I wanted to watch the anime, but I couldn't find the original Macross series in any form I could legally watch. I heard they changed a few things for Robotech and even more for this game, but I hadn't watched the series and couldn't confirm that directly. I'm with you on that one! My library consists of so many mech games, it isn't funny. I'm not actually emulating these, I'm just running them through OBS - but sometimes it dips the quality for some reason, sadly. :C

@@KeiNova I was heavily into Mechas and also Gundams in the mid to late 90s and 2000s. There wasn't much where i lived and even less games (Well, quite okay actually at the time :D). Never wached or read Robotech. Even now. I think i have to watch it at some point. I played the Game on OG Xbox and i loved it, but i preferred Mech assault and Mech assault 2 overall. And AC. Robotech and the Artstyle were way better (for me, but not everything of course. The Mech Warrior Universe is just different, but still great.), but when i was younger, Mech assault was more forgiving.
I remember that i bought it "blind" at a store at a discount. Bought it because i liked Manga/Anime Mechas. I would say i lovehated the game. I found it Interesting in general, because it was so different, it clearly had its problems and the overall playstyle is not what brings me the most joy. But the Style, the Sounds, Animations, Gameplayfunctions. I still think it is special. At least for me. Even without knowing Robotech really good. Back in the day i always thought Robotech was a Japanese Franchise lol.

I bought a used PS2 copy for $5.00 over two years ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Granted, some levels were harder than others, in fact I wore out one control knob in my controller, but I beat Battlecry twice. The last line Jack Archer says in the game "The future looks bright" as he floats stranded in space, is symbolic of the Robotech fandom waiting in vain for new things to come in the franchise from Harmony Gold....

I'm glad you enjoyed it. A lot of people did, and I can see why. I tried my best to like it, but the further I went the more frustrating it got and more and more did the flaws show. Objectively, it was just plain mediocre, and I mean, even people that liked it will say the same. I would have lived with most of the issues if I could actually use the Varitech as it was designed, instead levels were designed around certain modes at certain times. Too often would I take off as a jet to immediately hit a bounding box that reminded me this game's levels just weren't properly done. It had potential, and maybe I should have said that.
I really wish the original series would be put on Blu-Ray and remastered, you know? Instead, I have to dig up iffy translations.

I loved the cel shading choice and think it makes a massive difference it making it feel like the show...plus, the best part of Cel Shading, which is that to me, even 20 years later, it still holds up decently well....something that cannot be said for most games from that period.

I don't really understand what he means when he says the game isn't "anime?" The characters have the right clothes and terminology. It looks 90% like the anime. They probably limited in what they could do but it looks ok within what they did. As for the game play. You have to move and dodge. You were tanking missiles when you could have transformed into robot mode and shot them down with your gun. Jet mode is good for quick escapes.

The game changes the anime style of the original for a more stylized American style, only the portraits in the game are like the anime or of an anime style. Its cartoony, not like the anime and not like the comics. The footage at the beginning of the game is the original Macross/Robotech and this game looks like Ben 10. Vicious Cycle games is a company that made terrible licensed games, they made Kung Fu Panda 3, Ben 10, Despicable Me, etc. There are plenty of anime games at the time that looked like the anime, so there is no excuse on their part. This was an intentional change. And I did move and dodge, I played over 40 hours of this game for the footage I had and I beat it several times (I had been trying not to include spoilers when I made this). Objectively, the game is bad. It was said to be bad by many, and I respect the fact you enjoyed the game but it was ultimately not a good game and was followed by a terrible sequel. Thanks for the comment!

I'm an old anime nerd, so I picked up this game for PS2 back in the day. I quite liked it. It is pretty mediocre in a lot of ways, but it was the first Macross game I every played that was actually kinda fun. (I looked up that PS2 Macross game you mentioned, it honestly doesn't look like much fun to me. To each their own.)
The purists will complain about Robotech "bastardizing" Macross back in the 80's, but I've always thought that was overblown. I've watched both, and I thought Robotech did a pretty good job of making Macross broadcast-able in the US. They had to drop the music and make a few "world-building" changes, but I thought a few of the changes were even improvements. (There were a couple of releases of Macross about 10 years back, but it is hard to come by both free and legally. Robotech is streamed like, everywhere. )
You complain a lot about the art style in Battlecry, but it's not like Macross hasn't changed their art style. Even "Do You Remember Love" (where you took most of your comparison animation from) looks VERY different from the original TV series. In Battlecry I just chalked that up to Vicious Cycle obviously have no budget. It felt to me like they decided to do their best with what they had to try to make the game fun, rather than worrying about nice FMV, or realism, or... enemy animation.:D

@@KeiNova Macross Plus in particular is just awesome. It reminds me a lot of the new Top Gun movie if you've seen it, in terms of quality. If Macross Plus was put in theaters and advertised far and wide I have no doubt it would become as big as Top Gun Maverick.
I'm not a big Mecha guy, those are the only two Macross I've seen but I will add that for Gundam you should watch Gundam Thunderbolt from 2016. It has a soundtrack that's entirely Free Jazz, a genre that most find impenetrable and harsh but when it's set to extremely intense and unimaginably fast mecha combat - free Jazz becomes perfect. Thunderbolt is the first of two and it's the best of the maybe 3 Gundam things I've ever watched. The follow-up "December Sky" is solid but no it's no Thunderbolt 2016.
If you watch Macross Plus and Gundam Thunderbolt (2016) you will be able to say you've seen, arguably, some of the best and greatest stuff that both Macross and Gundam have to offer. Both are less than 2 hours total so no need to worry about watching a ton.

It’s definitely a very flawed game with some solid mechanics. Unfortunately a lot of it’s good points can only be appreciated at higher levels of play. For example, the altitude restrictions in certain maps become an interesting challenge for speed runs and bosses despite being bullet sponges with limited AI movement become fun time-attacks. I have examples of these in my channel such as the boss stage Knife’s Edge where I clear that in 2 minutes and 30 seconds with the least armored Veritech in the game in ‘hard’ difficulty. I put it in quotes since all it does is buff enemy damage output with no changes to AI behavior.
The actual Macross games in Japanese are objectively much better. I love those games and spent hundreds of hours playing them. However Battlecry is the closest at letting the player fly the way it’s presented in the show. The caveat to that is that the player has to really know the game mechanics to even come close to emulating it which unfortunately the game does a terrible job at training the player to do. For the few that get to that point, the game is an entirely different experience. I suppose the closest comparison I can make is Starcraft Brood War gameplay styles in the late 90 to early 2k versus the playstyles that were developed a decade after thanks to the Korean esports scene.
Battlecry is still a very fun game today at least in my opinion. Unfortunately it can really only be appreciated by a very few percentage of people that have an investment in both the series and the games core mechanics. For pretty much everyone else it’s a big mess with clunky controls and poor design choices, all of which are valid and fair criticisms of the game.

As a person playing it through and tends to look at stuff in a critical way - I couldn't help but notice the legion of flaws that prevented me from actually enjoying the game as much as I probably could have. I suppose I should have mentioned that the limitations of the consoles likely played a huge part in the inability to utilize the various modes in the game, I'll have to be careful to mention things like that in the future!

@4:44 The design that the game uses there is from the Macross TV series (which was the basis of Robotech Part 1). A little off-top and unrelated to the series, but about "Jet Mecha" - there is a short arcade, but still quite solid game called "Gun Metal" released in 2002 on PC and Xbox, as well as now available on Steam with good compatibility with modern hardware and a fairly cheap discount price, which also has this feature with turning a Mech into a fighter plane. It takes just literally an hour and a half or two to complete all the available missions, there is no plot, except for the mission task, the gameplay is completely arcade, but it seemed quite pleasant even to this day, but of course there are also tangible disadvantages in control at the end of the game. Battlecry was actually my first exposure to Robotech and SDF Macross. I remember playing it a fair bit as a kid, but I didn't get very far due to its difficulty. It was probably the first genuinely fun mech game I ever played, as although I played that weird Phantom War DS sequel to the MechAssault duology beforehand, Robotech: Battlecry was pure fun to my autistic childish mind.
Of course, now that I'm a young adult and I've gotten into older anime, I saw Super Dimension Fortress Macross (the show that Robotech adapts and draws lore from in later sagas) and its even better and possibly more famous western side sequel OVA, Macross Plus through unofficial means (9anime and Kissanime respectively), and even before that I bought the excellent High Grade YF-19 kit by Bandai (YF-19 being one of two lead craft/mechs from Plus). I'll happily watch Robotech and its adaptation, but when SDF Macross and Plus hit home video again down the road, I'll happily buy them.

I remember getting this for my Xbox and the flight controls were half-backwards with up being up and down being down, not something I'm used to when.dealing with these games.
I don't think there was a way to adjust the Y-axis so I made do, but it made flight missions a lot more difficult.
I love the cell-shaded look, but overall it's not exactly something I'd recommend to Macross/Robotech fans. Though it's playable enough, there's a difficulty rollercoaster you have to ride as some missions will be far more difficult than others. You also turn too slowly for how fast they intend for you to go.

The game actually did do a good job of emulating the shows style. The clips you shown were from the movie version, Macross: Do You Remember Love. Besides having a much higher budget, it retconed and redesigned many elements from the original. The SDF-1 in this game was modeled on tv version for example and the differences between them are as noticeable s the TV version of the original Enterprise from Star Trek TOS and the movie version (Check out the Macross Mecha Manuel to see the differences). But if you watch the original shows animation, it is really close to what the game did, at lest for what you could do on a cross platform 2002 game that had to run as well on the PS2 as on the beefier Gamecube and X-Box (OG TV macross aired like in 1980 or 81, so it was rough by modern standards but still amazing compared to shows of the time, especially some of the set pieces animations done by Hideaki Anno, yes THAT Hideaki Anno). Was it a perfect game? By no means but it did feel like I was playing the combat scenes from the show. But yeah, I would love a more thought out modern game.
Also not sure how you'd get white washing with the art style? While the cut scenes looked difference, that's because they were done by the main artist doing the Robotech artists at the time (though it would of been cool if they could of gotten the Waltrip bros, they were really good at emulating the shows art style). That and even in Macross, a lot of the characters were already western if not American and even the it is based on the US version. This would like being mad at the Japaneses version of Spiderman for making him Japaneses.
Now Invasion... yeah, that one just threw the whole style out of the window. I remember playing a demo and having the reaction you had to this game when I played it.

I remember it partly because it gave me an interest in weapons technology and science fiction, but also because of my dad.
Not that he was into the anime and introduced me to it, he had no idea it was a thing. No, it's because of the moment we found it. There was a demo station of some mecha vs kaiju fighting game in the Toys 'R Us that interested him, but he didn't know where to find the title of it and asked an employee. The employee, it seems, didn't know either and just handed him a copy of this. I remember when he read off the title to me, the first time I'd ever heard the word battlecry said, and how did he pronounce it in that public space, loud enough for anyone nearby with ears to hear?

While the game is not Great, it actually have several things going for it. The graphics captures the original visuals spot on, the music (being the music from the show) works wonders, the animations are quick and sharp, the gameplay, while simple, works well to capture the Robotech experience.
Its main faults are some Mission designs (Goddamn you Cat Scan!), some bossfights that were poorly implemented, and enemy ai.
But to be fair, all of them fall under the quality level of "Just Good Enough".

When I did this review, I wasn't really in a great headspace, and I feel as if I did neglect or be too harsh on some elements. I also had less of an idea of what to say then I do now. Animations with the player are good, but the enemies aren't great - they are static mostly and don't do much. Most of the points I mentioned were universal when it came to reviews at the time and of others, and maybe that was the biggest problem with this to me - I should have followed my own gut on what I thought. It's a broken game held back by system limitations, certainly. I don't like how it tried its best to remove anything 'Macross' from the scenario. But it wasn't totally bad.

Man I remember playing this game back in PS2. It wasn't great but it gave me a really unique mech game experience at the time (gameplay wise)
If you ever feel like playing a Robotech/Macross game I highly recommend trying out the SDF Macross PS2 (Japan only release though, it was released a year after Battlecry) or Macross Ultimate Frontiers (Or any Macross game by Artdink) for the PSP.
SDF Macross PS2 probably has the best control for a Macross/Robotech game, period. I'ts very fluid and responsive.
The game gives you a choice to follow either the story of the OG anime or the "Do you Remember Love?" movie.
I've only played it for 5-6 mission of the anime route and it was great! You don't need a lot of knowledge of the story or Japanese language. It's very straightforward.
It's a short game, but definitely worth to play.

Personally I found this game to be a blast with only one mission rubbing me the wrong way. An escort mission in space where you're protecting a AWACs of sort. Outside of that the game very much felt like an anime themed Rogue Squadron 64 but on the PS2 with a few extra features and I absolutely loved Rogue Squadron. Once you got the hang of exploiting different transformable modes fighting becomes very fast paced and that face pacedness is required a lot. Those "Crates" that kept killing you were pretty easy, and I never knew they even hurt the player, but I don't think I ever got that close to them to get hurt.
I would agree the game would have been better with more open world like maps. But we are talking about a relatively early PS2 titles. I mean GTA didn't become truly open world until GTA San Andreas years later on the same platform. You kind of get this though with The Super Dimension Fortress Macross 2003 from 2003 on the same platform. It's a very Clunky to play but more expansive game based off the same anime but a JP exclusive because well... no point getting into that mess of a discussion. Personally Battlecry plays a lot better, but The Super Dimension Fortress Macross definitely looks more like the anime, and has many battles in which you get far more freedom to move around. But it also has it's own issues. Like every time they lock onto you, you get very annoying alarms, and the UI is over saturated with nonsense. Basically a far less fun game to actually play in my opinion and I've only experienced it through emulation. I think though it's a good comparison to Battlecry though. Two different games made about the same franchise, made by totally different companies hired by totally different companies with totally different ideas on what a game on this anime should be. It's interesting how similar they are sometimes though.

PLEASE try playing the japanese Macross game that absolutely destroys this game entirely. It's a PS2 japan exclusive made by Sega AM2, but it is 100% playable without understanding japanese. I've only played this game a little and have never gotten past the second level. Then again, I didn't really try that hard either. It's not that I didn't like the game, I just had trouble getting used to the controls. When in plane mode, the controls all make sense, but when in battloid mode, I keep expecting the left stick to move forward/back and side to side, but it turns instead. You have to use the shoulder buttons to strafe. I wish it was the opposite. I'm using an emulator, so I CAN switch it, but that means that either I have to learn unintuitive plane controls, or switch the control config every time I change modes.
I've never seen Macros either. I think I'd prefer it over the Americanized version, although I have watched the original Japanese opening titles and I have to say that I much prefer the Robotech music over the downbeat song in the original.

    • @KeiNova
      @KeiNova  10 месяцев назад

I can only imagine that switching like that would be a new nightmare, especially when the game sometimes needs you to use multiple forms very quickly between areas within stages. The turning really is really slow and the control style switch was very confusing between transformations, I agree!
I have seen a little bit of Macross now, and its defiantly better strictly for that fact that it retains a lot of cut content that made it more mature and less of a kids show. I'm sure there are a lot of people that wouldn't agree though, since they grew up with the Robotech version.

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 10 месяцев назад

@@KeiNova It's too bad that PCSX2 (the PS2 emulator) doesn't have an option to switch control configs on the fly. At least the older version I have to use because of my old computer, doesn't have this. I'm so used to FPS controls were the movement controls are forward/back, left/right, that it messes me up when I'm in Battloid mode.
I also need to experiment with it more and get used to guardian mode, since that one can launch missiles, which are a one-shot kill. I get to the end of the second level, which is kind of like a survival wave and the onslaught of enemies eventually wear me down. I know that's probably nothing compared to what comes later, but I keep overheating my gun trying to take them out, and end up having to wait until it cools off while trying to avoid their fire.
You probably already know this, but there is a Japan exclusive Macross game for the PS2. I've only played it a little, but the structure seems quite a bit like this game. It starts with a plane level and then goes to a city level. Which is where I got my butt kicked. I really haven't played it enough to get used to the controls, but as with most Japanese mech games, I spend the bulk of my time turning, trying to get the enemy in front of me, while they literally run circles around me. It does have more detailed graphics than this game though.
There are also three Macross mech games on the PSP, which look quite nice. They're all untranslated Japanese exclusives though.

I'm halfway through and the most substantive critique of the game is that it doesn't look like the 1980s anime style of animation.
I think expecting a 2002 game to truly imitate a specific animation in a fluid and coherent way isn't really reasonable. The cell-shaded style is what was used at the time to provide a clean look despite the hardware limitations of the time. The alternative tended to be grainy, jagged and blurry.
The best critiques here are mostly that the missions are overly rigid, the invisible walls are unclear and too constricting and that the sniping/grab functionality there solely for very specific mission objectives.
