  • Haydn's (1732 - 1809) reputation has long rested largely on his symphonies and string quartets, but it is now widely recognized that his piano sonatas are of comparable important. He composed over 60 sonatas during a period of roughly 35 years (c.1760-95).
Between 1774 and 1780, Haydn published three sets of six sonatas, which occupy a transitional place between his early 'Strurm und Drang' (Storm and Stress) sonatas and the Classical-style sonatas of 1783-85.
The second set was composed around 1774-76. It is the Moderato from the first movement of this sonata that is selected here, contains a number of lyrical moments contrasted with those of cascading sextuplets that generate a powerful climax in the central development.
