Dema is a city he created within the world of Trench, it represents his depression and nico and the niners are his insecurities. nico is the real name for blurryface from the last album. This whole song is made as a coded message for the rebles of dema to escape the city, east is up and i'm higher when i'm lower is a code to tell the banditos (the rebles) they are are escaping underground, but they want nico and the bishops to think they are going to fly out so they say i'm so high. Also east is a direction he always has correlated with overcoming depression and escaping, likely because he's a Christian and we are told that Christ will come from the east. *Edit something else others pointed out that I forgot to mention is that he likes to use the night to represent depression and morning to represent escaping that depressing so the east refers also refers to the sun rising in the east.
Oh do you honestly? I honestly believe that you honestly enjoy these reactions so much. However I think there might be some people doubting your honesty, eventhough you said honestly, which honestly in my opinion doesn't make sense, but honestly I can't remember what my point was.
Quick simple explanation: nico and the niners are a group of bishops that symbolize insecurities. Nico is Tyler’s bishop and symbolizes his insecurities he has for his music and what he creates (also symbolized as the black paint on his neck and hands) this song is about a group of people called the Banditos escaping the bishops (also I believe dema is the name of the place they are at). (Ps clikkies feel free to correct me in the comments)
To explain Nico and the Niners, you have to go back to Blurryface and then Vessel. In a short, extremely short, blurryface is red and and and he's all Tyler's insecurities. When Tylery wears black paint across his neck and hands it was a show of Blurryface trying to stop and control his creativity. The best way to look at all of Twenty One Pilots music is, Tyler has basically written a story, connecting things together with each album if you're quick enough to catch the pieces and put them all together. Tyler always creates these hunts for his fans to dig for and to find more answers or pieces of the story, for example to explain Demo, Nico and the Niners, the significance of yellow. Along with the realization that East is Up is actually the Bandito's way of telling Tyler the sun has risen in the sky, it's a new day.
The gibberish mumbling will play a message when reversed! Edit: Nico and the Niners represent all of Tyler insecurities. Dema represents depression. Tyler is trying to escape Dema while Nico is trying to stop him from succeeding.

Brosephin / PT3MQ1 although that May be true I try to recommend songs he likes and for this specific one the bride where josh goes ham is the part of focused on him to like
The lyrics are DEEP to all of TØP songs. Trench is an album that needs to be listened from start to finish. Josh and Tyler do the lot. Genre bending. I only discovered them this year and I relate to everything they do. They have been my quarantine affair, and now I'm a 47yr old Nanny who is a fan for life.
This is my favorite song off the album. I wrote my final essay for my songwriting class in college about it. The level of detail in this song and the clues they left behind for it are insane. In the song, the character is main character is named Clancy, who lives in the city of Dema (not demons, which is a common misunderstanding), which is designed to represent a city similar to the one in George Orwell’s 1984. One of the big lines that alludes to this is “Save your razor blades now, not yet” which is a reference to the book where razor blades were so scarce because everyone was using them to commit suicide. In the song, it means you won’t need your razor blades because you won’t need to commit suicide because you’re leaving the city of Dema. Nico is often understood to be the same person as Blurryface, who represents his anxiety. The Niners, who Nico leads, are his other insecurities. Together, they are the Bishops, and their goal is to imprison everyone within the city of Dema, the same way your insecurities imprison you in your depression. A lot of the song is understood to be sung by the Banditos (the rebels who wear the yellow tape) and are coded messages for how to escape the city of Dema. The Banditos are the people who managed to escape Dema and escape depression, but like they said “We’ll win but not everyone will get out”. A lot of people will beat their depression, but there will always be those we’ll lose to it. That is a summary of the key points. The truth is that every line in this song can be analyzed and interpreted, and there is lore even beyond this song.
The reversed parts of the song [Intro] Msilaiv ecnuoned ew -we denounce vialism Tsae eurt daeh dna amed evael lliw uoy -you will leave dema and head true east Sotidnab era ew -we are banditos [Outro] Sotidnab era ew -we are banditos

Nico, Andre, Lisden, Keons, Reisdro, Sacarver, Nills, Vetomo, and Listo are the 9 bishops. their names come from letters off different lyrics from blurryface songs. For example. Keons comes from cho keons mo (Choke On smoke) from heavy dirty soul and sacarver comes from She sacarver (Shes a Carver) from tear in my heart
Nico and the niners are 9 bishops in a city called Dema in the Trench album, pretty much the whole album is about people trying to escape Dema while the bishops hunt them down. correct me if I am wrong
That’s correct but the city DEMA also stands for Doubt, Expectation, Materialism and Anxiety, it’s sort of saying that he shouldn’t be controlled by objects, and others judging him causing mental instability
