I did not need a podcast to wake up, I needed Andrew Huberman to wake up and I strongly believe most organizations and doctors could also use some help from him to really learn the hidden and pernicious effects that alcohol has on human body and brain.. You see mate, this is the power of the Internet revolution where specific knowledge could be found if you know where to look.. But it won't mean much to you probably because you still live in the 80s world where you think doctors and organizations hold the key to certain answers while many of us use this revolution to enrich our lives to become better in every aspect of life. @@Rusty69-er

Honestly... I only see personal attacks and bruised egos.
When you see Andrew Huberman speaking live (see just released in Melbourne, AU), his dedication and selflessness in his teachings with rigorous vulgarising and sourcing, it's hard to discredit all of his work for some private stories.
Crafting hours of content at that pace and of that length and quality is a huge task, I don't have his team, but I already struggle to release a 20-minute video/week!
And the content is FREE! Yes, there are sponsors and levers to monetise, and the company must be making millions, but it is simply the law of digital scalability.
    The Huberman Lab transforms lives.
Ask people how were the greatest minds of this world to live with or be around, Males AND Females!
    People are not perfect- duh.
If he does or did anything against the law: Then seize the law.
If he does anything incorrect in the private sphere: Communicate in private, make up or cut the bridge.
If he is being scientifically inaccurate: Open a scientific dialogue and/or seize the relevant commission.
If you're jealous of his success: make yourself useful.

With respect, it’s challenging to disregard the inherent bias here, when your book is being promoted in the background and you’ve pinned a link to your Patreon. It may be dampening your message otherwise. I keep asking the question: why does any of this matter to folks who aren’t considering a relationship w/ him? Why is it so seemingly important for folks like you and NY Mag to take him down a peg (or, am I incorrect about that presumption)? Did people see Huberman as some sort of Christian ideal, and is all of this introducing cognitive dissonance against whatever puritanical ideals those folks have? I’m not personally seeing why any of these details matter when evaluating the quality of his output. As far as I’ve been able to parse, limited to no correlation is made between the flakiness in his personal life and any parallel egregiousness on his part in a professional context.
I am sorry that you were manipulated, and I certainly am not signing up to be friends w the guy. But I’d argue that Andrew’s communication and research has moved the world forward, and I’m not seeing why anything reported on has material public relevance - to the degree that’s worth discrediting his work as a researcher.
Consequently, it’s hard to move past perceiving the fiscal opportunity here as the primary motivation for any of this (or perhaps a personal revenge/justice need). I’m honestly not attacking your motivations here per se, over trying to understand them … as it’s probably very possible that I’m misunderstanding the intent, and/or that it’s lost on me altogether.

    • @sgcarney
      @sgcarney  6 месяцев назад +104

Is it strange for an author to put their books on display? Should authors tell no one about their work? What do you think authors do? AS for your question: do you think someone with bad character in three domains (friendship/sex/professionalism) would not have bad character or motivations in their public persona? Is it better for journalists to not tell you information about people they report on?

    • @8033y
      @8033y 6 месяцев назад +109

Thanks for the reply. No, it’s not strange at all! Which is why I was pausing to jump to that conclusion. My point was that I was personally failing to see the motivations otherwise (possibly ignorance on my part), in which case it may be difficult for me and others to ignore the *possible* fiscal bias inherent. And that this might be getting in the way of your actual intention here. Fwiw, I’m generally pro capitalism… mostly. But, yes, I would see something wrong with fiscal remuneration being the primary motivator for feeding a hit piece on him (not saying that’s the case here).
I realize I’m likely playing out some unreasonable fantasy of what I seek from journalists, but I do think clarity of motivations and purpose are important to promulgate clearly, especially in cases like these. Otherwise, it becomes too easy to dismiss as tabloid fodder - which I’m not saying this is necessarily, but in reading the comments it seems fair to say that several folks are either maligned to or misunderstanding your motivations.
As for whether correlation in some areas equals correlation in others, my opinion is: we have to be VERY careful of glib associative correlation in today’s climate, especially when the interwebs have effectively become a court of public opinion with its own power to indict w sizable implications. In this case - not just for Andrew, but for all of the folks who have gotten legit value from his content.
So, my “fantasy” is that journalists should bear the burden of making such correlations explicit vs implicit. That’s the journalism I want. If there is an issue there, I want more of a focus on the speciousness of his reasoning, or lapses /dubiousness in scientific rigor. NYMag did not successfully do this (unless I missed it), or at best they presented it as ancillary to the personal stuff. The salient thing on display here is his infidelity and flakiness. Maybe it’s just the world I’m coming from… but philandering, absent minded professors are not an Edvard-Munch-worthy anomaly in my experience. I’m not excusing the behavior, just questioning its news-worthiness to the general public.
Huberman can speak in ways that make complex subjects colloquial for us pleebs, often going for 3 hours straight as a one-direction, info dense monologue. But he does markedly less well when being interviewed by others. Should there be a correlation there? Just because he’s a bit on the spectrum when talking himself, does that mean his podcast is any less credible or authoritative? I’d say “no”.
Again, I’m not questioning your (or NYMs) credibility here - just struggling to understand the purpose and why it should matter to us.
P.S. For the record, I’m not an Huberman acolyte - just sensitive to our standards for these increasingly ubiquitous hit pieces, and our collective ability to hold people as the often contradictory multitudes we are. Babies mistaken for bath water are abound.

@@MeloniousThunk Yep yep. I’m not disputing the claims; personally speaking, I’d be really upset with him if any of those things happened to me. E.g. The knowing, undisclosed spread of HPV is certainly something to investigate further - and I’d encourage those folks to do so if there is a substantive/legit claim. But, in my admittedly limited PoV at least … those are matters that should ideally be worked out between the wronged and Andrew, or in a courtroom where appropriate. Arbitrating this via media channels, given the inevitable sensationalism+overreaction they tend to trigger, feels heavy handed and clumsy in this case to me… and, seemingly, more in the spirit of inciting outrage than correcting a problem per se.
Fwiw, I’m not an avid Huberman follower, but when I do listen to his podcast, I do so for the information… not because I’m considering a relationship w/ him.🤔🙂
It’s sorta the age old “hate the artist, love the art” thing.
Totally fair for you to disagree in any case; I do sympathize with why many people are morally offended. I’m mostly commenting on the role of the press/media in cases like this. Especially given potential conflict of interest inherent, it feels important to align on what we are collectively attempting to achieve; we should encourage our journalists to focus more on accurately outlining causal factors, what needs to be fixed and a plan for fixing it - and less on the symptomatic soap opera of it all to feed our insatiable needs for titillation and outrage in perpetuity (which, I’ll be the first to admit, I’m fully guilty of engaging in here! 😇)

I don't know him but I do know that people with the cluster of adhd, depression, and perfectionism can be non-responsive like that and it actually tears them up inside. When it results in a blown deadline panic sets in. It's hard for the person affected by this to have much empathy because it affects them negatively. From the outside it looks like indifference but it might be being catastrophically overwhelmed. Prideful adhd people don't know how to ask for help and basically can't fix the situations themselves. It can be confused with vindictiveness too.

Everything he said was in line with my direct experience of Wim, who purposely exposed people to dangerous dangerous situations and laughed at them if they didn't obey him. For example, while we were on a trip to Poland, one guy had injured his feet really badly jumping off a rock into icy water (Wim told him to do it). Wim then encouraged him to climb the icy mountain in shorts as is customary on these expeditions, even though he couldn't walk properly. No one suggested he get an x-ray even though they all celebrated him for ascending a mountain with apparent "broken heals". To me, Wim was a monster.
He had a lot of power over young men. for some reason.

Comparing Huberman to Bikram is a stretch. Bikram was a rapist and a serial assaulter, especially with women he had direct employment power over. The only allegations against Huberman are that he… hooked up with a lot of women and was unfaithful. These two things are not comparable

Sorry, I just don't get it. When I want information about brain science, I listen to Dr. Huberman. If I want information on how to improve my personal relationships, I will not be seeking information from Dr. Huberman. This seems like common sense. Most people have personal flaws. Why do people fail to have compassion for a person who happens to be a brain scientist who apparently has many personal flaws?

I can see both sides. However, if something is helping an individual take control of their own life(not others through manipulation), does the source ultimately matter?
Huberman may be his own defeatist and suffer in a horror he has created himself.

Another thing that bothers me a lot is that people and especially young men, follow him because he's the story of a troubled kid who turned out good, but his parents and school colleagues say he wasn't the bad kid he says he was.

I don't get this. I'm a man in my thirties, I listened to quite a few of his podcasts and found it useful. And I never heard about this whole spiel of him being a troubled kid etc. And to me, lying is a protective response. We do that sometimes out of pure habit, probably formed because we wanted to avoid facing, or avoid a perceived negative consequence of the other person knowing "the truth". I really don't get why you find this "very unsettling". To me, it feels like a normal, valid human reaction that is resulting from a lack of complete emotional safety with his therapist. And that doesn't mean he or the therapist is bad or disingenuous... emotional safety is built over time and patience and the right approaches to building it.

I think even if he were some private Joe Schmoe his behavior would still be reprehensible and disturbing. It's predatory and deliberately cruel. He has built up a kind of mythology about his background that seems even his parents don't recognize. He is a storyteller. Clearly, the man is lacking something deep inside himself. We only know because he is in the spotlight. If he were my neighbor I would never want to interact with him. Think about how it would be to know him personally -assuming this is all true (high index of probability). I would need to delouse after every interaction with him. If one really imagines the behavior, it's sickening.
