's because it doesn't seem like he wants to kill other people as much as he just wants to kill himself, but when you see that CCTV footage you realize that wasn't really true. He wanted to kill them just as much as he wanted to kill himself. It's more unnerving and shocking than Andre's development throughout the movie because he is noticeably off. I think the most shocking part of Andre's character is the end, when he hesitates to go along with Cal and shoot himself. Especially because he seems to have moved on from the pipe dream of running away with Cal when they burn their things.
The various shots are so good. A lot of nightmare shots, shots that just make everything in the shot look weird, angles are so awkward perfect framing.
4:56 I think a big part of acting is that it's a human thing that people do for fun and for the love of it - even in a dark movie, you can have a fun family moment for the actors and the people watching can feel it. I think that's what's missing at times with the emphasis on SFX and such vs a movie with a tiny budget like this that just focuses on the acting itself and the story building and the love of acting - there's a reason to watch and love one more than the other or equally in different contexts. You can just feel a specialness from a scene like this - it's just acting and recording at its roots, a family improvising a scene together, you can almost hear the tongue in cheekiness when he says "today, you 18th birthday" like this sort of inside joke.
Extremely underrated movie. I remember watching this back when I was like 16, which I'm in my 30s now, after coming across that end scene on liveleak or a site like it. Being the good ADHD person that I am, I had to get all the information I could about it after I came out of the shock 😂.
It's what they wanted and talked about in their journals. To leave a lasting impression and have movies about them. Tbh I don't think they would've like the movies they wanted it more in the style of natural born killers, but they would approve of all the mass murderers, even the terrorist attacks like September 11 they fantasized about doing something similar
Also I noticed how they said they came up with the idea of school shootings when there had not only been a mass shooting at a primary school a few years before but also a large mass shooting that killed 35 people in 1996 here in Australia so they didn’t come up with the idea
@@TheGOATAtBeingBased what the shooting at a primary school? Well it’s the Dunblane massacre and the perpetrator shot himself before the police could get him so Eric and Dylan probably stole that from Dunblane and took credit and the one in Australia was the port Arthur massacre it’s the worst mass shooting in Australian history and at the time it was the worst mass shooting by a lone gunman until 2011
Actually I did see this I’ve seen it a few times since I first discovered it but I think I found it on Netflix the first time I saw it, long ago. It’s actually a very good movie and the actors did a great job making the “found footage” convincing. It definitely brings awareness to this type of situation and how something like this would happen. Hopefully for those who have seen it it gave them a little insight on what to be aware of. Great movie with some really good acting. The final security camera scenes make you sick to your stomach as it should. Very well done low budget representation of the horrors to look out for.

such an unforgettable masterpiece - a film that could have easily come off as exploitive, opportunistic and “too soon” feels authentic and grounded in it’s depiction of high school alienation. one of the scariest movies i’ve seen to this day.. and mainly due to the performances of Andre and Calvin, who are so scarily convincing for two kids with essentially no acting experience whatsoever. it really drives home the fact that no one really knows what bubbling beneath the surface of angsty, misunderstood teens - it makes you connect with them, hoping that their plan is a sick fantasy and they won’t go through with it.. which makes the last ten minutes so much more horrifyingly grim. the repressed anger and undertones of a homoerotic relationship between Andre and Calvin is subtle and provocative - definitely the most fascinating and disturbing film made about school shootings in america to this day imo, great vid
masterpiece ? it is cowardice trash! nothing more!
Another great found footage movie similar to the theme of Zero Day, and a more recent example (2013-14 I believe) is a movie called
“The Dirties”. Highly recommend it.
I've heard good things I'll check it out
the dirties is such a good film!
The Dirties really captures the essence of the shooter being a pretty normal guy. The final scene of that movie is super realistic and chilling.
Came here to say this; it's amazing how well that movie was able to feel so uneventful even when you knew the outcome and then still gut punch you when it got down to brass tacks. That ending is absolutely fucking haunting
i love this movie a lot, andre and cal were so good in their roles. it has stuck with me for so long.

@@myownbubble1 lol I fucking agreeee - sorry for the late reply btw lmao 😂 I suck at that
I saw it way back around graduation.
When he shows "bullets" to the camera, pretty sure those are nitrous oxide canisters for whipped cream 💀
He shows only one Nos canister i think , but no its bullets and shells
If you watch the movie, he shows C02 canisters and says "C02 canisters for BB guns" then he shows .22 ammo and talks about it for a couple seconds. This video just has bad editing during that part.
Tell me you a foo without telling me you a foo. Fsfs
'bulletes de aguilla.... christina aguilla' i think about this quote from this movie way too fkn often. he shows the bullets to the camera in the actual film, it was just edited odd in this video ahaha

I saw this movie in like 6th grade and I was just thinking about it the other day. Such a crazy film, but a sad but true story that we cannot ignore.
@@voteZDLRthat’s because gun violence in movies is rarely realistic, shotguns and rifles will blow parts off people, collapse heads etc.
I saw this in theatres when it came out.

But then it finally got to the school scene… And it was just… weird, I didn’t know how to react to it
The film is plain weird, because I felt like I was actually watching 2 losers carry their ‘master plan’
It's on RUclips right now
Im ashamed to admit that the bit with the double barrel got a hearty chuckle outta me
my main issue with elephant was that it felt to "sterile". void of emotion. which is like fine for the first half of the movie, which just protrays like "a normal day at school" which can be quite sterile and emotionless. but the second half it is still void of many emotionions IMHO.
like the killers expressing very little emotions while carrying out what they did. which is the opposite of what witnesses report of the real life equivalents. they made it look more like they are robots instead of people who let their dark thoughts and emotions overcome them
The original movie Elephant was named after was also very sterile and emotionless, showing a series of random killings in Ireland during "the troubles," with pretty much no detail or dialogue.
This is actually the point of the film.

It’s honestly crazy how real it seems, they played there rolls a lil to real…
Especially because he seems to have moved on from the pipe dream of running away with Cal when they burn their things.
i’ve seen this flim, and it’s amazing. One of my favorites but Duck the carbine high massacre is #1
The various shots are so good.
I remember the saw zero day on RUclips because it was listed as “the columbine tapes”

I remember watching this over pumped up kicks back then, it’s somehow now regaining popularity
Been searching for this video for years and thought it was named “zero hour” FINALLY
Wonder what the actual perpetrators would think of not only people being inspired by them but also this film
It's what they wanted and talked about in their journals. To leave a lasting impression and have movies about them. Tbh I don't think they would've like the movies they wanted it more in the style of natural born killers, but they would approve of all the mass murderers, even the terrorist attacks like September 11 they fantasized about doing something similar
they would expect it considering one of the perpetrators wrote in their journal “I know we will have followers because we are so f’ing god like”
Also I noticed how they said they came up with the idea of school shootings when there had not only been a mass shooting at a primary school a few years before but also a large mass shooting that killed 35 people in 1996 here in Australia so they didn’t come up with the idea
@@Pinkmen-ho3fz what was it called?
Hopefully for those who have seen it it gave them a little insight on what to be aware of. i've avoided watching this video for a while because of the title, but that was a mistake. this is a wonderfully put together video. i didn't think this movie was scary, moreso depressing. maybe im in the odd or wrong party, but i can't help but be sad. there's so much to this movie that just makes me... so sad. yes, andre and cal are horrid and they're planning a mass murder the entire time, but they're clearly mentally ill teenagers. if only they were paid attention to, if their families had noticed the signs, if people had taken steps to get them help or remove the guns from the home.
calvin is such a clear depiction of a schizophrenic... coming from one. andre definitely has some black and white thinking and antisocial behaviors. both of them clearly needed help, and the fact that this could've been prevented just makes me so sad.
Imagine a found footage movie like this but from the perspective of the victims that would be hard to see
