The men usually playing cards/dominoes, watching football matches on tv, or talk the whole night while drink coffee to keep them awake. Ronda malam is no longer relevant as people nowadays get more busy and people now can afford security officers to keep their neighborhood. Also, people in big cities tend to live individually and barely socialize (not shocking).
it dates from old Malay culture, like Nightwatch in case there is an attack from other tribes or animals, natural disasters, ppl asking for help, domestic violence, etc. Bali still has this.
In my country, we just call it really Ronda and usually the volunteer tanods or barangay/community peace force officers (can be both men or women) are the ones doing it.
