  • Choosing the right variety of tomato is important. In this video I review the 3 most important factors when deciding which variety to plant. Those 3 factors are how much space you have, what you want to use the tomatoes for (eating fresh or making sauces/canning) and what is your growing zone. Enjoy the video, and your tomatoes!

Congratulations on your new home Tikki! 🎉
LOVE garden tomatoes so much I won't buy grocery store tomatoes.
Here's a weird tip for growing tomatoes. If you smoke cigarettes, don't touch your tomato plants without thoroughly washing your hands. Cigarettes contain fusarium and verticullum wilt which isn't killed in processing tobacco. It will cause your tomato plants to damp off and die.
Very useful info. I have a real soft spot for all the Brandywines. Thanks Tikki! Happy Growing!❤

Thanks for the tip Mary Rose! No one, including myself, smokes in our house, so no danger there. We just drink too much coffee! Thanks for the comment!

I'm sure you are excited for a new growing space, i hope it's warmer? I have a couple of multi-pocket plastic style grow bags, The only thing I need to do more is make sure the water is getting everywhere into the bags. I am having to move my growing indoors at the moment as I move into winter in the southern hemisphere. Your videos have inspired me to keep gardening even indoors! Hope you get some great fresh tomatoes!!

Thanks Toby Robb, I hope we get lots of fresh tomatoes as we go into summer...and you for your indoor garden as you go into the winter! We only moved about 5 miles from our previous location, 5 miles north, which in this hemisphere is colder, but 5 miles is not enough to make a difference. We have a lot of tall trees/woods surrounding the property, so the sun has to be high up in the sky for full sun, that is going to be the biggest challenge, finding a nice sunny spot for the tomato plants! Good luck to you and thanks for the comment!

When my wife and I bought this summer house, that I now live in (alone after my wife passed away seven years ago), in 1974, we started growing tomatoes from the very beginning. Now, of course, the original summer house has long ago been transformed into a big 300 sqm fully insulated (I'm at lat 57) family home but we kept on growing tomatoes every year. And we got lots of them, and we thought they tasted fantastic. But we compared them to fresh store-bought tomatoes, and we all (?) know how they are picked before being properly ripened.
Alas, then we got hold of The Real Thing: tomatoes from Italy. They came canned shortly after being properly sun-ripened, in the proper soil for tomatoes, and WOW, what a difference.
Before you decide to grow your own tomatoes, I suggest that you try a can of Italian tomatoes. Make sure that you trust the label. I've found that Mutti is reliable and affordable (here in Sweden).
Not trying to rain on your parade, I've loved your channel for years, just saying... 🥰

What an interesting comment, to try canned tomatoes from Italy! I had fresh tomatoes when we were in Florence a couple years ago and they were amazing. Thanks for the tip and sorry to hear about your wife passing. Glad to hear you have good memories!

This is the first year I'm growing the Oregon Springs. They sure do germinate well. I have A LOT of seedings lol We eat tomatoes 3 times a day during the summer. What we don't eat fresh, I dehydrate and then powder using the food processor. Then I just add enough water to the powder to make whatever I want. Everything from pizza and spaghetti sauce to tomato soup. I just vacuum seal the jars I have the powder in so it keeps a long time.I usually use determinate tomatoes in the containers on the back deck and the indeterminate ones out in the garden. And I do my best to get heirloom so I can save the seeds. They're getting expensive and hard to find by being sold out at retailers.Thank you for the video. Wonder what upside down plants do? lol

Thanks for the feedback on the Oregon Springs, its good information! I also dehydrate and save for the off season...great minds think alike! Good luck with your gardening this summer! I will be growing on the back deck as well this summer. The idea of the upside down planters is interesting. I'm going to plant both ways and see if there is any advantage or if its just a marketing gimmick. Or maybe a space saver? I don't know...meanwhile we are still in the 40's so I am waiting for warmer weather...eagerly....thanks for the comment Genevieve!

That's the best way to go, growing and nurturing the plants from seed to harvest! You are lucky! Its 40 degrees here this morning, so no frost, but still too cold for the tomato plants to go outside. Enjoy those tomatoes!
