Last time I dead lifted I hurt my back doing sets of 245 lbs. I was wearing sneakers not, not setting up properly with my feet, grip, taking the slack out, no weight belt, and not driving like in a leg press with my legs. Thank you. I just repped 315 5x after recovering from that injury and it didnt bother me at all. Felt like I could keep going. I was nervous of the excruciating nerve pain in my lower back again, but went for it and I couldn't be happier. I'm planning to be smarter about my deadlifts and continue to use your research to aid me in preventing long term injury. Thanks for all your hard work that has impacted my life.
Dr. Layne Norton is the truth. People can throw shade all they want at the end of the day he's a smart dude with credentials from left to right and a flat out beast. Doctorate degree in nutritional science, world record holding powerlifter, pro-bodybuilder and so forth. I like how he keeps it 100% and backs up his opinion with actual science not just hear say or bro talk. I'm grateful for his programming and I thank him for his dedication. My big 3 lifts are sitting raw right now at 505lbs bench press, 700lbs squat and 750lbs deadlift all from following his advice in the gym along with hard work.

Wow, this is by far the most instructive deadlift video I've seen out here. Thanks so much! I will favorite this video and watch it a few more times as I increase the quality of my deadlift in the upcoming weeks. I'm curious to see if my pb will go up :)
Have had this video saved for years and many times come back to it as I get ready to deadlift. Still the best primer on deadlift ive ever seen. Kudos Layne!!!
Things you pointed out were pretty helpful when I acted out in gym. Thanks to your easy and scientific tips, I was able to work out better and also enjoy working out without any injuries. You are the greatest teacher. Thanks a lot. From South Korea.
Never tried a deadlift in my life. Being short with short arms its hard to get motivated. Hearing it from friends is hard to vision it when they are taller and have experience. Thank you for the step by step tutorial, will definitely take it light and easy.
Short people like ourselves usually have a faster muscle mass gain, I even think that we progress easier than tall people because of the shorter distance. Just go for it! Look at Jeff Nippard and Phil Daru.
Layne, this video, and all of your videos, give me so much information on form and technique! You are the man! I've started following your page and look forward to more from you! Great inspiration! Always wanna head right back to the gym after watching your vids! Keep up the great work!
i don't deadlift anymore, but when i did, i much preferred the touch and go than waiting between reps... i did higher rep ranges (never lower than six, most sets leading up to it in the 8-10 plus range), the thing is deadlifts are HARD and i have only a certain amount of work that my body is capable of in one set... let's say that amount is 20 seconds of work (don't know exactly, never measured)... whether i wait between reps or i don't, i won't be able to work longer than that with the maximum weight i can move... so by going without pause i can get an extra rep or 2 in that set... you don't have to bounce the weight at the bottom... in fact all i do is touch the plates to such a light degree that the weight never stops burdening my back and legs (never unloads)... FOR ME PERSONALLY it was a great body builder move... that's A LOT OF WORK with heavy(relatively) weight and no rest... it got me in shape QUICK compared to other exercises
I deadlifted just fine this AM with my worn out New Balance efforts. Tell you what, you get the slippers. Just make sure the colour matches your purse.
great vid. I have never done a dead lift. I suffer from a bad lower back. so I have alway been afraid to do them and do them wrong. so I will start very light and use the information you gave here thank you.
Layne!!! wow, another great video, and your timing is excellent! I'm just getting back into dead lifts (and squats) and I've never been sure of my technique....this is going to help big time. Thanks!!!
I feel somewhat stupid passing along advice on a Layne Norton video.....but I think the explanation of the sumo is pretty bare bones, wihch isn't great because I think it's a more technical lift. There's more than just "Spread the floor and lockout" My change would be to make the Sumo a 2 part lift - Spread the floor to break the ground and from that point focus on snapping the knees in and lock them out - then pull back to finish the lift by squeezing the glutes. Locking out the hips too early like as mentioned will leave you in a terrible position that will be almost impossible to lockout with.
Layne is the man! Solid tutorial. Been working on my sumo to emphasize on my hamstrings and inner quads. I still prefer regular deadlifts. Sumo is cheating lol

best video on deadlifting
Deadlift is not a back workout though. It's a full body lift that should be mainly aimed at the hamstrings and glutes.
Kek you're doing it wrong if that's the main area you're activating. Either that or your lower back isn't as strong as it should be. The primary movers should be your leg's posterior chain.
What is making you hunch down and lift your body up into the air then, your Glutes and Hamstrings? HAHAHA
you should not be hunching down
You are correct, it is a compound lift, BUT the primary antagonists are lumbar, glutes and hams (i.e. Posterior Chain). You can do deads during back day or leg day, either is fine, but you shouldn't mix squats and deads.
If you feel it mainly in your back then you're doing it wrong and you will hurt yourself. Lift with your legs and not your back people.
Nice vid, wish you also talked about the proper grip for the deadlift

Point toes out

Breathe & Brace
Pull Slack out of bar
Spread the floor apart
Squeeze gluteus and drive hips

His conventional deadlift techniques suck. His lower back is rounded even in demo.
Jeff Bear that's how I ruptured my disc
no its not. In competition rounded back is allowd. also when executing a sumo deadlift its super hard to have a completely straight back. He does it 100% correctly.
By Spernes that’s why he has a herniated disk
because he is lifting really heavy . Besides it's still a quite neutral position.
