I used to do that trip every single workday for 5 years... that bouncing, screeching, and even the view of Jodrell Bank telescope got old very fast! especially when said train got stuck in Delamere Forest with a tree on the line, broke down in the middle of nowehere or got stuck coming out of Stockport on an extremely regular basis in the commuter hours... I once kept a record of it over a month and worked out that only around 20% of my daily commute services ran on time in that period. On the plus side, I got a LOT of money back in refunds :P
It's bouncy because it's empty. I remember going HSTs between Market Harborough and Leicester on the MML in the late 80s and early 90s they were always bouncing around at 90mph, they were very bouncy going over the points and the curved bridge just outside Great Bowden (Market Harborough) were the former LNWR use to go under the MML great times.

The UK is built on a series of incompetent systems and broken promises. If it's a temporary measure it usually is left there for years. Hence the pacer's unorthodox longevity.

As Adam Sayer pointed out, trains are smooth, I've traveled between Manchester airport and Manchester Piccadilly line on various trains, all are smooth except for the Pacer. The one good thing I'll say about the Pacer is considering the speeds it got upto the element of danger was always in my mind!! I always felt in a ""train"" like this we shouldn't be going this fast lol😂😂

Meh stand in the corridor of a TfW 158 and you'll find it bounces a similar amount a lot of the time. This pacer wasn't really bouncing much for a pacer.
British railways are crap. All of them. But their roads are even worse so people keeps using them even if the lines are 200 years old, the trains 60 and the prices ridiculous.
@@jameshunt1516 I think a few Pacers went there for trial as the intercity 125 hst units were sent there and are still in use and I have seen MK2 coaches in intercity swallow livery in a abandoned train yard on a kids TV drama series called the tribe way back in the late 1990's early 2000's. I have also seen a picture of a Pacer that was sent to Canada for testing.

Snailwell were scrapping the 1st gen units too quickly with their incinerator so BR had to have something put together quick to replace them.

A lot of the problem is poor track not maintained properly. If these trains had not been introduced more lines would have shut.

I've personally witnessed Budd RDC's do this in the States at least as bad.
They'll last much longer only if they had bogies right from the start. But that remains a myth.
