Check out Papoose Flats S/E of Big Pine. Lots of cool rock formations and no one goes there. Then you are close to the North Pass of Saline Valley which is a pretty drive. Lots of trees and cool cabins & mine sites until you get to the valley floor. Hit the hot springs for a nice soak then exit through South Pass. You can turn East into DV or West to Olancha and Hwy 395.
@@onememories8523 Super easy. Its a little rocky (small rocks/shale 2/10) from the hwy to the pine trees. Once through the trees there is one narrow section ( F250 4 door fullsize-the dogs are horrible rock spotters) that is slightly technical 3/10). Once you are up on the plateau its a two-track from the West side through the South side and almost to the East. Think of a clock face. The loop (maybe 6-8 miles??)gets rocky again at about 5 o'oclock position through about 1-2 o'clock. There is a steep bypass at about 5 o'oclock that winds up and reconnects at about 2-3 o'oclock. Most of the rock formations are in the S/W part of the bowl shaped plateau. You will see a couple of side roads where there is good camping in the trees and views of 395 South of Big Pine. On the South end of the plateau there is a road that cuts down Mazorka (sp) Canyon down to Independence near the dump & county jail. I have NOT been there for about 10 years. One thing I loved about the trails is they change after every rain. I would definitly recommend this and Coyote Flats. Check out Google Earth.
Ran up that trail in my heavy ass Tacoma with 34’s before I did my regear. No problem whatsoever in low range, it just scooted right up. 4Low is your friend, my friend, save that transmission!

I’ve only been posting weekly for just over one year. Jumped 1K in last week. This is my favorite place I’ve filmed also. I tried to go back by myself the other week but the snow was too deep to go alone.
Awesome trip! I looked around there once last year but didn't see that trail. Looks like a return visit is required! I don't know if anything is available for a Toyota transmission but I added a deeper sump finned aluminum trans pan on my Chevy tow vehicle with an external trans cooler. Towing my trailer on the hottest days up the steepest inclines and the hottest the trans got was 210 degrees. Once I get to a flat area, it literally goes down below a hundred degrees. Kudos to a friend who owned a trans shop and did all the custom work for me.
I'm no expert in the matter, but with the larger tires on your rig and the added weight from your gear, it sounds like your truck is a prime candidate for a re-gear. Long sustained climbs with the larger tires is asking a lot of the transmission. Enjoyed the video. Eastern Sierras is a special place.
Thanks for all the great content. I would definitely plan a road trip, if and when you decide to do a meetup! My 2018 Taco is ready for her first real adventure.
Camping at its best.], scenery out of this world, drone footage epic the Tacoma is a beast. That is flippen steep trail. Yes, agree not all always goes as plan but that make overlanding so special. The mountains wow thanks for sharing greetings from South Africa
Awesome video again, 🤘! Did that trail 2 years ago on a 4 day solo trip. Found the trail by accident. I wish I had a drone at that time. Also hiked the bristlecone trail. Need to explore that area again. I just finished a 5 day solo trip in the Trona-Death Valley area. My inclinometer was hitting past 30 degrees on the dash on some areas. Way more steeper than that trail for sure.
@@jonnytacooutdoors Check out South Park Canyon/Pleasant Canyon road in Death Valley. There should be some videos here in youtube. Beautiful views on this route. And clean and usable cabins along the route you can use.
I agree 95% adventuring. Just keep some "how to" videos on stuff like On x, and Giai GPS and other hacks. I'm taking notes and will hit the trail on a limited basis in 2024. Cheers!

Never go above 230 degrees on trans temperature. Change out that fluid as soon as you get home or you will have burnished trans parts and burnt oil..cheap insurance and easy to do so don't wait. Your videos are rock solid !!!
Haha Jonny Ramen is fair. I will bring tacos back to the channel sometime this year. The content is stacked and lots of cool videos are coming. I edit non stop it feels like. Hope you enjoy the videos.
Johnny, man I love your videos. I’m in So. Cal and you are giving me so many options for places I want to go. I’m a little more limited as far as how far out I can go because I’m in a Tesla Model Y but currently building it for overlanding etc. I just did a lift kit with Method Wheels and BFG K02’s with much more to come. It’s got about 10” of ground clearance and I figure it will be every bit as capable if not more so than a lifted Subaru. Once I have more stuff put together to be ready for back woods camping I’d totally be down for going out with you sometime if you’re ever up for it. Keep up the great work.
Ran this trial in September with a group of friends. We just found a random trail while in the area. 1st gen Toyota sequoia, 80 series Land Cruiser, and a wj. We all didn’t expect the climb to be that intense. For sure a 4lo. Gotta run 1st or 2nd gear to get the clutch fan spinning quicker to help move more air. That’s a big reason why your temps were so high.
@@jonnytacooutdoors I’m carrying easily 650 lbs on a rig over the back axle with almost 300k miles on 35s with stock gearing so I was for sure lugging the transmission even in low range. Less weight in the 80 for sure, but the wj definitely had some heft in the back end too
@@jonnytacooutdoors of course! New subscriber! Content was great, drone footage was top notch and liked how you didn’t call out exactly where you are camping. The general area is known, but the little spots people need to try to adventure and find themselves!

If you haven’t already, I’d invest in an aftermarket transmission cooler. Cheap(ish) insurance for transmission longevity. Slow climes in 4WD and lack of airflow are a bad combo.
Great video brother! Just curious what size tires and gear ratio are you running? I understand you’re carrying extra weight that might be contributing to the excessive heat on your transmission
