  • Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords of Accept.
    I've had a lot of requests for Wolf Hoffmann and the music of Accept, so when I put today's lessons together, I decided early on to go ahead and create a Wolf Hoffmann Three-For-All along with an Accept-focused Chordplay lesson - so here you go!
    I hope you have as much fun working through and watching these two lessons as I did making them. Wolf is a monster musician and his ideas come from everywhere - rock, hard rock, metal, classical, blues, and so much more.
    This lesson focuses on Wolf's signature and patented hard rock riffing and while he plays traditional power chords in his music (and regular major/minor chords) he also has a gifted way of attacking the strings with his picking hand while ravaging his guitar with intricate double-stops, partial chords, and implied tonalities.
    Most of his famous riffs, fills, and solos are based around or partially influenced by classical music, which makes everything that Wolf does within his music exciting, interesting, and decidedly different. Instead of being focused on technique or shredding his way through classical music and concepts, Wolf is more interested in targeting the moods, themes, melodies, and textures that you hear, which is a unique approach and such a breath of fresh air - musically speaking.

    Hoffmann is a riff GOD. I've interviewed him twice, and he's a really good guy, too. I LOVE LOVE LOVE his guitar work. Back when the band went on hiatus in the 90s and he was selling off gear, I bought his Hamer V (seen on the cover of 'Classical') and his stereo Marshall head (used on The Final Chapter and Death Row).

      Oh man I feel vindicated!!! I LOVE WOLF TOO!!! He was a MAJOR influence on my playing.His rythm/riffs wer crushing AND tasty. Awsome right hand. His leads, were clean, tight, ferocious, so focused.Best leads r the ones u can hum. His stuff always ADDED to the song. And, he didnt rely on gimmicks, or gear/fx. Just his fingers, guitar, and amp. Beautiful technique. I'm really happy to see others giving him some cred.I dont know why he never got more attention. I would play a wolf riff at rehearsal, I get a BIG...WHATS THAT/IS THAT YOURS??? NOOOO, its ACCEPT!!! Oh.😴 I played their 2010 release for a few younger DJENT rockers and they LOVED IT!!!

    Wolf used the 'house' Marshalls at Dieter Dirks studio in Cologne, Germany. He mainly used his 1979 white Gibson Flying V with Bill Lawrence L-500 pickups for BTTW, but switched to EMG 81 for Metal Heart and Russian Roulette after hearing Vinnie Vincent rave about EMG's around 1984. Wolf also used a Fender Strat with the EMG 81. I found out many years later that one of the secrets to Wolf's tone was the use of a Rangemaster Treble Boost. That to me, is how he got that tight, punchy tone that seemed to swell and "bloom" when he let chords sustain. One of my favorites guitar tones of all time.

    • @Scottocaster6668
      @Scottocaster6668 4 года назад +1

      Nice! I'll stick with the Bill Lawrence p.ups. ( if I had a choice) I love his tone, and like you described how it Swelled during a sustained chord. 👍

    • @scottdunn2178
      @scottdunn2178 4 года назад +2

      Skümmtööns '66 Yeah, I always thought Wolf (and Herman Frank) used a compressor to get that singing sustain, but I only found out about 5 years ago he used a Rangemaster... and those do have a natural compression, as well as bump the mids.
      Best Regards 🎸

      @@scottdunn2178 Wow, I did not know that or what the Rangemaster did. Thank you for the info!👍. Be safe my friend.

      @@Scottocaster6668 The Dallas-Arbiter Rangemaster Treble Booster was developed in the 1960's to give a brighter high end to a lot of amplifiers of the day that tended to be rather dark sounding. It's not really a treble booster per say as the name implies... it's actually got a really nice upper midrange boost, that combined with the Germanium transistors it also provides slight overdrive tone that can't be found on other devices. Original Rangemasters are quite expensive and are not the most reliable. Fortunately, there are a lot of boutique companies that make a very good replica of the Rangemaster. A simple Google search should put you on the right track if you're looking for something like an original version.
      Regards.

    • @Scottocaster6668
      @Scottocaster6668 4 года назад +1

      @@scottdunn2178 That was going to be my next question, the price. Funny you said it gives off a more of a mid range. I tend to boost the mids on my settings, it kinda gives chords and notes a "personality". IDK, maybe it's my ears but I think more mids makes chords sound enhanced. I'll definitely be looking into one of those in the future. Thanks again 😊👍.

    Man, this is good. Wolf Hoffmann and Herman Frank both are badasses. I remember back in 84 when I started taking guitar lessons, my teacher ( Heavy Metal Mike aka Mike Cross of Sponge ) taught me those platinum riffs and chord patterns from the Accept jams I requested. He called them " phantom chords ". A year later my band used to do the Traxx Tuesday night showcase and we did Guardians of the Night and Turn me On. woooah, the response was sick. The solo from Princess of the Dawn is like a painting, you can dupe it, but it'll never be like the original, lol. Wolf and the boys will always have my respect. 10 Stars on this one !!!!

    Ah you did put Love Child on there I see. Very good! Just a side note, when Wolf plays that opening riff to Balls To The Wall he uses an open G chord with the 2 middle strings. I think it gives it a little more bite. He is honestly one of the most underrated players in metal. When you hear about all the greats like Randy Rhoads, Eddie Van Halen, or even Yngwie, you never hear his name come up. When I first heard Restless and Wild and heard the solo to Fast As A Shark I I was blown away. Of course I was 12 and a lot of stuff blew me away then, but when Balls To The Wall came out it made me wanna break stuff lol. Wolf is fantastic.. he does play Balls with never leaving the 2nd position using open strings as much as he can.. he has a short YT vid on how he plays is.. says people miss the chugs sometimes between chords that keeps it bounding.. his new stuff includes much more chugging than in the past... but totally the =same crushing riffs and melodic fills.. Blood of the Nations may be his finest work..

    I know this is going to sound a bit "wishy washy" but honestly Accept's "Balls to the Wall" is one the most progressive metal albums out there. There lyrics are really touching in a lot of songs and speak about real issues (Like "Love Child" talking about the struggles of someone who is questioning their own sexuality or gender, or "Losing More Than You've Ever Had" about taking a loved one for granted, or "Losers and Winners" about how men need to stop being afraid of rejection, etc. Stuff that speaks to a lot of people to this day) but it also has more classic Metal anthems like "Turn Me On" or "London Leatherboys" etc. Anyways, great video and really underrated classic metal band.

    • @lxathu
      @lxathu 4 года назад +3

      I like more or less all their works from the 80s but they really put their best together writing BttW. All the solos show that they really meant that all parts had to be composed not just played by random, whatever the moment would bring.

    They are more Accept riffs rather than Wolfs: « balls » riff written by Stefan, « another second » by Jorg.
