The father of a friend of mine back in high school told us that pickles were helpful between two- and three-a-day football practices before the start of the school year. It worked.
If the sell by date is listed, the best by date is approximately 7 days after that. And a best by date only indicates when a company thinks their product tastes best, not when it's actually gone bad. Best way to find out if something is by is to look at it, smell it, and give a little taste test.
I guess you could say the studies contribute to the overall "body of knowledge" in the world. However, I completely agree with you. If only one study is mentioned and the study has a low number of participants from a select population, then I would definitely not consider the findings as applicable to every person in the same situation.
I think the point is more to test the hypothesis despite the sample size. Once out in the open other scientists can test the hypothesis as well with bigger sample sizes and in different degrees.
***** Experts are just as likely to fall into the pits of "common knowledge" and "everyone in the field knows that". Studies done to (dis)prove old possibly outdated results gets mocked incessantly even though that's how science works.
I love Lifeway Kefir. It has over 12 different live cultures and there are ridiculous amounts of flavors. Delicious. And it's drinkable! No spoons necessary!
It's in renate to separate curds and way, and part of the setting out process to make cream. Untill milk is pasteurized it can all be considered to have microbiome
Now, I can eat radishes by themselves so the thought of eating them dipped in ranch dressing is tempting me to no end. Come the springtime, I'll join you in eating radishes dipped in ranch!
“Which raises the possibility that our intellectual capacity is ultimately defined at least in part not by us but by the microbes colonizing us.” Wow, John. You really did bare all with Turtles all the way down.
Tillamook. Tillamook is the answer for everything. They have the best Cheese, Yogurt, Ice Cream, Butter. I don't know if it's available everywhere, but up here in the PNW it's pretty common. Although the further away you get from Tillamook, Or. the more expensive the brand gets.
About a year ago, a scientific study found that -- contrary to assumption -- there were not 10 times as many bacteria cells in the human body as human cells, but that the ratio is more like 1.3:1 in favor of the microbes. John is still right to be suspicious though, and I recommend that important bodily decisions not be made by popular vote.
My mom worked in a lab in college in the 80s researching food preferences, etc. For one of the trials they brought kids in to taste tofu. I don't know why. The tofu was presented in little cups with the tiny spoons you get to sample ice cream with. So you can imagine the young child coming in, excitedly sitting down and putting a heaping spoonful of unflavored tofu in his mouth. My mom, working with said child, watched his face contort and spit out the food, saying to her, "Have you tasted this stuff??!?!"
The researcher did have some interesting findings, though. If I remember correctly, they did an experiment with kids eating corn and green beans, plus controls. Then they would put the corn kids at the green bean table and vice versa, etc. a few weeks later and they mostly stuck with what they had eaten before--we stay with the familiar rather than conforming to peers' preferences in food choices. Or at least that's what I took away from my memory of my mom's memory of a single study that took place thirty years ago.
Here in Greece we have a variety of "live" yogurt to choose from. Recently, when we were in the US we bought some "Greek Yogurt" and I'm here to tell you that, regardless of the label, it AIN'T GREEK YOGURT.
Re: pickle juice: ancient Romans used a vinegar-like drink to rehydrate (because wine goes sour and the acidity helps keep bugs out of water skins), so they were on to something...
I think I found a small grammatical error. Number 20 says "A fine dining atmosphere led tonger meals but eating less." I believe it meant to say "to longer" not "tonger". 😀
I like my (probiotic) yogurt plain and out of a fairly large plastic or glass jar. The brand doesn't matter much, and I choose wither non-fat yogurt or whole fat yogurt, depending on how I intend to eat it.
5:15 I'd chug that shit. Whenever I snack on the jar of pickles, I always drink the brine. I think there's something wrong with me, but I really don't care.
Bananas, lettuce and pinto beans. The only healthy foods. No need to check the per portion pricing of any other foods. (This message brought to you by the banana-lettuce-pinto bean conglomerate).
as you said that healthy food is cheaper by portion than unhealthy food it might well be by portion but if you look at it by mass I doubt the numbers would match sinc e 1 serving of chocolate is normally something lik 25g but when it comes to like fruit and veg its normally a lot higher
not all products go bad, many just be come less tasty. as a studen I did a couple of times drink that was over a month past the sell by date, but that I had not opened until that time. now that I think about it, I know of multiple products that has dates on them for how long they last as unopened and opened .
I need a John Green life hack video in approximately 10 days to make make me feel better because it's too cold for ice cream plus it makes my cramps worse. Please make it happen.
Regarding #23, I feel that a vast majority of dates listed on shelf-stable products are to help ensure the manufacture that the retailer will have a predictable and constant turnover even if there are little to no sales of the product (i.e. the shelves will keep getting stocked because things are going out of code). And in general, dates are more or less a set of guidelines, not rigid standards. If food really has gone bad, it'll be obvious, and you won't need some obligatory date to tell you to toss your food. It's the benchmark I use.
Does Greek yogurt count? I've never liked regular yogurt, but I like all greek yogurt. Even store brand. I guess Oikos would probably be my fave brand, just due to the variety and frequent new (albeit limited edition) flavours.
Cabot Vanilla greek yogurt (assuming "probiotic" includes all yogurt with live cultures) is my favorite although I found out recently that it was "fake greek yorugt :("
I don't know how the study actually was, but I feel like yeah, of course bare minimum stuff like bananas and beans will be cheaper than already finished products like fries, pizza, etc. You need more than just that one ingredient and water to make something taste good...
Since non-dairy yoghurt is still made with probiotic bacteria, it's more likely fake yoghurt is yoghurt without living probiotic bacteria. Pasteurized after fermentation?
That last fact was quite interesting! I think you should make an entire episode on "shocking expirements that would never happen now a days".
Number 20 "A fine dining atmosphere led TONGER meals but eating less"
im assuming thats their version of the adjective for tonga. chinese food, indian food, tonger food :)
I'm like 75% sure teydid that on purpose.
Garrsus ahh beat me to it

as a student at BYU, John is probably right about the attitude on pickle juice after electric shocks
Why are studies consisting of so few test subjects with results anything less than absolute given merit?
Nightenstaff Was thinking the same thing. A study of 10 people is by no means a proven study.
10 people willing and able to bike until near exhaustion is a pretty darn select group.
I guess you could say the studies contribute to the overall "body of knowledge" in the world. However, I completely agree with you. Nice to see you back John.
This was a great video John (an anyone else who worked on this), more entertaining than I expected it to be.
That toast butter study is amazing
Mythbusters busted that one a while back.
I love Lifeway Kefir. It has over 12 different live cultures and there are ridiculous amounts of flavors. Delicious. And it's drinkable! No spoons necessary!
"The microbes colonizing us" .... I am dead xD
Anytime I hear "Activia", I think of the TV show, Community, "Brought to you by the yogurt Jamie Lee Curtis uses to poop!"
I could've sworn #3 was about a depletion of eggo waffles. I was concerned.
Microbes are in charge for sure.
Yokult! Whatever those little Korean bottles are that have been around for decades.
"did you threaten them with radishes?" great script as always.
Writing and delivery of jokes is on point, great job guysshh
Sure, post this right before lunch...
(UK Translation) Sure, post this right before afternoon tea..
We have lunch too mate. Afternoon tea comes after.
Indeed. Glad I have some apple cake lying around. Om nom nom.
(Pacific Time Zone translation) Sure, post this at first morning coffee break...
+Jonathan Gibson: and this video was posted at 4pm (GMT). Hence, right before afternoon tea.
Scishow did a video on #3 being disproven.
Yogurt always tastes like it's gone bad to me.
It's all the bacteria.
well it is basically spoiled milk so yeah
Kaweta yer, but so is cheese and ice cream
It's in renate to separate curds and way, and part of the setting out process to make cream. Untill milk is pasteurized it can all be considered to have microbiome
No, cream is what's on top of milk, it's not spoiled.
Radishes rock, tho! Especially with some ranch mmm now that its spring, I needa get my salad on!
Now, I can eat radishes by themselves so the thought of eating them dipped in ranch dressing is tempting me to no end. Come the springtime, I'll join you in eating radishes dipped in ranch!
I want to have one of those "tonger meals" (#20).
Good episode, thank you!!
Bananas are chom choms.

I actually really care for chicken nuggets when I was a kid. I did however love drumsticks, I was crazy for them.

LOL. I skip the yoghurt and go straight for a probiotic capsule daily.
haha I was litterally eating light & fit greek crunch yogurt while watching this
I love the peach activia
now I need to eat a fried donut burger
Studies have taught me that I have the instincts to eat healthy and I am leaning towards that.
mundotaku donut burger? ew wtf
Greek yogurt with honey is hands down the best yogurt.
Great video senor Verde.

Am I the only one who sees the connection between the fact at 10:26 and "Turtles All the Way Down"?
6:30 Fresh food is less expensive than processed and packaged food!? no way!
By recommended portion size not by caloric value. So it's a very biased synopsis.
Gumaro R. Villamil like an apple is 50 cents or less but a candy bar is a dollar.
Fried doughnut burgers!!! where do I get one of these magical creations?
50 seconds in...hungry for toast. lol

#20 ... tonger?
Does anyone know what that pink/white plush ( @ 9:20 ) is called and possibly where to buy one?????
Huh, I'd actually heard of the radish/ego depletion study before. No idea when/where.
Excuse me? I now need a fried doughnut burger. Thanks a lot
I think I found a small grammatical error. Number 20 says "A fine dining atmosphere led tonger meals but eating less." I believe it meant to say "to longer" not "tonger". 😀
Skyr is my favorite. High fat high protein low sugar.
I like the HEB store brand because it is cheaper than the name brand.
I saw a shirt that said, "Pizza" and had a picture of some moustachioed dude on it. Now I'm eating pizza.
and now i want fried donut burgers... thanks :(
I thought he was gonna say the ones that ate radishes did better. Lol
grazie
My favorite yogurt is Noosa
my toast always lands butter side up
Does the pickle juice also work for menstrual cramps?? Serious question. I would think so right...
Now I want a fried doughnut burger.
A toast to that.
How does nothing taste and how did they know it was on the plate? 🤣

Pickle juice is great, BTW - I see it as a source of electrolytes.
bedankt
9:08 then maybe they need to make a separate date on the item that shows how long you got until the products actually goes bad.
not all products go bad, many just be come less tasty.

I don't eat dairy but I love kimchi.
The price difference in healthy fed vs processed foods didn’t account for food waste caused by spoiling did it?
Lots of tiny studies. Don't depend on these to be correct.
Where can I find the citations of these facts?
Спасибо

How do soup bowls refill themselves?

Cabot Vanilla greek yogurt (assuming "probiotic" includes all yogurt with live cultures) is my favorite although I found out recently that it was "fake greek yorugt :("
My Greek friend said that sour cream is essentially Greek Yogurt.
"The microbes colonizing us . . . " the midichlorians?
mine is Activia as well, vanilla. But I quit eating it because of the amount of sugar in it.
yeah yea´h, very interesting John. Now tell me where I can find a fried donut burger!
Is your profile Jack O'Neill?
Bananas lettuce and pinto beans yeah those are the only fruits and vegetables I need
Typo in Fact #20: "led tonger meals" instead of "led to longer meals"
can someone explain to me how you control #5 ? like, whose to say those kids weren't already a little socially aggressive.
Where can I buy exspearmints?
All this talk about food makes me want to eat.
Of course something with vegetables is tastier. Because it IS tastier.
Did you bring turkish subtitles
eck-speer-a-mints
And now I want dinner.
Activia is pretty good. Kiefer is ... interesting.
8:30 "Turtles all the way down" much
Now I want toast....
Eating salt also decreases food suckiness.
I don't know how the study actually was, but I feel like yeah, of course bare minimum stuff like bananas and beans will be cheaper than already finished products like fries, pizza, etc. You need more than just that one ingredient and water to make something taste good...
7:50 "tonger"
Wait...where do I get a fried doughnut burger?!? 🍩 🍔
dear god i wish my wife would understand #23! >.
Right there with you.
lead tonger meals
My home made yogurt is the best. First I sing Rigoletto to sour the milk, then I keep it warm between my butt cheeks for 24 hours. Yummy!
Nice
What the hell is "fake yoghurt"?
I'm not sure what they used in the study, but it might have been a non-dairy yogurt. I eat one that's made of almonds.
Since non-dairy yoghurt is still made with probiotic bacteria, it's more likely fake yoghurt is yoghurt without living probiotic bacteria. Pasteurized after fermentation?
It's weird because Ego Depletion is actually a valid field in psychology, at least nowadays.
