Reaction to Jeff Satur Rain Wedding: • Reacting to Jeff Satur...
Ok, so about ordination: it's one of Thai traditions that (usually at age of 25, but can be later) son would become a monk for a while (from a few days up to 3 months I think) to pay respect to his parents. Sek, Tongkam's husband, wanted to do it for his mom, but didn't get to. So Tongkam (Jeff) offers to do it instead of him to pay respect to Sek's mom so that she accepts him as her son (and eventually lets him take the orchard).
Mo (Engfa) is in fact a caregiver for Sek's mom with disability and sort of her adopted daughter, but not legally. She is just an orphan who works for her for food and place to live (and also to help her brother). So she also hopes that Sek's mother legally adopts her as a daughter and gives the orchard to her.
I've watched the movie, it's awesome, all the actors do amazing work, it's shot beautifully too, director is great, even if it's his first movie (also for Jeff, and he wasn't sure he'd do justice to this complex character, but he nailed the role)v and without spoiling much it's a very intense and complicated story about all sorts of injustice and inequality that poor people and minorities can face currently in Thailand. It's a very Thai story with lots of local specifics, but I believe it's also a universal one as inequality exists everywhere.
Thanks for the breakdown I really appreciate it, now it makes so much more sense, I will definitely see this movie.
@meraki-22 You're welcome! I watched it 5 times in the cinema and loved it a lot, even if it's harsh sometimes and I did cry. It was one of the most successful movies in Thailand this year and got lots of praises from critics at big international festivals like one in Toronto. We hope it will be on Netflix eventually like previous movies by this company, but as for now it's shown in cinemas. They're moving with it gradually, so hopefully more countries will be able to get it.
jeff is just absolutely incredible. everything he does is just top tier
