- County Cavan was hit hard by the great genocide which occured in the middle part of the nineteenth century in Ireland. In 1848, Irish landowners,(many under instruction from their English sponsors), evicted families from their homes to ensure they wouldn’t have to pay them or feed them, after the potato crop failure of the previous year. This song was based on the first hand accounts witnessed by a young Catholic priest, Dr. Thomas Nulty (Roman Catholic bishop for Meath), in his first year in the diocese, when the local landlord in Mountnugent evicted up to seven hundred tenants from their homes in a single day. The chorus in the song was added by the Irish ballad group ‘The Wolfe Tones’. I dedicate this track to my good friends from County Cavan. 🇮🇪
Shocking how our ancestors were treated. The same happened here in the Western Isles with the clearances. Breaks my heart when I was trying to explain to my four year old grandson the hardships of our ancestors.
Eamonn love it
Always thought nobody could sing this song as well as Tommy Byrne but this is a fabulous version. Well done!
What a beautiful rendition, has my heart broken 🇮🇪💚
Lovely version but absolutely nobody can sing this heartfelt song quite like Tommy Byrne of the Wolfetones 🎵🎵
Tommy Byrne is the man nobody can sing this ballad quite like him ☘️☘️
