What I ate while hiking the French Pyrenees (GR10)

- In July 2023 I hiked the French Pyrenees with Laurent. We did a brutal pace and finished the 954 km hike in 30 days - averaging 1800m of elevation gain a day! The one bright side was that we actually didn't have to carry much food because we would reach a town every few days.
We violated many ultralight principles. We always shared a baguette, carried a stick of butter, heavy cans of pâté, and yummy charcuterie and cheese.
In the forests near the rivers we lucked out and picked many wild chanterelles. We made many meals with the chanterelles - omelettes, pastas, and tapas. We gave some to any hiker who crossed our paths. We also stopped and picked wild blackberries, field strawberries, and fields upon fields of blueberries.
The Pyrenees is a bit frozen in time. Nobody offers WiFi, cell reception is weak, and credit cards aren't always accepted. There are many self serve - honor system - shops where you add up the items you chose and drop cash into a box.
This was a super tough hike but I will always have fond memories of the epic meals we had on this hike.
Am thinking of trying to walk the GR10 in 30 days this September. Do you have any details of your itinerary you could share?
I could share the exact itinerary but I don't think that's the most useful. It's also not how we planned. Some days there are severe thunderstorms and you have to stop, or the heat is just too much.

Then you just have to hit 30-35kms a day. Our biggest day was 42kms. After the first week you'll see how fast you do the uphills and downhills. And how much you differ from their estimated times. We planned things around food. So if you walk at a fast pace you don't need to carry more than 2-3 days of food. You might need to eat at a gite or something in town.
