This is taken from Pavarotti's first ever performance of Mario Cavaradossi, in Chicago at the Lyric Opera. A historic performance in many ways: MacNeil's return to the role of Scarpia after many years, Neblett's debut as Tosca, Pavarotti's debut as Cavaradossi, Tito Gobbi's direction of the production and Jesus Lopez-Cobos making some revisions to the score to come closer to what Puccini wanted.
In this rendition of the famous Act III aria, we get very liquid legato and excellent vocal performance with great high notes. His Cavaradossi here is definitely nostalgic and expressive, but he chooses not to go overboard with dynamic effects (although he does a subtle decrescendo and crescendo). It's a very effective interpretation in my opinion, I have heard better, but there are some aspects here that are incredible.
Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra conducted by Jesus Lopez-Cobos.
This was broadcast but the sound quality could pass it off as a studio recording.
(I included the music prior to the aria because I adore it)
Unbelievable, listen to this, what a lung : At the end of this aria he hold the final sound 7 seconds longer than in later years and much longer than most of actual interpretes... . He was gift for human mankind.
As I listened, I closed my eyes and remembered the first time I'd heard him sing! I was very young, but I do remember the thrill and the privilege! Lo amerò sempre Luciano!
Great audio quality and a great performance... very effective, I agree. the voice is super fresh and energetic.
His voice drags me into his despair ....wow!!!
The man, the voice, maturity, experience all went into the making of the Maestro Pavarotti!! Bravo Bravo!! Sella in Canada!
Bravissimo! Bella Voce. The standard of great Bel Canto singing in every way. SOLI DEO GLORIA!
Very moving version. What a great singer.
I love his early recordings, when he still hadn't been the Big P. but had been a very very good singer.
Yes, all the preforming and pressure led to vocal decline...
so pure - the greatest of my lifetime.
Ahime'......quanto mi manchi Maestro!
Wonderful Mooorhe. He is still in great command here.
Great singer

@@Monnarchmonnarchy I really love Luciano Pavarotti, he was right about not everyone being able to be a real tenor
@@gualtiermalde645 no! Dont talk like this!
Iv checked a much, its cause of timbre! Baries goes to tenors.
Pav was a real tenor, stefano, caruso, corelli, whatever you will name they were are not a tenors not cause of agility, but timbre!
That will be more correctly! Opera got a wrong timbres.
I have to say that callas was a mezzo, you can deny my words but its a facts
@alvarogm86 70's 60's every decade were glorious for him

gREATEST SINGER/TENOR ALL TIMES.. Makes Caruso & Lanza sick in Comparison..
Caruso's worst performace is better than this. Get your facts straight...
in no way.... have herd both hundreds of times.
This is a pretty good version of the aria from Pavarotti’s prime, but plenty of tenors were better than him: Caruso, Gigli, Lauri Volpi, Bjorling, Corelli, Di Stefano.
@@juanprc10 you wrong. Pav was a real tenor.
Bass caruso was an idiot with his screams, others were a baries. corelli was a stressed in voice with histeric falsetto, stefano has never goes on a clear G4
@@umaratabilgi161 put your caruso in your trash, that dilettante was a bass, he screamed like a child on top
5:26 so painful to listen his struggles, he damaged his voice on verismo, cause uncoloured tenor.
Others from tapes were just imitating a tenors, a freaks, i am sick of propoganda of bsss caruso, bari barker sandwiched monaco, bari coreli with his histeric and falsetto, they all were imitators
