So one thing to note is that with the release of The Final Shape, two of the older DLC's (Shadow keep and Beyond Light) have had their story content made available to all free-to-play players. At this point it's fairly reasonable to consider them as part of the Base Campaign new players should go through.
And here I am planning on playing Destiny 1 from the beginning. I enjoyed the game when it came out but never finished it. Been working 6/7 days a week for a while but want to get back into gaming and figure I'll start with D1 and then try D2. I love the gameplay so that's a plus.
I started playing Destiny during Vanilla launch. Played for years and years up until D2. Life happens, got sucked into other games. Bought a PS5 two weeks ago, downloaded Final Shape a week ago and have been hooked ever since. I have days put into my original account. I’m so overwhelmed with all the content I missed over the years. It makes playing through the current campaign somewhat hard to navigate
I'd recommend looking at the timeline at the top right of your map. Scroll all the way to the left to start. Also, do the blue new light quests, then follow the guardian rank objectives.
Just wait untill you get your first 6 man lobby together to play your first raid! Its a whole another level of fun!! Keep up the grind my fellow gaurdians.
The only game that I’ve became as obsessed with as I have with Overwatch is Destiny 2. I started playing with the last shape and I’ve already got about 100 hours in videos alone to expand my knowledge, I’m scared to look at my playtime in just 2 months.

It's not a help a lot of the original content and expansions got put into the void where we can't go.
The New Light experience definitely needs to be improved but I'm glad you guys are enjoying the game!
