Having someone to clean up the house could reduce your stress.

That was successful then. I wonder if you hired a graduate from the Marie Kondo school of tidiness. Marie made a big splash with her books on how to get and stay organized. I am bipolar when it comes to tidiness. I binge on messiness for considerable lengths of time, when all horizontal surfaces, including the floor, are fair game for storage of all kinds (objects, files, magazines,…). Then I switch into high cleaning and organizing gear, complete with purging all unnecessary items, shredding sensitive documents and donating things I can no longer see a use for. Ironically, one of the items I once donated was Ms. Kondo’s book, which after three chapters and a quick browse of the rest, seemed too structured for me!
I knew I hit bottom when prior to hiring someone to clean the house I did some significant pre-cleaning, because I thought it was too messy even for a cleaning service!

That's exactly what we did! When the cleaner was coming, we ran around cleaning beforehand so she wouldn't judge us haha. And I (Jo) have a similar pattern with you - I'm messy messy messy, and then suddenly I go into hyper cleaning mode and throw tons of things out. Usually I end up getting distracted half way through though and end up in a worse position than when I started... Don't love that habit haha!
