CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) is what prevents private owners of forested areas from removing deadfall and standing dead timber, or doing strategic logging and controlled burns to create fire breaks. Correct me if I'm wrong, but most private owners of forested land are in and around the exurbs. Logging, including removal of standing dead trees, is profitable. Even some deadfall can be sold for a profit. Private landowners interested in profit would for the most part be happy to let contractors do the work for them, and have the contractors pay THEM for the privilege. CA regulations don't allow it. CEQA also prevents or impedes construction of essential infrastructure. California hasn't built any new reservoirs since 1979. The population of the state has nearly doubled since then. And the wildfire risk has only increased (at least, according to the CA government). Also, what's this I hear about sea levels rising? Wouldn't you want to store fresh water in reservoirs rather than contribute to the rising sea levels by diverting it into the ocean? Or at least use it before you do? And it's all to "protect" the environment. Which has taken an absolute beating with this fire. The sheer volume of CO2 AND toxins released when 40,000 acres of forest and 12,000 homes burn? Congratulations. You just erased 15 years of climate policy in one fell swoop, and contaminated the environment with toxic, carcinogenic chemicals (of which CO2 is not one).
Yep, it is actually the kind of progressive policies that made the handling of these forest fires (started by arsonists for the most part) more difficult. If they believe in climate change, then they should be more prepared but believing in climate change means demonizing CO2 so controlled burns done in the past will be a no-no. Protecting certain plant and animals species (environmentalism) goes hand in hand with climate change policies. And then they want all vehicles to be electric. An electric fire truck is not sustainable and unreliable even if they had the budget for these trucks, but they actually cut the budget to maintain their existing trucks. Forest fires and earthquakes are endemic in CA and it will not change even if they force the whole world to go "green" so they just need to learn from Japan where people and the government are prepared for their natural calamities even though disasters will still occur but at least, minimized.
