    Last time I dead lifted I hurt my back doing sets of 245 lbs. I was wearing sneakers not, not setting up properly with my feet, grip, taking the slack out, no weight belt, and not driving like in a leg press with my legs. Thank you. I just repped 315 5x after recovering from that injury and it didnt bother me at all. Felt like I could keep going. I was nervous of the excruciating nerve pain in my lower back again, but went for it and I couldn't be happier. I'm planning to be smarter about my deadlifts and continue to use your research to aid me in preventing long term injury. Thanks for all your hard work that has impacted my life.

    Dr. Layne Norton is the truth. People can throw shade all they want at the end of the day he's a smart dude with credentials from left to right and a flat out beast. Doctorate degree in nutritional science, world record holding powerlifter, pro-bodybuilder and so forth. I like how he keeps it 100% and backs up his opinion with actual science not just hear say or bro talk. I'm grateful for his programming and I thank him for his dedication. My big 3 lifts are sitting raw right now at 505lbs bench press, 700lbs squat and 750lbs deadlift all from following his advice in the gym along with hard work.

      Short people like ourselves usually have a faster muscle mass gain, I even think that we progress easier than tall people because of the shorter distance. Just go for it! Look at Jeff Nippard and Phil Daru.

  • @notimportant3686

    i don't deadlift anymore, but when i did, i much preferred the touch and go than waiting between reps... i did higher rep ranges (never lower than six, most sets leading up to it in the 8-10 plus range), the thing is deadlifts are HARD and i have only a certain amount of work that my body is capable of in one set... let's say that amount is 20 seconds of work (don't know exactly, never measured)... whether i wait between reps or i don't, i won't be able to work longer than that with the maximum weight i can move... so by going without pause i can get an extra rep or 2 in that set... you don't have to bounce the weight at the bottom... in fact all i do is touch the plates to such a light degree that the weight never stops burdening my back and legs (never unloads)... FOR ME PERSONALLY it was a great body builder move... that's A LOT OF WORK with heavy(relatively) weight and no rest... it got me in shape QUICK compared to other exercises

    I feel somewhat stupid passing along advice on a Layne Norton video.....but I think the explanation of the sumo is pretty bare bones, wihch isn't great because I think it's a more technical lift. There's more than just "Spread the floor and lockout"
    My change would be to make the Sumo a 2 part lift - Spread the floor to break the ground and from that point focus on snapping the knees in and lock them out - then pull back to finish the lift by squeezing the glutes. Locking out the hips too early like as mentioned will leave you in a terrible position that will be almost impossible to lockout with.

    If form is a problem i suggest rack pulls , i have had back surgery i find that rack pulls are a lot better .i still deadlift with good form but i never go over 315 on DL , over 315 i rack pull , i am all natural at 57 years of age i tried a lot of thing all turn out to be bad for my health ,now i just use omega -3's and a multivitamin and whey protein to fill in between meals 3 full meals 2 protein shakes by the way i do old school workouts full body i use to use a splits but ran in to recovery issues , full body gives me the time i need to recover 3 day , squats , beach, Overhead press, DL both kinds , pull up , chins, t-bar row and other rows , biceps curls all kinds , triceps pushdowns , dips, skull crushers , close grip bench press for triceps, calf raise seated and standing , i don't do all the exercises in one day i split them up over a 3 day workout , 4 sets of heavy 5 to 8 reps , 4 to 5 sets 8 to 10 medium, 2 to 3 sets of 15 reps light day. compound movement are my bread and butter , if you never tried a full body tried it , Old school lifer wasn't wrong you can build good mass and muscle with full body , If you don't think so check out JaRon fit and leroy colbert on youtube. LIft hard and be safe , DO it right for longevity.

    The bar should actually be over your mid foot for the set up and then as you pull it gets closer to your body. I just read an article on T-Nation about how doing this will allow you to get your armpits over the bar and you'll be in a better position to pull.

  • @tannermaxwell7321
    @tannermaxwell7321 8 лет назад +29

    Deadlift is not a back workout though. It's a full body lift that should be mainly aimed at the hamstrings and glutes.

    • @conman1395
      @conman1395 7 лет назад +16

      Kek you're doing it wrong if that's the main area you're activating. Either that or your lower back isn't as strong as it should be. The primary movers should be your leg's posterior chain.

    • @johnalvares9808
      @johnalvares9808 7 лет назад +1

      What is making you hunch down and lift your body up into the air then, your Glutes and Hamstrings? HAHAHA

    • @lachlankimpton4923
      @lachlankimpton4923 7 лет назад +7

      you should not be hunching down

    • @dickjohnson5025
      @dickjohnson5025 7 лет назад +1

      You are correct, it is a compound lift, BUT the primary antagonists are lumbar, glutes and hams (i.e. Posterior Chain). You can do deads during back day or leg day, either is fine, but you shouldn't mix squats and deads.

    • @tannermaxwell7321
      @tannermaxwell7321 7 лет назад +1

      If you feel it mainly in your back then you're doing it wrong and you will hurt yourself. Lift with your legs and not your back people.

      Dead lifting is probably the most complex lift a person can do. Alot can go wrong. One rule of thumb to follow is if your lower (lumbar spine) back gets sore or fatigued while dead lifting you're doing something wrong

      +Farid Abuid Deadlift slippers?

    • @faridabuid7523
      @faridabuid7523 8 лет назад +1

      RebirthFitness anybody who pulls conventional should wear deadlift slippers in my opinion. For sumo you need a shoe that has a thin sole but also provides some sort of side support for your ankle not to roll/slip. Some good choices are wrestling shoes, SABO deadlift shoes, Metal shoes (the ones that Dan Green has), etc.

      no its not. In competition rounded back is allowd. also when executing a sumo deadlift its super hard to have a completely straight back. He does it 100% correctly.

    • @nathanmarch45
      @nathanmarch45 8 лет назад +1

      All top-level power lifters round their back. They've built up enough muscle to where they don't get injured doing it

    • @atlantairon6424
      @atlantairon6424 8 лет назад

      +Slava Kolesnikov the lower back just needs to be flat. upper back roundness is fine

    • @SlavaKolesnikov
      @SlavaKolesnikov 8 лет назад +1

      +Atlanta Iron watch Ed Coan and you will understand that you are mistaken. my upper also rounds. and I do it wrong, no doubt.

    • @atlantairon6424
      @atlantairon6424 8 лет назад

      +Slava Kolesnikov you have to realize that's Ed coan. He's himself. He lifts like "Ed coan" his stance the way he lifts is the way Ed Coans lifts. Every has to find what works for them

    • @SlavaKolesnikov
      @SlavaKolesnikov 8 лет назад

      :)😂 everyone is a homo sapiens with the spine. When you round your upper spine-u do it wrong, regardless of doing sumo or conventional. U can ask why it is wrong: when your shoulder blades are relaxed it means that you'll have to pull several extra inches at least, then round upper back form-is not proper form, meaning your core muscles are not in tension, it means u will lose up to 10-20% of max weight you can lift, and finally it increases the risk of injury drastically and it is just a matter of time when you'll get it.

      tommy vercetti A belt is completly unessesairy for more than 95% of the RUclips audience.
      If you need such a belt you are too weak and you have to reduce the weight.
      It is not good to talk about such a belt as an advice.
      Those who (really) need such a belt are very advanced and they don't need to watch this video.
      There had been a change in the past few years. Even advanced sportsmen don't use belts (except for very special moments).

    • @thebesthereeverwas
      @thebesthereeverwas 9 лет назад

      NoobOellie nice piece of information there but what it really comes down to is that the belt keeps you upright, so your abdominal muscles have to do less work and you can use more weight.
      you never really need it but as a powerlifter you will for the advantage.

    • @Oellie
      @Oellie 9 лет назад

      tommy vercetti A Powerlifter needs a belt in only a very few moments.
      In this video a belt seems to be important. That is absolutly wrong and a belt should be mentioned as a help for very few persons. Even powerlifters don't need belts. And 30 years back professionals told me: If you need a belt you are too weak. Work on your mobility. Work on your whole strength.
      (If you have injuries and other stuff then it is useful, everything else is weakness and/or you do your deadlift in a wrong way)

    The hardest part of the deadlift is trying not to piss people off by slamming the weights. It's amazing how many people are ignorant to the fact you can injure yourself if you lower the weight slowly!
