  • The Montreal REM or the Reseau Express Metropolitan is an automated light metro that newly opened to add on to the Montreal metro system. It's super cool for any transit fans as it features technology such as platform screen doors from its automation that have not been seen before on continental north america.

this is possible the best video ever made. i believe that we have reached the peak of cinema. If has forkast a million fans I am one of them. If forkast has ten fans I am one of them. If forkast has no fans, that means I am no more on the earth. If world is against forkast , I am against the world. I love forkast till my last breath.

The Montreal skyline when viewed from the REM reminds me of Hong Kong! A little touch that I appreciate they did is the sound they chose for when the doors open and close. It's literally like you're logging into Windows 98 REM edition. Chef's kiss! I know not every REM station is elevated, but I think going the elevated route was a solid choice! Building not just an elevated system, but one with platform screen doors is not only protecting people between stations with the complete grade-separation and inside stations with the platform screen doors, but also no accidents with cars would occur! And of course, you're saving money by not tunneling! Not to mention, elevated trains are an iconic part of urban cultures, like the L in Chicago and the 7 in Queens! Before the 1950s, the LIRR's Babylon Branch had A LOT of grade-crossings, and this became a problem as more people moved to the South Shore and Sunrise Highway was built, so a mega project was launched in the 1950s to build the stations on elevated viaducts, with the last station along the branch to be elevated was Massapequa Park in 1980!
Gare Centrale was designed by John Schofield, architect-in-chief of CNR or Canadian National Railway. Construction started in 1926 but was halted in 1930 as a result of the Great Depression. Construction resumed in 1939 and finally opened in July 1943, as the first of a series of large-scale urban redevelopment projects. Along designing it and hotels for the railway, he also designed several schools, churches, Montreal Forum, commercial buildings, and hospitals, as well as residential buildings in both Montreal and Kingston, Ontario

Exactly, a median station on its own is poorly designed, but if you have the density to back it up AND have it enclosed in a way that you're protected from all that noise pollution like having platform screen doors, then it can be great design! Even better if there's a bus hub. Not to mention, Du Quartier was built to have access to the Dix30 shopping mall and there's nice housing too! I'm glad they replaced the original Champlain bridge, on top of adding rail space for the REM! The old 1962 one (which was a steel truss cantilever) was extremely degraded by de-icing salt and couldn't handle higher volumes of traffic. Now it can! The current cable-stay bridge was designed by Poul Ove Jensen, who was Dissing+Weitling's project manager for the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark! He also participated in the design for the Øresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden. It is one of the largest infrastructure projects ever built in North America and with an estimated 59 million vehicles a year, one of the busiest crossings on the continent. It is built to last over a century with the usage of stainless steel and high-performance concrete. The front lights of the REM trains are actually inspired by the new bridge!
Île des Sœurs, or Nuns' Island, is interesting! Basically from 1706 all the way to 1956, the nuns used the island for farming. In 1956, they sold it and the provincial government merged it with Verdun. The development of the island began in earnest with the opening of the original bridge. As part of a master plan, three thousand people moved into 800 units by 1968. Then three high-rise apartments were built the year after. After land was reclaimed, unsystematic construction has continued rapidly since then!

I moved away from Montreal pretty much as soon as they started construction on the REM. It seems really useful and I'm happy it didn't take forever to construct

Is the REM quiet? I heard that it was supposed to be very quiet but I saw articles that sad neighbors said it was loud. I feel those neighbors might be lying because they just don’t want people to have fast frequent reliable public transit

It's funny you said the the Metro is an heavy metro line because the Metro is 2,55 m wide while the REM is 3,05m Wide. So the Rem is Wider. The Metro Azur is 9 cars long (500 ft) 152,4 meters while the REM is 2 or 4 cars long 40 to 80 meters. but can go up to 10 cars long Alstom Metropolis = 20 M x 10 = 200 meters long. which can be wider and longer than the Bombardier-Alstom metro Azur (MPM-10).
The choice of the witdh was influence by the choice of the configuration. Ex. Montréal Métro narrower width saves on the Construction Tunnel cost while the Wider but shorter rem will save on the cost of constructing each station by compensating by an higher frequency.

"Finished on time"---eh, weeeeell...there were delays. Quite a few. And the budget has jumped a fair bit since the original--frankly, way too optimistic--estimate of 5 billion loonies. And the main part of the system has been delayed yet again due to the Mount Royal Tunnel turning out to be less "reusing existing infrastructure" to "oh god, what the hell, we have to rebuild the damn thing and run robot drills because the lunatics back then left explosive residue on the walls". And there have been a lot of contentious politics swirling around how the CDPQ strong-armed existing transit agencies.
    But...
It works for the most part. The first part came online five years after the project started in the teeth of COVID and the Ukranian War. Compare that to Toronto struggling to build a freaking tram line that has gone twelve years and counting? I'll say it is a success. And I was proud to be on the first train out during the open house weekend. And I ride it almost every week just for the view of the Montreal skyline.
