Awesome! I am definitely planting a little late as I did it today and I am in zone 7a, Oroville WA. it snowed today but the first real frost hasn't hit yet but will this week. sooo little late but eh It's my first time so gotta start some where! I highly encourage people to check it out sometime! It is a LOT of fun. Very hippy but FUN. haha. It's practically a black market as far as what is for sale there but it is wholesome, family friendly and fun.
Great video. I was confused at the zones until you mentioned that you live in BC. In the US, zone 9 temperatures here rarely fall below freezing. My zone 6 is almost the same as your zone 9. Thanks for the tips! Much appreciated.
Thanks Sista! Yes, definitely best to look up your specific zone for planting dates. Really, it all hinges on those frost dates...they tell us everything! 🙂
@@TheRipeTomatoFarmsThe purpose of "1st/last" frost is misleading, or worse yet misinterpreted, too often. Most seed is labelled for what zones a particular plant will grow best. Good rule of thumb. 1st, it's an average, and can vary as much as 3+ weeks either way. 2nd, it's the soil temp that matters more. Great video, Jeff. I planted my garlic about a week ago, as well as my walking onions. I did find out that finding the starts can be the biggest challenge.
Thank you. That was so informative. Do you plant the cloves that have no papery cover on one side. Sometimes when I split my cloves, one side gets all the cover and the other clove is naked.
Excellent video. I love garlic, and I love planting them, too. I have our own garlics from harvest in June, and I try to sprout before planting and nothing show. I sprout supermarkets garlic and sprouts right away. Why?? Can you have an idea??
Yes, all garlic will sprout right away with heat and moisture. The trick for hardneck is to actually get it NOT to sprout, as winter is just around the corner. Its why we plant it so late in the year and so close to the cold season.
Question? Can we talk about the price of seed garlic? It’s rather insane. I can buy whole bulbs of organic garlic at my farmers market for $1.00. It’s more economical to support a local farmer. Of coarse the fun of growing .. and the varieties are sacrificed. But the garden space is available .. no fretting about potential loss.. which I’ve had all 3 years growing. Between strawberries and garlic.. can’t get them thru the winter. I’m in 5b, so everything says I should be able to. I’ve done the math in my head and it just seems more economical for me to support local. All that said.. I have a few dozen large cloves I’m going to plant .. from my organic farmer; you are the teacher, so I’m here to nurture these cloves along this winter, and maybe I’ll be convinced to purchase seed garlic again next year 😊
1000% Ruth. I took a look at FOUR different places this past september and the prices were out of this world. $9 per bulb in some cases. With hardnecks only having 4-6 cloves per bulb, that's $2/clove! No thanks. Definitely just buy local...plus you KNOW the variety grows well in your area if it has actually made it to market. 🙂
I love your videos! I am in Utah, so our garlic timing is almost the same. I have been mulching with grass clippings. The question I have is: can the straw mulch be mixed to the soil and will it decompose?
Hi. Joe from Missouri. Last year I planted some garlic I believe it was the middle of October. But I believe the squirrels ate them. Beside it was still in the 60’s. Can you plant them later like November? Hopefully the squirrels will be in hibernation mode
Almost that time in Wisconsin again just waiting for next week to plant before the first freeze. Last year sadly raccoons of all things dug up all my bulbs in the beds and they didn't make it. Some of the extra bulbs I had and planted in random packs of dirt around the house grew though! Tinier though but just as zesty.
Hello Love your videos. I live in southern Ontario , long time gardner first time planting garlic. One question generally this time of year I clean and turn my beds and cover with black plastic to prevent early spring weeds. Is it okay to cover the garlic beds with plastic of just the straw will do?
Do you soak your garlic first ? We’ve seen baking Soda, blood meal, fish emulsion and liquid seaweed are used. Do you think it’s too cold to plant garlic in big pots in Edmonton Alberta?🇨🇦 Subbed 👍✨☕️☕️☕️✨🐝✨✨✨
Hey, thanks for the support! No, you don't need to soak the cloves.... Unnecessary step that's out there just for the RUclips views! Total waste of time. Plant 3" deep in moist, rich soil, layer on 2" if mulch and protect from extreme exposure by putting the pots next to each other and up near a structure. Cheers!
You can never have enough garlic. Last year I grew 3.7kg of garlic, which is nearly depleted now. When a recipe requires 2 cloves, I just add 2 bulbs 😏
Oh no! Live in Southern Alberta, Zone 4b - just planted my seed garlic today! Am I too late??? It's been so warm I didn't want to plant too early, temp dropping to -5 overnight in a couple of days. In raised bed, lots of mulch.
I just planted mine today 5b. Also worried I am late, 2 nights ago we had minus 2. I think as long as the ground is workable we are OK. Mine is also in a raised canoe bed with lots of straw and mulched leaves on top of the straw. If worried like I am I plan to add more mulched leaves once my hubby does the lawn. Good luck fellow Canadian Gardener. 😊
Yes, definitely the right time! For manure, you can, but don't go overboard. I don't fertilize my garlic until spring as it is just going to lie dormant for the next 5 months. But amending the garden at the end of the year and letting it slow-release over winter is never a bad idea. 🙂
silly me planted garlic this spring with predictable results... or should i say the lack of them. i've ordered seed garlic and look forward to a fresh start this fall. thank you.
You know what Joe....it is. the same 6" (15cm) can be used for between the rows that's used WITHIN the rows....unless you are growing on a plot where you need to get in between the plants.
What's your weather doing? What's the soil temps? Remember, planting dates are always a guideline. Local micro climates and yearly patterns change. If you ground isn't frozen and with the right hardneck variety, you can most certainly still plant now. Just mulch THICK.
Hi Vicky, great question.... I actually do not. If you notice at the start of the video, I'm planting in basically a monsoon. The is zero need to add more water to the situation than what I normally get at that time of year. However, where you grow, may be completely different.
Hey samurai, when I plant my garlic, its on the cusp of the rainy fall/winter seasons. Zero need to water for like 5 months. Where you live may be different and most definitely garlic should be moist from the time its planted to about 2 weeks before harvest.
