I actually really like how you made yosano blame dazai and loose trust in him, especially with atsushi, because dazai is like a father/brother figure to him, but then you dumped all this extra trauma that akutagawa nor kyoka had, which really made them realize they're mistake, and when ranpo gave that talk just to convince them more. I kind of get Atsushi's dilemma here, Dazai saved him and now he finds out that Dazai (in his mind) was just like the headmaster. Except what Dazai did to Akutagawa was in a way still training. The PM is a harsh place, and undoubtedly Akutagawa wouldn't have been as strong without Dazai's training. Plus, Dazai had probably already analyzed Akutagawa's problem where he will do ANYTHING to get the one thing he doesn't have (not exactly but I don't feel like evaluating). Akutagawa is in a way the embodiment of his ability. SPOILER FOR BEAST As shown in Beast, he did everything in his power to get his revenge on the people who killed his friends and stuff. After that, when his sister was "stolen" from him by The Man in Black (Dazai). The original universe is the same, except his thirst was for Dazai's approval, but he didn't get that since Dazai left. Now I see a few possibilities on why Dazai did what he did. 1. This one is obvious. Get Akutagwa used to the harsh environments and train him. 2. Some extra reassurance that Akutagawa was loyal to the mafia. Since (at the time) Dazai was in the mafia, Akutagawa would need to stay in it to get his approval. This is HIGHLY unlikely, and most definitely not the main reason, but probably just something that, how do I word this, came with the package? 3. In the anime/manga Atsushi says to Akutagawa "I believe Dazai-san has acknowledged you long ago." This is further proven in the Dark Era light novel after Ango's betrayal is confirmed when Oda is in the hospital from his point of view. In the book, it says: "Akutagawa---he's like a sword without its sheath." Dazai grinned from ear to ear. "He'll surely become the mafia's strongest in the not-so-distant future, but for now he needs someone who can teach him how to put that sword away." I was surprised. I had never heard Dazai openly speak so highly of one of his men before. "Is he really that talented?" "When I first as him over in the slums, I was horrified. His talents are extraordinary, and his skill is extremely destructive. Plus, he's stubborn. If I'd left him to his own devices, he would've ended up a slave to his own powers until he destroyed himself." Dazai didn't freely make people work under him, period; much less a boy on the verge of starvation in the slums. But Dazai seemed to have his own reasons for doing it. (This has nothing to do with the topic, but in the anime, when Dazai first meets Akutagawa, he doesn't even show a sign of fear, showing how good he is at concealing his emotion. I'm sure everyone already knows this, just felt like pointing it out, I have a MAJOR bias towards Dazai) This is also pretty obvious to those who open their eyes and don't automatically blame Dazai for everything (I know that people have valid reasons to hate Dazai, but some reasons that they state aren't well thought out). Dazai did what he did to get Akutagawa used to the harsh environment of the PM. Also to (possibly) help him get rid of this habit, which could be used against him, which it is by Dazai after he joins the ADA. Thinking about Dazai's perspective, if anyone was able to do the same thing Dazai did to Akutagawa (make him want something he doesn't have), then that would make manipulating him easy, and since Akutagawa is extremely strong, that could be a bad thing for the PM. Ultimately, Dazai did what he did for the PM and (?) Akutagawa's good. I know this is multiple reasons squished into one, but separating it would make it longer (and yes, I did handwrite the excerpt from the Dark Era book since I only have the physical copy). I might edit this later if I have any more ideas (probably not).
I completely agree!! To be fair, in Atsushi’s defense, people can’t think logically in situations like that when you bombarded with info and unconsciously make assumptions.
