As a Qualified Group Cycle (spin) instructor I found your observations very interesting. The quality of a Group Cycle class is very much dependant on the instructor and how they have used the music, not all instructors do this well. Or change their playlist very often! The choice of music is important as it determines the structure of the class. IMO the instructor should explain what the class should expect during the class, how it has been structured and during the class what muscle groups the positions and variations of the moves are targeting. The studios I instruct in have the benefit of allowing the individual bike stats to be shown on a large screen for all the class to see, this makes it easy for me to see how the class is performing and for the class to move with me to the cadence and power I want them to achieve. I find this helps motivation. Personally I'm not in favour of using weights during a cycle class. Out of all the classes I instruct Group Cycle is by far the most enjoyable to instruct. Your comment on how loud the music was in the Soulcycle class is interesting, as there are maximum levels set by Health & Safety regulations, having it so loud that the instructor, even when using a microphone, was difficult to hear is just wrong. IME Group Cycle is far more popular with females, who I find are generally far more "up for it' than the men who turn up in their cycling bibs who are far more reluctant to get into the vibe of the class.
Wow, Thank you for doing that, Joel! So that I don't ever have to! ;) I love that you're pushing yourself out of your comfort zone! That is a challenge I will definitely take on myself. You have inspired me to try more new things and to be more open to new experiences. Thank you for that! I've already started working out again, which has been great for my energy and general mental health. You gave me that extra push I needed after watching your fitness journey post. Keep pushing yourself and I'll do the same! Most importantly, keep being your awesome self. Love you and your channel!
That was fun to watch! We've never been to a spin class before, unless you count going for a bike ride which is even cheaper than your super cheap spin class 😃
What a surprise that you did this cycling comparison...LOL!! Fitness can be as cheap as you want; it's the effort and work put into it. Loved seeing several people out and about in the background!!
I love spin class and was going for about a year before lockdown. I don't want to go to any kind of gym again for a while since I live just outside of NYC and the virus hit hard here at the beginning. Hoping when it's safe to get back out there, I'll be loving spin class again. For now, I'm hiking, running, and doing at home workouts. Stay healthy and safe!
Love your videos!! I felt the same at first with spin but then grew to LOVE it, I think the good music helps, even if it is really loud! Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!
I had exactly the same experience at OT at first. HATED it. But found it to be quite addictive and was hooked from there!! I don’t think that Spin would be my thing although the community part would be similar to OT and make it more fun. But glad you had a great experience!
If you like HIIT style classes you should try a Les Mills Sprint class! It's a cycling class but HIIT style and it's only 30 mins (including warm up and cool down). I absolutely love it!
Very informative Joel! I took a spin class once and I left 15 minutes into it. I absolutely hated it, so not my vibe.🤣 But, I actually love road cycling! At the risk of sounding like an old farty person, be careful of that loud music! I used to do a hip hop dance exercise class and I was near a speaker many times. Regardless, due to the loud music I now have permanent high frequency hearing loss in the ear that was closest to that speaker. Ya might want to invest in some ear plugs for the loud music. You only get one set of ears in this lifetime! Oh dear god, I do sound old! 🤦🏼♀️🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for the tip, next time I might take some ear plugs - you'd still be able to hear the music considering how loud it is!! But at least you're protected then!
I’ve put on so much weight over lockdown so I’m really interested in joining some classes. Personally I love cycling over other types of cardio so spin classes definitely sound more like my thing. Thank you for making the vid Joel! x
You mentioned two places for the expensive spin class. Maybe check the other one out to see if the poor points of the first one are better or improved. This was a nice change for a regular vlog channel. You brought your nervousness and inexperience to the video and, at least for myself, I felt it as well. In the cheaper class you should find out if they have any male instructors. They probably would run a stronger workout, you did mention a male instructor for the Soulcycle class. Nice job 👍
Sounds like Orange Theory is definitely your thing. 👍🏻😉 We have bikes at our place in Maine and it KILLS my legs and butt, lol. I couldn’t do JUST cycling. Really love mixing it up with the weights, push ups, ab workouts, etc. Thanks for the spinning review!
haha I would say SoulCycle is a bit culty but then again I'm fully in the Orange Theory cult! haha! Yeah I'm the same Chris - I prefer to mix it up a bit!
Oops that's so late here and i'm so sleepy so i have to watch your video tomorrow, sorry for that😴😁 i hope you upload your videos a bit earlier. Love you so much🥰❤❤
This is off topic, but I was wondering if you and Lia considered a print-on-demand provider to do your merch. It doesn’t cost you anything, you can get as creative as you like with designs and merchandise, and they carry all sizes. They even handle the orders and payments, you just collect your percentage after promoting your products.
Much more fun would be a premium Italian bicycle with quality components. They’ll last for decades and the scenery changes every time. Not just that but you get to keep a beautiful Italian bike.
I think it is crucial to exercise the upper body as well, perhaps even more so, than lower...... I would agree that it's likely better suited for the ladies........ Interesting vid Joel..........
Yes, tried it a few years ago with some coworkers and not my thing (the asthma attack that hit me at the end of the class may have had something to do with that.) I prefer HIIT/functional fitness.
omg i was definitely in that 4pm notting hill class with micky! i promise spinning gets easier over time and it has made me feel so so much stronger - there's also cheaper boutique spin studios in london than soul like boomcycle and psycle that you should give a try!
That’s so cool!! It was a good session! You were all great, I was enviously looking at everyone being able to co-ordinate your legs and the body movements! Haha
Let's be practical. £26 per class is a LOT! If you want to add spin to your exercise regimen, do orange theory/circuit training and the cheaper spin class on the same day. I was wondering if any of the local gyms offer an indoor, heated pool. Swimming exercises all the major muscle groups, plus you have the water resistance as well. By strapping on ankle and wrist weights, you can make swimming even more effective. Besides, if you are going to sweat, do it in the pool where you won't notice it.
Notting Hill! When I visited London I stayed in Holland Park. I usually ventured south toward Kensington High Street but I totally know where you were.
Joel Wood - I’m late sometimes watching, because I have been watching all the commercials all the way through and want the time to do that. I’m really enjoying your channel, Joel and Lia and those two Brits. 😊👍
I heard of SoulCycle through a youtuber in California who tried it for a month (3 classes a week) at one in San Diego. She heard some buzz about it and thought it was a good video idea and wanted to see if A. She liked it. B. She saw any difference in her health/body etc. and C. It was worth the money because it was very expensive. It was $20 for the first class only to try it and then $28 for future single classes but if you bought multiple classes the price was a bit less. Also it cost $3 to rent those shoes that click into the bike. So technically it costs $31 per class if you don't buy multiple classes and the shoe rental was the same regardless. I honestly don't think that is fair to people to charge extra for shoes that are required to use on their machines. The cost for the class should include that if it is required. She really enjoyed it once she got used to the workouts and the themed classes were her favorite, but in the end it was just too much money to do all the time. Her monthly gym membership was only $20 per month so it definitely was more for that class than her gym for an entire month. She had said she will try it once in a while but not as much as she did before. I guess if you can afford it, then it would be good to do once per week to get that good cardio and work your legs and butt. She didn't compare it to a regular spin class like you did. Not sure if they offer any alternative like you had to compare it where she lives. It's great to get peoples feedback on things like this so if someone was curious about it they can get someone's opinion on it. We have an Orange Theory in the city next to my town and wasn't really sure what it was until I saw you talk about it on your channel. So, thank you for all your opinion videos on things like this. Sorry, I rambled...
You will enjoy it, and if you do it at 6:45 your day will be amazing. Keep going to the cheap one because the bicycle work the same muscle. What makes the class is the music and teacher scream to you. Please explain me what's the difference of the soul class
You're so good! Such discipline. Good for you. In addition to your legs don't you get a good bit of cardio doing it? (you can tell I'm not an exercise thing). Yes, get out of your comfort zone. That's always good.
Joelllllll!!!!! After all this talk about Brits apologizing for showing American vids in class bc our accents are annoying, I wanted to ask you your opinion on this! What is it about the accent that annoys brits??
hahaha, you'll notice I cut after "fitness" and it's because I started listing things including "dogs" and I thought it sounded weird so I cut it out haha!
Just get yourself a bicycle and ride it around town. One time cost and you get plenty of leg exercise. You can even take it out to the country and ride it out there. Stick to your regular exercise and get a bicycle.
It almost seems like there's only spin classes in the uk. Man I wish I had a gym like class to go, so I could do other exercises besides walking around the block and pilates. I've been lacking at my pilates for three weeks.

Loving the London scenery. Some day I’ll get to see England in autumn.
Can't wait for you to see it in person!
If you have proper form and good resistance, which takes time, spin is basically a full body workout. Core is super important.
As a Qualified Group Cycle (spin) instructor I found your observations very interesting.
The quality of a Group Cycle class is very much dependant on the instructor and how they have used the music, not all instructors do this well. Or change their playlist very often! I’m so glad you tried spin! I love it for the cardio and ab/leg workout I get from it as opposed to weight lifting and running.
