There is always a little gold in volcanic regions, like New Mexico, where I also currently live. I recognize this soil sample, and there are more old mines of turquoise and other valuable stones than there are gold mines. The only serious gold mines I've known in NM are at the site of volcanic vents, not in the vent properly, but to the side where steam vents occurred, and heavy minerals collected.
