Today I am at the ruins of Waverley Abbey in Surrey with film maker Marq English. A paranormal investigator and maker of travelogues himself, Marq was keen to show me some of the sights of this heritage rich county, including these fine ruins.
Waverley Abbey was the first Cistercian abbey in England. It was founded in 1128 by William Giffard, Bishop of Winchester. Located in Farnham, Surrey, about 2 miles southeast of the town centre, the abbey is situated on a floodplain, surrounded by current and previous channels of the River Wey. It was damaged on more than one occasion by severe flooding, resulting in rebuilding in the 13th century. Despite being the first Cistercian abbey in England, and being motherhouse to several other abbeys, Waverley was "slenderly endowed" and its monks are recorded as having endured poverty and famine.

That’s an amazing undercroft - a very impressive survival! I think I might have to take a peek there at some point!

Wonderful place , fascinating history and marvelous tree ~ I never let the weather stop me from getting out and exploring, unless it is just torrentially rainy or blowing a gale force , so I enjoy the waks in whatever weather you are able to get out in to film.. Great too know more background and details about the abbey itself, as well as Marq's interest in exploring the unseen and unknown ~

I only let the rain stop me when it prevents filming - we managed well that day!

Yes, I noticed during the winter weather, although you did say there probably would not be very many walks or a lot less , you actually did end up going out and braving the cold and even snow to do a bit of filming and walks, all of which I enjoyed. ~ thought it great that you braved the conditions on the rather slippery tracks at times.

Beautiful love when you and Marq work together. Have you ever mapped the yew trees you've visited to see if there is a pattern and what may have been there in the past? This one is so beautiful.

No, we haven't mapped the yew trees - interesting thought.

Of course, the river wey flows north into the Thames, not into the Arun to the south #geographygeek
I think the Wey (which is only navigable today to Godalming) was probably navigable to Farnham which would be one of the reasons why this was a good place for the abbey. (And a bad place, hence the flooding!)

Henry VIII destroyed so much in his greedy and selfish life also Oliver Cromwell too.I like that background sound as it completes the videos nicely.
