It's 1975....and this is what started it all off for me. I first heard this song (on Radio Caroline) and I thought: *"what the hell is this brilliant music. It's just so different."* I then 'found' *The Stranglers!* What a brilliant band! And they have always been with me ever since.
RIP Dave Greenfield. Absolute genius. I still remember the first time I heard this, from my mate's cassette player in the Biology classroom at school :) I was *totally mesmerised* by the sound of the bass and organ - never heard anything like it. I cannot begin to guess how many times I must have heard this since.
I heard it first on John Peel's radio show in 1977 and it was a real 'what is that!?' moment. As you say, had never heard anything like it at the time.
Have seen the Stranglers several times in concert in Sydney. We were at the Bondi Lifesaver one night, and we were smoking a joint , right up at the stage, and Jean Jacques Burnell did a massive leap to the front of the stage where we were , and wanted a toke . Of course we held it for him while he had a couple of tokes...never missing a beat . I fell in love with him that night !! Saw them after the gig too...great bunch of fellas. Oh such sweet memories !!!
Brilliant! Been to Guildford a dozen times and still not been able to find them! Yeah - they were down in Sydney - getting stoned with some upsidedown birds ;-)
The Stranglers are so COOL & I LOVE them so much!! 😃 I feel so freakin LUCKY 2 have 2 of the kindest, coolest & most loving parents in the whole world! 😊 They got me into this amazing band when I was only 14 & ever since then I've just been HOOKED on em, I 'ave! 😅 Best of luck, take care & have a fab day, buddy! 😁✌
I think it was Freddie Snakeskin that used to play this on a regular basis before I would go to work in the morning. Stranglers for breakfast was a treat.
Heard a little clip from youtube and now I can't stop listening to the whole thing. Love the beat and intro and everything else. Thank you for expending my musical tastes
Saw them six times in my life, first in Edinburgh (79?), Nantes, Paris twice and now Madrid twice too, last time 3 years ago. Love them, definitely... Let's hang around life...
The first four Stranglers albums are amazing. They literally invented a sound and a sensibility, knocked it out of the park, and nobody has ever been able to replicate it.
First Punk Album was Rattus and I lived in a small village and of course I was deemed mad. Everyone else Elton John, ELO, Frampton it just to grizzly a list
..end of school life party 1977. Rattus Norvegicus was THE record. A year earlier it was Frampton Comes Alive or Rocky Mountain Way. What a change happened in our young minds and lives...
My first 'Punk' album, before Rattus I'd dismissed punk as media hype but they made me realise this was an exciting new era in music and my world view was changed forever. I've seen them many times since but Battersea Park will always be the most memorable. R.I.P. Dave, your amazing keyboard playing will live on.
i know that I should give today's pop music a chance, but when I hear brilliant songs like this, It just makes me want to time-travel back to the '80s.......the Era of an incredible volume of innovative music, and great performers, like The Stranglers! 😎📆💕👑👑🔥🔥
One of the best bands ever if you don't like this even just a little bit i don't even know what to say and to the people that put there thumbs down open your mind.
I saw the stranglers live in carlisle market hall,my home town in 1977 before I moved to Leeds to seek my fortune as a new wave musician. A life changing experience. They started with n m heroes jj b bass intro.A life changing experience 😮😢🎉🎉😂
Saw The Stranglers in Bogarts, small club in University Village, Cincinnati in the 80's. Lot more energy than the studio version here. Man, that was a poster for the 80's that concert, wow. About that same time we went to a concert where Van Halen was the Opening act for a band I cant remember any more and no one knew who Eddie Van was. Then they hit that "new" sensation MTV and the rest, as they say, ... Rock on.
TANK !! This and the Damned, what more be said? It took more than 20 years to track all of their albums down! And now, it's all on YT? It don't matter, I've got hardcopies!
This is such a good song about life/drugs circa 1977 in England Seriously mean-ass bass line The mellotron keyboard sound binds the whole song The farfisa keyboard rides up and down through the melody like a calliope on speed Bad ass vocals tell us the story (Did I mention the mean ass bass line?)
I skived off work as a dishwasher to see what this new wave was all about (I had just bought Patti Smith's "Horses") The Stranglers were third on the bill, 2nd was The Vibrators and top was The Tyla Gang (1976). I wrote in my diary, "very noisey, lots of shouting, interesting bass sound". They probably were pretty rough - live gigs don't sound like the record. Apparently the Damned played as well (I must have missed them) they ended up being my fave punk band. Not bad, four bands for 50p. We always thought the Stranglers were for wanna be punk hippies who were more into the Doors. No one pogoed to the Stranglers. Good stuff though.

just casually winding their tempo about the place musically hanging around 😆 Might I add, impressively doing so.
