Finally a real review on this! I almost got it before my recent trip, but decided to pay 5x as much for an Aer Travel Pack. I had the budget to pay more but this looks like a great value and I’ve suggested it to friends already.

My 3 must have features to qualify as a "travel backpack" are:
    1. Hip belt - chest strap is simply not complete without a hip belt. Doesn't even have to be fully padded, a very thin strap will do the job.
    2. Elastic side compartment - for everything from large water bottles to outdoor gear. Not making this elastic is just form over function.
    3. Comfortable handles - like the top handle on this Tomtoc, unlike the side ones which seems like an afterthought.
Oversall looks good and the duffel opening is definitely the most interesting, but I prefer my Decathlon Escape 500 which offers all the above features at a lower price point.

I own the Escape 500, 24 L version. But I don't like the 32L version that much, it get's really fat imo. I also own a Travel 40L also from Decathlon, but you can easily fit 50L in it, and it's more a camping like backpack, wich I love for a multidestination travels and roadtrips, it has a lot of compartments but without packing cubes your tech can be on the loose. But I feel like I need something in between, so I am considering this tomtoc with the black friday discount

I have been looking for a bag to carry my laptop and CPAP machine together since TSA will check both without fail. Previously I had them in different places, laptop in my carry on luggage and CPAP in its own bag.
Thanks for your review which helped reinforce my own reasons for purchasing. The luggage handle pass thru is an awesome feature for how I travel. Also, I did find a small seatbelt covering for the unpadded side handle.

I'm considering a tomtoc 40L Travel Backpack but hesitating as it does not appear to come with the option of a hip belt. Can a hip belt made by another company (e.g. Aer) be adapted for use on this tomtoc bag? If not, do you have any other suggestions?

So looking at these bags now they do not have or show the top loading feature. I think I may opt out of these because everywhere I look (Amazon, BH, Google) this 40L bag no longer has a top loading feature or they don’t show it which from a marketing POV is bad.

I don't know if this is a good question for a travel backpack, but would this backpack be okay for everyday use? I'm in postgraduate degree and always carry a pencil case, a plastic pouch, a sketchbook (art studies) and a laptop with its hefty charger, I suppose if I tightened the straps it would be much less bulky and meet these needs. My main concern would be its durability, given its daily use and the Laptop protecrion, while also having a backpack for long travels like an all in one backpack.

That's interesting because I got a 20L bag from Tomtoc that would be the equivalent of the Aer Flight Pack configuration (also 20L) and it definitely fit way less than the Aer. To be honest, it seems like it barely packed out as much as my 14L Aer City Pack, so I guess these just pack smaller than the advertised weight. That being said, still seem like great bags that punch a bit above their price.
