Lions are so numerous now that they wander into the surrounding villages at night to prey on cattle. The people still don’t kill them and surprisingly, even the lions leave the people alone. But some of these lions need to be shifted to other national parks across the country as the Gir sanctuary is now overpopulated with lions.

Yup. Most of Tanzania's land area is set aside for wildlife. This is major because lions require very large areas to roam comfortably without coming into contact with humans.
Of course, lions do kill about 80 people in Tanzania annually, but the numbers would likely be way higher if there weren't as many conservation areas in the country as there are now.

Actually the lions in India is known as Asiatic lion, it is genetically different species from african lion ; centuries ago the Asiatic lions were found in Asia's middle eastern countries including Iran to all across India but due to excessive hunting they all were extinct from those countries except few (approx 16) wild asiatic lion were left in India's Gujarat state in 1950s, from that time both local people and government's enormous efforts help to increase the asiatic lion population above 500. The CAR statistic is probably not true. The majority of the wildlife in that country (along with most of Africa) occur OUTSIDE of national parks. This statistic was likely based on an analysis done in one of the national parks.
CAR is a fairly-sized country, about the size of Texas, and has huge expanses of wilderness, which are mostly unexplored. Combine that with a small human population, there are probably way more lions than what we're currently aware of.

before rise of Rome southern and eastern Europe too were full of lions. E.g., it's well known. that in his youth Alexander Macedonian hunted lions at the foot of a certain mountain not far from his father's palace. However, the Romans came and took all lions, leopards and bears to Rome for gladiator fights. As a result, there were no lions left in Greece and Macedonia and very few in Minor Asia. They did the same with the Barbary lions, but they somehow survived until the middle of the 20th century.
