As part of a new study published by the Ecological Society of America’s journal, scientists have released drone footage confirming that orca whales do hunt and kill great white sharks. The video, which was recorded on May 16, shows a pod of killer whales chasing a great white shark - a fellow apex predator - during an hour-log hunt near Mossel Bay, on the Southern Cape of South Africa.
There are five orcas in the pod. They collaborated in pursuit of the shark, who tried to swim in tight circles to dodge the whales. Eventually, the great white shark was mauled and presumably eaten by the orcas. In their report, the scientists claimed three other great white sharks may have also been killed during the hunt.
Scientists claimed the unprecedented drone footage has provided insight into how orcas pursue, capture and incapacitate large prey like sharks. The evasive tactics of the great white shark have also been studied. There is not a known reason as to why the orcas attacked the shark.
The research team is now attempting to determine if “cultural transmission,” or the ability to learn and share information with one another, is occurring between the whales.

They are THE apex predator of the ocean. Isn't it strange that we put them in swimming pools to act like circus performers for the public, then wonder why they kill trainers. They're too big and smart for this kind of treatment.
Apex predator of sea world as well.
@@stevenroberts614 evolution has left the chat* A whale cant be a fish😂😂😂
Perfect comment you’re exactly right!!
It’s as if we’re the monkey and the whale is watching the show.
no megalodon is
I assumed this is common knowledge, Orcas being the apex, hunt the biggest sharks, heaviest whales, and meanest seals. Hunting in a pod also seals the deal.
Is it me or does the above comment rhyme?
@@miketurbo7580 😂
Its trippy. I feel like I am on acid.
Lmao, honestly didn’t see the rhymes.
Then you assumed wrong, and by extension were wrong lol
I always knew orcas will get more recognition as the rulers of the ocean...
They were ignored for centuries as leaders because of their skin color!
@@KeyserSozex bruh
@@DaWootzi 🤷🏽♂️
@@KeyserSozex Real talk. Orcas stepping up putting things right.
Megaladon would like to know your location
I've read articles where orcas are the best ambush hunters in the sea. A few of the pod will seperate and go sing to make alot of noise to get the shark to be like "ok they are over there" and then BAM a large male will ram the prey like a train hitting a car. Some of the impact his are so hard they "liquefy" the insides of these sharks. That's crazy force.
No rules to the ocean gang
Killer whales are smart , hunt in packs. A white shark don’t stand a chance with 3 or more of them . They have to eat too.
They don't stand a chance with 1
Shark don't stand a chance against 1 orca
They eat the soft internal organs
Not even with one full grown Orca. The Orca’s supreme intelligence gives it the upper hand as well.
@@Francis-qf2hr it depends on what shark, if just 1 orca encountered a great white shark that is larger enough in size, it would be suicide to take on the great white.
The lack of skills from the drone pilot is CRIMINAL!!
I’m not sure I’ve ever heard or seen an orca dead from anything other than captivity. These animals are among the most elite predators on earth. Making actual Great Whites into casual lunch is something so mind boggling to me because just watching a shark hunt makes you think that they are the apex predator. Amazing creatures. Fungi, bugs and Mammals are rulers of the earth.
Microorganisms make up the vast majority of life on earth and they were here before us too. Don't forget them. Mammals can't do anything about them no matter how big or strong
Beaching, caught in man made objects, old age, stillbirth, wars with other pods or ecotypes sometimes, hunting, lack of food and human murder
I don't know how deep under water they go but in the depths of the ocean giant squids would eat them for breakfast. One thing they are very good at hunting are baby whales which would be the same size as an orca maybe even bigger
I put orcas and wolves in the same tier list. They are the perfect example of pack hunting and have a respected rank in their packs & pods: who eats first, they rotate breeding, and they communicate in ways I believe humans don't even closely understand.
Wolves are scared of bears n other stuff. Orcas have no fear because they are top. Wolves are not. But they def pack hunt. Pretty sure they both have sense of humor as well.
Orcas in my opinion is much more advanced in their respective environment. Their physical performance compared to their peer in the same environment is unmatched. They have the ability to swim 5 hours non-stop, they have a complicated mean of communication and complex social structure. And when they hunt, they also strategize and plan out their location/route - their ability to work as a group and take actions with long-term planning surpasses that of wolves.
Wolves get destroyed by bears and even Cougars 1v1. Defo not a good comparison.
And that is why you are just a random in the internet. You putting anything in a list is meaningless and nonfactor
Orcas much higher. Nothing can touch them whereas wolves sometimes (not often) are killed by bears.
i still find it crazy that whales are mammals and breathe like any of us
Looks like the same footage of the guy who captures UFOs on tape
Not really anything sharks can do it seems, orcas are bigger, stronger, faster, smarter, hunt in pods, know the shark's weaknesses, and are pretty much immune to whatever the shark can do
Well in the end the shark is a fish and the orca is a mammal, so one is far more versatile.
Orcas are much intelligent than sharks, unless a horde of sharks can kill at least 1 Orca if they can work together
@@imaginecheating9307In the Great White's case, never gonna happen. They are solitary creatures.
All the shark can do is dive to depths orcas won’t go
Orcas are Homelander
So are Orcas the apex predator? Or the shark? I think I was taught shark but that doesn’t seem the case lol
Orcas are the apex predators of the oceans. Sharks are also apex but you know they are a class below even dolphins
Orca and whales are more apex than shark. Shark is the most aggressive presence in the sea, but not the strongest species.
Orcas are Larger, Faster, Stronger, Smarter and they hunt in packs. Just 1 orca is enough to take down a great white, but seeing how they hunt in groups that's a needless debate
orcas are the rulers of the ocean, but they dont generally atrack humans so they are not as scary.
That's because we never see the pack of spearmwhales hunting cuz theyre too deep
The strangest part is that Orcas are only really after the shark’s liver. They literally won’t eat any part of the shark other than the liver.
That's not true. Yes they do go for the liver but even in this video it's clear they weren't going for just the liver and even ate more
It’s a delicacy for them
just like how they like whale's tongues
I think its cas it has the most nutrients
Fascinating they know to do that and teach others in the pod to do the same. Theyre surgical in getting that part of the shark 😅
Orcas are showing who's the real king of the ocean..
The fact the 70s-90s they made sharks the apex of the ocean in society...boy has that changed.
Shark: Hi. My names Bruce.
Orcas: Do you like the opera? (Hannibal Lecter lip sound)
Great Whites in the Eastern Pacific have gotten so scared of Orcas that just smelling one eating another shark nearby has been documented to cause Great White Sharks to dive almost a mile deep and swim clear across the ocean to North America.😅
So the orcas take turns attacking the shark so they don't tire themselves out. And they try flipping it over upside down to keep it a easy target that can't swim. Also forgot to mention it flips its prey to drown it. Super smart tactics
Sharks are way too slow and stupid compared to an orca, which may be one of the most intelligent species on the planet. Apparently shark liver is a delicacy.
Newcomers: OMG, I'm shocked and disturbed.
Casual Geographic Fans: "First time?" XD
Yeah lol
This is literally the first time this has been captured on video.

@@colachofcb how do you know what he means? Are you his boyfriend?
The moment I was waiting for all my life.
When I was a kid, I got into several arguments with my classmates about this.
We watched the Farallon Islands footage, and they couldn't believe an orca could actually put down a white shark.
Many years later, the Cape Town incidents and this footage finally proved my point
Hell, this is so satisfying lmao
Where was the graphic part' I must have missed it' didn't see the orcas killing a great white
This happened before. There was a team of 3 orcas who went around hunting GW. One would smash the shark into its side to cause concussion and flip over upside down. Then the other 2 would holds its fins so it couldn't flip back over. GW sharks drown if held upside down for so long. Then they would eat the juicy liver and move onto the next shark
It's not that they drown when upside down, they go into a state of paralysis. This is called tonic immobility. Humans often flip sharks when tagging them because it's not able to attack as it should.
This just goes to show how incredibly intelligent orcas are that they understand the biology of their prey and use their weaknesses against them. I didn't know this about orcas. :)
@@jessicawalters6014 thanks for clarifying. Orcas are seriously smart
Considering the fact Orcas move and attack as a pack, A horde of sharks could at least kill 1 Orca if they have the knowledge
@@jessicawalters6014 TOXIC (not tonic) immobility!

It’s was recorded in 2022 by scientist and that’s the best resolution they had?
you mean like we can see this everyday? and predict it? it's a rare opportunity of course it will be difficult to be fully prepared to make a proper footage
Orcas: Fight back!
Shark :💀
I didn’t see a hunt and chase, I see a dead shark’s limp body being toyed with. Probably was an orca kill but this footage is terrible and shows very little.
Shark: I am the boss
Orca: shut up, Iam the King
Orca: "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.”
It's like they had the top gear camera men filming .
Imagine if a pod learns to start eating humans and passes that knowledge on to others 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Orcas are without a doubt the apex predator of the seas. The mighty and fearsome Great White just doesn't compare to the size, speed and more importantly the intelligence of Orcas.
Fun fact: Orcas only eat the liver of sharks.
The sushi chefs of the ocean
The liver makes up around 15% of the total body weight so it could easily weigh as much as 3 or 4 people.
Orcas killed 17 GW sharks in a 2 hour time period last summer
Be great if the writing didn’t block the part of the video where you can actually see the attack
Am I the only one who feel sorry for the shark? The great white shark is an endangered species.
Orcas are by far the most fascinating animals on this blue planet
Good get ‘em, but not me please! Killer whales aren’t nicer in the wild but they don’t attack humans (only 1 known attack in history) and we can train them so we side with the whale over the shark it’s kinda funny.
The bullying killer of the ocean absolutely mercilessly shown who is boss by the real king of the oceans.
What an animal the Orca is.
That appeared to be a very whale orcastrated attack.
Never thought I'd feel sorry for jaws.
I don’t. They routinely do this to all their prey…tearing them apart while they’re alive. I’m not saying I wish all sharks to die (save it shark huggers), I’m just saying it’s nice to see them get theirs every now and then.
What do. You mean by 3 others may have been killed. Are they dead or not?
Jaws is NO MATCH for Free Willy!
This is why they have no predators.
I thought they are similar in size. The orcas are like 3 times the size of the "great white". Misleading clickbait.
Apart from humans. Orcas are the most ferocious predator ever to live.
Is there a link to the full video? It say it was an hour-long hunt
Will come out on the discovery channel documentary
"They encountered an average of 3.3 individual sharks per trip (range 0.5-6 sharks per trip) before the predations and 0 sharks for 45 days after the predation, when the first white shark was seen again on 1 July" (Towner et al 2022) the sharks knew there was opps so they avoided the area for weeks!!
All the creatures of the ocean feared Jaws, but even Jaws feared Free Willy.

Those Orcas must have seen Jaws 2 and said hell no, now it's on!
The Orca flipped the shark!!
this could upset the natural balance and the local seal colonies could grow unchecked which would then impact on the local fish stocks, they all play an important roll so should these orcas be chased far away by using sonar to scare them?
@@Ber-wt3hp everything plays an important role, millions of years of evolution has worked it out just right.

Where is a footage that 1 Orca kills a Fully Grow Great White Shark?

One orca still violates tf
This just warms my heart.
Orcas are just OP. They’re already bigger and stronger than great whites individually and they still hunt in groups.
Where’s the rest of the video? Or the beginning?
orcas are mammals sharks are fish!!!! enough said!!!
Free Willy really brain washed a lot of us back in the day 🤣
The most amazing fact about this, as far as I'm concerned, is that they only eat the shark liver. It shows utter contempt for the Shark, an apex predator, that they are so picky with what parts they eat.
Bro those things make a great white look tiny
Why do cover the video with text UNEEDED TEXT
Probably don't want to risk them being in their territory around their young
“There’s always a bigger fish” 🥶
Qui Gonn said it best lol
Orcas aren't fish genius
Orcas/dolphins are like humans but of the sea world orcas definitely rule the waves.
The fittest of the fittest survive in this world
I had no idea I lived in the southern cape of south africa😂
I bet they dare each other to do this
I'm sure it was more than four. More like fourteen.
Does this mean great whites will start migrating where orcas aren’t, like go further north to warmer areas? If so that’s not good.
My my how the turntables…
If Orca ever figure out we are the ones messing up the ocean and decide to take it out on us, we're doomed (or at least, cannot safely be in the water again).
Highly doubt orcas can take out aircraft carriers or submarines that are fully armed, they're smart but still animals...
Rather the other way. Orcas will be doomed if they ever decide to attack humans on purpose. They won‘t stand a chance against human tech and hunting skills.
@@redeye--2753 Exactly we have too much time evolving in our environment, if it was maybe 10.000 years ago, maybe it could be a potential threat in the ocean only.
They observe us as much as we observe them. They see other sea creatures getting killed by humans and how vengeful we are as a species. They know but they choose not to act on it.
They have been attacking our boats! They are learning that we are not friendly !
The whale is putting on a Band-Aid, with his teeth.
Bro the shark got Jumped 💀
How about Free Willy Vs Megalodon next? Who wins
Is that Starboard the Orca?
No animal can defeat the Orcas, they are so deadly when they want to be and super intelligent
No animal can defeat them because they're always in packs. Great whites are big enough, strong enough, fast enough, and ferocious enough to kill an orca (emphasis on the word "*an*"!). Orcas have advantages over Great Whites, but they're not great enough to make killing an orca impossible for a Great White. The problem is that a Great White will almost never encounter an orca that is alone. Orcas travel in packs, and they use other orcas to get their kills; they do not accomplish their kills by themselves. Orcas are also not deadly because they're intelligent. They're deadly because they hunt in packs. You don't need intelligence to kill in packs. Many species do it. Wolves, hyenas, and army ants all hunt larger animals successfully in packs. These species can kill things bigger than they are purely because they hunt in packs - not because they're smarter.
They hunt sharks when regular food is low
Warning??? Really get a grip
Guy recording this was the guy that recorded school fights, can’t see anything
Yo it’d be so cool if they filmed what they’re looking at
Like dude was filming the water most of the time
There is only one predator orcas wont mess with and its the nile crocodile... especially the old Gustave that used to be the biggest in the world who also killed 38 people.
Just last year a ideo was recorded showing a SINGLE orca taking down a great white ON THEIR OWN. These whales don;t even need a pod to take down a great white anymore.
Like the titanium balls on these orcas... Apparently shark tours in south africa have gone out of buisness because 2 half bother orcs either killed all the great whites or forced them to flee...
Imagine forcing the most feared predator of the ocean to flee....
Footage is very, very rare. Almost non existent.
Wait for the megalodon
The name should be Killer Shark not whale😂
A wolf in orcas clothing. Yup makes sense
So they eat the sharks and? Is the cycle of life and animals learn and evolve just like humans. Don't underestimate animals!
Megalodon is needed 😅
A megapode of 75 orcas killed a blue whale. Megalodon may take a few Orcas down but it will eventually succumb.
Don’t prove anything. The shark could of already been injured or old?
Old news! Scientists make a lot of claims, but where are the facts!
I've not seen, but heard that shark carcasses wash up on beaches sometimes with gaping wounds in the abdomen and their liver's removed. That's the specific organ the whales want. Just the liver.
They have caused great whites to move away from Cape Town. I wonder what suddenly spiked their interest cause there so many great whites previously
I’m on the orcas side but I’d like to see a pack of great whites against a pack of orcas 🤔
The white sharks are filled with calcium
That warning lol
I literally can't see anything
