I'm glad it was helpful! Just wanted to explain the whole thing from scratch really.

Hi Joe! I am having trouble with recording and editing my podcast on Audacity. To summarize, I basically use a USB mic. It does not sound loud on the playback. Even when I increase the volume to the max. I used your helpful tip on increasing the sound and it work on the second clip. However, it did not work on the first despite both clips being joined smoothly. I am also trying to block out the distant noise that comes from the back of my audio. I am unsure how to do this. Can you please provide a tip as well as what is the meaning of the -20 that was found in the drop menu when you selected "Effect - Loudness Normalisation" ?
Thank you for always answering my questions gracefully. I have waited months to learn about Audacity as I am not too familiar with it. I really appreciate you always helping out!

      Hi Chai,
Firstly, I'll answer the question about Normalization. The -2.0db is just the maximum peak level that it'll increase your audio by, or decrease your audio to.
Regarding your recording, it sounds like there are a few issues that would ideally be fixed on the way in, rather than trying to fix each recording you make. What USB mic do you have? Perhaps it's a very quiet mic? How close is it to your mouth? Is the input level turned up in Windows audio settings? Also, could you test another USB if you have one to see if it's the mic or the settings that are the problem?
If you can't get it sorted, you can use the 'Amplify' effect instead to increase the level of the whole recording from the start.
For the issues with distant noise, if you're referring to reverb/echo, this can be difficult to remove. And it's best to treat your room with acoustic panels and soft furnishings, or record in another room if you can. If none of this is possible, you could consider using a dynamic mic instead (if you're currently using a condenser mic). Dynamic mics are less sensitive than condenser mics so pick up less room sound typically.

@@JoeAtClaricast Hi Joe! I have a Thronmax Mdrill One Pro. Unfortunately I am unable to actually test with another USB mic. This happens to be the only mic that I have.
I have tried the 'Amplify' feature but it does not seem to work for my first clip for some odd reason. Hence, the first clip is really low with regards to volume whereas I was able to attain a netter hearing volume for the second clip somehow.
Ahh I see. It actually is a bit difficult to remove the background sound.
Can you kindly post more podcasting editing videos? I am learning a ton from your videos but still wish to learn more
