- Clifton's Cafeteria, once part of a chain of eight Clifton's restaurants, was the oldest surviving cafeteria-style eatery in Los Angeles[1] and the largest public cafeteria in the world[2] when it closed in 2018. Founded in 1931 by Clifford Clinton,[3][4] the design of the restaurants included exotic decor and facades that were "kitschy and theatrical", and would eventually include multi-story fake redwood trees, stuffed lions, neon plants, and a petrified wood bar.

I remember the one in Lakewood mall. My mom loved going there. 😋❤️
Thanks for the info Wally Cox
My parents took us kiddos many time to the clifton location in Los Angeles. It was always a big deal for us kids and I loved hearing the waterfall sounds. This was in the late 1950's and 60's.
thanks for sharing those nice memories
Thanks for bringing back a great memory.
thanks for watching
Wow!!!! Use to work at Lakewood Clifton’s just amazing bosses and co workers.
thanks for sharing those memories
Be here on Sundays after church, we'd always look forward to the Fried Chicken, hush puppy and potatoes dish and a great dessert. Wish it were still here.
During summers in the sixties my friend and I would take the bus downtown to shop on most Saturday mornings at the old stores, Woolworth's, Sears, May Company. We'd have a leisurely lunch at Clifton's Cafeteria on Broadway. It was a lot of fun. The garden setting was very nice and the food was yummy. Good memories, thank you for your video to walk back in time.
thank you for sharing those nice memories

My parents took me to the Pacific Seas as a child in early 1950’s. I loved it. It was a fabulous place. I will always cherish those memories!
One of my first jobs was working as a busboy at Lakewood Cliftons cafeteria. The manager at the time had me clean out the basement where I found the original glow dial clock that used to hang inside the restaurant, repaired the clock, and it still works beautifully my name is Leo and I would like to hear back from you, I have a picture of the clock and it’s in my living room
Thank you for doing this piece!
Thank you for watching
@EricCProductions76 My wife, who's the great grand daughter of Clifford Clinton. Thanks you. 😊
I loved going there when I was a kid. My mom would take me there a couple of times a year back in the late 50's early 60's, and at my insistence we always sat up in the redwood canopy. They would stick a little American flag in the mash potatoes that you turned into the cashier for a small toy.
Awesome, thanks for sharing your memories
As a kid growing up my parents would take us kids to Cliftons on our Birthday.. Back in the day if you called and told them you were going to Celebrate a birthday they would give you a birthday cake 🎂
thanks for sharing your memories
It closed??? I hadn't known. Damn! Damn! Damn!
missed it by a few years my friend.

Maybe, but did you know it in its heyday? I did. Also, do you know the story of its founder, Clifford Clifton? He was a real hero. Thanks to the movement he started, the Mayor, the Chief of Police and the D.A were all kicked out of office for corruption. Unfortunately, no movie was ever made, because they couldn't prove the Police Chief's corruption, and people were afraid of being sued for slander. Forgive me if I have made a few errors ,but I learned about this case many years ago, and some details have slipped my mind. Do yourself a favor and look it up. Oh, yeah, Clinton's life was threatened and his car was bombed. They weren't playing around. A real hero.
@@QUABLEDISTOCFICKLEPO awesome, thanks for sharing that information about this movement. He was also a charitable man who helped the hungry during the Great Depression by offering them meals for free or whatever they could pay. A very honorable man.

You should check the facts. My memory is not perfect.
@@QUABLEDISTOCFICKLEPO I will, thank you
Remember don't give up on La Canasta furnishings video ps I'm in Mexico right now so it's hard for me to get connection 📲👍😇
have a safe trip
I am heartbroken that the idiot who bought Clifton's in 2012 and tried to expand it into a bloated, multi-floor nightclub, ultimately killed this beautiful piece of living history. I was never happier than when I was eating a tasty lunch at Clifton's, looking up at the towering redwood trees and time-traveling to my favorite era, the 1940s. Looks like most of your footage is of the post 2012 remodel, which is a pity. It was glossy enough, but ultimately, nothing more than the fruit of one man's foolish, overblown ego. The humble, good-hearted vintage original was a far better experience. I miss it so much and it makes me very sad to know that I will likely never be able to visit again. The owner should close the remodeled upper floors, own that he lacked the experience and capital to undertake such a huge project, and reopen the ground floor cafeteria. It always did great business. At least he'd be making some money. And ordinary people like me would be so very happy. I honestly think heaven must be a lot like having lunch at the old Clifton's Brookdale.
My mom took me to the Clifton's in the Lakewood Shopping Mall. I felt so grown-up eating there. It seemed like such a fancy restaurant to a little girl😄
thanks for sharing your nice memory
OMG! Thank you so much for this! It was the West Covina location I would go to with my dad. The last time we went my mom was having a medical procedure and we had to go get something to eat. My dad remembered the LA location and he suggesting there. Still remember sitting in the cafe. This video was posted on the anniversary of my Mom's passing 13 years ago. Thank you so much for bringing back some great memories!
thank you for your suggestion and for watching
I remember eating at Cliftons as a kid in the 80s. We were sitting across from a man taking his elderly mother out to lunch. I just remember the poor guy having the hardest time with his mother. She was hitting the food away from her mouth, throwing things, yelling. After having enough he decided to take his mother home, so he went to get her coat off the coat rack and she was screaming at the top of her lungs "Dan, Dan, Dan, Dan" ......He scurried back to the table to help his mother with her coat and she's stil screaming "Dan, Dan, Dan, Dan" ......By this time, everyone's looking and he's sweating, face red from exhaustion and embarrassment. His mom is still screaming his name until her dentures fall out and now his mom is screaming with no teeth and he's trying to find her teeth on the floor. Finally, a dining room attendant helps him and as he's rolling his mom out of Clifton's with his mom still screaming "Dan, Dan, Dan, Dan" ......The attendant ask "Whose Dan? He says "Me or my late father, I'm not sure which one she's senile"
Interesting story. Thanks for sharing that.
How sad. It was so sweet of that man to try and make his mother happy. My husband has dementia and although he's usually easy enough to manage, there are times when he just acts out and that's when we know to just give up and put him to bed.
You mentioned salad jello and that brought back some very disturbing memories from my childhood. Sucks that most of the Cliftons Cafeterias were closed because they looked really cool almost like a Incredible universe location. Glad that there is still one around and my god from those videos dose it look awesome maybe one day I can see it for my self and have a slice of prime rib with a cold glass of rum. Great video!
thanks for watching
They ruined it when they sold it and the people gentrified it
I WILL NEVER FORGIVE ANDREW MEIRAN AND WEAZEL JOSE HUIZAR FOR RUNNING IT TO THE GROUND
Exactly 😞
I’ll name stores that I have been to but went out business
-Lord and Taylor
-Pier 1 imports
-Sports Authority
-Hhgregg
-Toys R Us
That’s all I can think of for now also I hope these are good ideas to add to your list of ideas. And if your not familiar with one I can tell you about it.
These are all the ones I can think of also
I haven't been to Hhgregg or Lord and Taylor. Been to all of the other. Its funny that you mentioned the others because I am going to be doing a couple of abandoned stores: Pier 1 Imports, Sports Authority and Toys R Us/Babies R Us on my other channel pretty soon.
The only reason I know about lord and Taylor because we had one in a mall called Tyson’s center mall in D.C sadly we don’t go there anymore due to not going to thanksgiving there anymore I miss Tysons Center it was such a good mall to go Black Friday shopping. Oh the good ol days 😢
The 80’s and 90’s were amazing times for me going to Cliftons with my grandparents having lived near by in the Pico Union area. Once the revamped version opened up, although was made to look like its old version had totally lost its charm. The food was trash and overpriced. The tiki bar as an adult was pretty cool. I miss the strawberry horchata, either fried chicken or the roast beef with brown vegi rice. And my all time favorite, the custard cake with raisins in it. It was simply divine! I would also go to the arcade half a block down after a nice meal.
thanks for sharing your memories
First!
