- In this video, I share my experience with recording bass to a tape machine in Hamburg Germany. This video features the band Roofman recording at Clouds Hill Studios. I talk about my experience as a bass player in the studio, and explore weird bass sounds and pedals.
Roofman's album will be released 2022.

Great video Philip! I like the B:ASSMASTER from Maleko and also the Fuzz Moo from Moen on bass
Awesome! Thanks for you input ⚡️
Loved this video! So cool to see the whole process, and loved your sound! Can't wait to hear the album 🙂
Thanks Nancy! Stay tuned; I think it’s going to be really good; so proud to be a part of it. Thanks for watching! ☺️
Very cool! You are getting good at this while maintaining and perfecting YOUR style of videos. So many try to do what everyone else does. Usually not as well as the next guy... But you are one of those rare people that aren't afraid to do you. It's working, keep it up
Thanks Jim! That’s really encouraging. Thanks for being here and taking the time to listen! ⚡️
Another great video. Really appreciate your approach on tone, the reason the pedals really work for you is because your fundamental tone is so good.
Aw shucks. Thanks Dean! Thanks for watching l ⚡️
What a great video! I really hope you can share more experiences like this one! 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks so much! Glad to have you here.
Another great video, Philip! The Mustang sounds killer. I love that you’re open to the suggestions that other creative people might have, that’s something I need to keep in mind as a band leader. Hope your thanksgiving is quiet and peaceful, man.
Thanks Conor! Something I have to remind myself too. Thanks for being here, and enjoy your holidays! ⚡️
Really intriguing video- thanks Philip! Love the Mustang sound- great to see you exploring that.
Thanks so much! Thank you for taking the time to watch/listen ⚡️
As always great cinnamon topography Phil. Also really digging the glasses. Thanks for bringing us along,
😂 Thanks Shayne! Thanks for coming along!
Having this channel recommended in my feed has restored my faith in the RUclips algorithm. Love your style, can't wait to hear this album.
Hi Colin! So glad to have you here! ⚡️
Very excited to hear the final mixes!
Me too! I am really proud to be a part of this record. Thanks for watching as always ⚡️
This was awesome man! I was hoping you’d post this when I saw you recording in Germany with Rhett on your Instagram. Subscribed & excited for more!
Thanks so much! Glad to have you here ⚡️
Really enjoyed this. I like the idea of getting the tones right going in. Although I’ve recorded digitally for years, I always try to do as little in the box as possible. A little compression, maybe some EQ and then reverb on vocals and drums as needed, but I always aim to get it sounding as good as possible going in. I think that philosophy is having a bit of a resurgence in the last few years.
Thanks for sharing! Yes, I think it will come back around. It’s just an overall better experience IMO. ⚡️
Thanks for let us experience this Phil!
Thanks for coming along Victor!
Wonderful. Thanks.
Thank you!!
Sending love to both Philip and Roofman 🧡
🖤⚡️
Awesome video! Great to have a bass players perspective shining a light on a studio session!
Favorite fuzz on bass- ehx Russian muff, handles lower frequencies well, sounds dirty but smooth:)
Thanks Spencer! Thanks for your insight ⚡️
Stupid youtube algorithm. I just now got to see this. I'm glad you got the experience to head over there and play with that crew. On the question of effects, my general loop is small (tuner => compressor => Preamp/distortion). However, I have a number of things I play around with and enjoy using (notably a B9 Organ Synth--used for Doors songs generally, a POG NANO, a Fuzz pedal, and a Chorus pedal).
If you don't watch out, though, Rhett's going to be taking you to ADM, pulling pedals from the case, and making you sit in the bass room and try them out. ;-)
Sounds like I’d like your setup! And yeah, that sounds like a good time; ADM is awesome!
@@philipconradmusic It is and they have a solid supply of pedals. I keep looking at synth pedals when I'm there in between just trying out what they have on the wall in the bass room.
You really make me want to start back on my RUclips channel. I'm in south Georgia, bout 3 hours south of Atlanta. Keep em coming brother
Thanks Jason! Glad to have you here. Good luck with the channel!
Dude! You guys are at Cloud Hills!? Had no idea. One of my fav artists (Omar Rodriguez-Lopez) does a bunch of recording there & i believe works with Johann regularly. Super jealous. Would love to see more about the studio itself honestly. Have fun🤘
Johann is amazing! Stay tuned to Rhett’s channel; I know he has a video more a
about Clouds Hill coming soon…
This is amazing.
🙏🏻
Sorry, I didn't had time to listen to it before but man WHAT AN AMAZING VIDEO!!! Your bass sound is insane and the vlog is on point... About the Fuzz pedal, I use the MXR bass fuzz deluxe and I like it pretty much... Continue the good work!!!
Hi Benjamin! Thanks for watching as always! Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you are well!
EHX Bass Big Muff was one of my favorites. Works great with different genres
Came here to say this! Philip doesn't strike me as a big fuzz guy, but this pedal works wonders for me with adding both just a little bit of fuzz or also completely change the tone
Awesome! Thanks for the suggestion!
Love that Spring Reverb trick. Christopher Taylor from Grizzly Bear does that to great effect too.
Yeah it’s such a cool sound! I’d seen some people do it recently and had been itching to give it a try on the right song.
Loved your idea of bringing "pre-loved" strings with you, instead of bringing/using new ones...makes perfect sense...
Thanks! I hope you find it helpful. Thanks for watching as always!
Came from Rhett's channel. Nice video!
Thanks Luke!
cool vibe
🙏🏻
For fuzz look at Death by audio. You will love them on bass!
Thanks for the suggestion Isaac!
Awesome vid! I tend to enjoy Big Muff style fuzz on bass. I do know though, Malekko did a fuzz called the Diabolik with JMJ, so maybe it would pair well with your Mustang!
Oh cool, will have to check it out!
9:38 For a moment, there, I thought Teller was sitting there chilling in the control room…
Seriously, though, congrats. And thanks for this glimpse into your creative trip with your talented friends. Recording live and all analog is one of the best experiences of my life, and your video makes me itch to do it again.
I thought it was Bill Frisell.
Wow, totally.
Thanks so much for coming along the adventure! Glad to have you here and thanks for the kind words! ⚡️
After diving into fuzz pedals with some degree of depth, for bass the one that was the most full fidelity without going haywire wolfing all over was ironically the Nobels ODR-1. I know, Not a fuzz pedal, however the overdrive gives it the right amount of grit and saturation without loosing fidelity or altering the basic tone of the bass while maintaining the low end frequencies that distinguish it as a bass. My 2c. Thanks for shooting the video and sharing.
Thanks for this idea, much appreciated! ⚡️
Awesome vid man!
And what rhett said… UR BECOMING AN FX BOY!🤣
Hahahaha I know! Thanks for watching! ⚡️
Just came here to see how the "phone taped to the luggage" shot turned out (from Rhett's video lol), stayed for the amazing, insightful content! You should have wayyyy more subscribers than this, what the actual frick?
Elton, thanks so much for watching this video and the kind word. Glad to have you here!
Damn, that studio...wow...
Yeah dude… crazy!
Get an old Sovtek Muff (V7 or V8) and a Fender Blender, sounds amazing on bass guitar. Nice video!
Excellent! Thanks for your input ⚡️
the alpha omega/omicron by dark glass is hands down the best fuzz pedal for bass I've encountered so far - I found having a blend control on a fuzz for bass super useful!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
yessssss just yes
🙏🏻
I love my Warm Audio Foxy Tone Box on bass. Usually without the octaver
Excellent. Thanks for the suggestion!
Those Ampeg flip top amps are amazing. Not just for Bass, good for Guitars and keyboard too.
I had the pleasure of using one on a session recently and it was so good. I've never loved my bass tone more.
@@ampthebassplayer Ampeg reissued the B-15 in the late 90/early 2000’s. If you can find one its worth the investment.
Agreed! Love my flip top. Such a great sound ⚡️
I started off playing bass before I found out I was better at guitar, or at least my playing style was more akin to a rhythm guitarist than a bassist, but effects I like are fuzz (specifically the sound of the Maestro because of Paul McCartney on “Think For Yourself”), chorus and synth sounds so I could get a non traditional bass sound without having to switch instruments.
Great insight! Thanks for sharing!
You asked about fuzz. I would say get the Catlinbread SFT. If you run it in stoner mode you get a really fat saturated fuzz sound and you get a treble and bass control. I LOVE mine!
GOOD Gosh Phil. Rhett IS Ur Pedals ! Ol West
🤘
Searched for this after watching Rhett’s vlog yesterday….brilliant
Thanks for taking the time to search out and watch this video. So glad to have you a part of this channel! ⚡️
@@philipconradmusic I love your’s and Rhett’s honesty. I can’t believe how far you have come in terms of subs since the video, awesome 🤘🏻
I think for bass fuzz you can't beat the old brassmaster. But they are expensive and hard to find. Malekko makes the B:ASSMASTER which is super dope and a little more readily available but its a 200-300 dollar pedal. I personally enjoy Fuzz Face sounds on bass but big muffs are also cool
Awesome! Thanks for your input 🤘
I think I would try the Chase Bliss Benson Automatone Preamp. You can really eq your fuzz sounds on it...Cheers!
Excellent! Thanks for your input ⚡️
I've not tried it yet, but I would love to try a BC108 fuzz face through my jazz bass
Sounds like a good time…
The two fuzzes that I like the most are the Swollen Pickle and the JHS Muffuletta. The Pickle is more synthy and the JHS is more traditional, so I use both, but they're definitely worth checking out.
Awesome! Thanks for you input.
🔥
❤️
You asked that which fuzz sounds good on bass? In my opinion it is the pharoh fuzz from blackarts tone works. Nice vintage type fuzz!
Thanks for sharing!
Adventure audio has a cool fuzz for bass keeps the low end
Awesome! Thanks for your input ⚡️
I like the old ampeg scrambler for fuzz.
While not really a fuzz the DOD boneshaker is awesome in bass.
Nice! I’ll have to check it out!
Favorite fuzz on bass is devi ever wolf
Nice ⚡️
I have more fun recording bass than any other instrument : )
It’s so fun!
this might be a dumb question, but, are your pedals going into the di box, then the thru out going into the amp and the xlr out going into the board?
That’s a great question. Yes. Although sometimes I have the pedals after the di so we have a clean signal and a effected amp signal.
@@philipconradmusic thanks! Do you find the drives sound harsh when they go through the di to the board?
They can, but it’s usually blended together. And in a mix it’s not harsh usually.
@@philipconradmusic ok cool! Thanks for your time. I’m a guitarist playing bass in a cover band. So I’m trying to figure out the best live setup. My guitar player brain is still on and wants to use drive pedals. Lol. It sounds good at rehearsal but I’m not sure how it’ll sound coming out of the amp di.
Nice! Don’t be afraid to get dirty on bass. It’s a vibe and it cuts in the mix. Just don’t lose too much low end. Have fun!
Save yourself a bunch of time and money wasted and go directly for a vintage "green Russian" Sovtek Big Muff (preferably if you can try several and pick a winner) and you must pair it with something like a One Control Mosquito Blender which will work as a true bypass switcher (so the old muff doesn't suck your bypass tone) _and_ a clean blend to mix your dry signal back in if and/or when needed. You're welcome in advance.
Thanks for your input! ⚡️
The old school way? Hmm. You mean the right way. 😄
🤘🤘🤘
Rhett Shull!
Yes sir!
tape.
germany.
holland. what more you want??
Right?? Thanks dude! 🤘
Fuzz recs: Jext Telez Canyon Climber, Russian Big Muff.
Thanks so much for you input!
Try buying an Ibanez Seventh Heaven
I’ll check it out!
This is the only guy with a bass guitar channel, that can't actually play bass lol!! He's a bass enthusiast. He some knowledge about the technical aspect, but definitely not a musician.
