- Russian-born Jewish singer-songwriter Regina Spektor reflects on her immigration to New York in 1989--from the fantasies she and her cousin had about moving to the tropics to the realities of adjusting to life in the Bronx, where their new Jewish community became an extension of her family.
Regina came to the United States through HIAS, an organization that rescues, resettles, and reunites vulnerable refugees. Her interview is part of HIAS' myStory project; view more videos at www.myStory.hias.org.
Regina was a little bit of a weird duckling turned into a swan. Her smile is so infectious and pretty.
I love how she constantly smiles. Good to see an artist who's enthusiastic instead of lazy and laconic. Too many musicians adopt the "don't give a fuck, don't say a word" attitude.

Geez. The stereotyping in these comments is just; a lot! Musicians are not lazy and laconic. It takes an incredible amount of work to make a career in music. What you label as moody, depressed, mood swings is so inaccurate. Artists, musicians in particular, tend to feel emotion and understand emotions on a far deeper level. It’s not depression, it’s empathy and passion. Musicians are really quite opposite of the “don’t give a fuck” attitude.
I would give anything to sit down and have a conversation with Regina. I completely adore her.

I always loved Russians and have ALWAYS loved Regina. Such natural talent and such a big heart. She truly loves her fans and what she does and respects the people.

What an incredible story. My grandfather was born in Kiev (when that was Russia) and his family left for Canada for my mother was born. This was my Jewish side, Russian and Lithuanian. We moved too much during my childhood between Montreal, NJ, NY, back and forth. I was excellent on piano and went very far with ballet, training at two out of the three professional schools in Canada. Sadly, my last year there, away from home, Dad was transferred again to NY (Westchester). I felt I had this career decision to make at 15, and I was losing my love for ballet....I had forgotten I'd wanted CATS and Broadway....ballet will do that to you. Looking back, I was so burnt out from working hard and trying to fit in, I only wanted the latter. I stopped dancing when I quit ballet, only to end up majoring in theatre in college. This all affected me in so many ways. I am so musical, I still choreograph in my head, I do community theatre and get great parts but stop from making it professional and scary....I don't want to hate something I love again. I heard "Real Love" by Regina a few years ago and replayed it 100 times. That was all I knew...I am in NYC giving it a trial to move here and saw she was playing, again, by accident. I went alone March 11th and I haven't stopped watching her since. I adore that exact style of music, I agree about the orchestra tuning being one of the greatest sound on earth...interesting you came through Vienna, as that was the first place I ever traveled. Lastly, whenn you called your Mom from the stage, I was moved to tears as March 2nd marked my Mom's 3rd yurtzeit. I feel like the only Jew left in my family, which has fallen apart. I've been so down about where life is at and so scared, but my Mom is doing little things - connected me to a Jewish woman who gave me a dress rehearsal ticket to NYC Ballet's "Sleeping Beauty," and then we met again, got me to win the lotto on her yurtzeit to Kinky Boots, on a night Cyndi Lauper was there. Told her that story, so grateful. Then it got me to your concert. Hold on tight to those you love. Beautiful story, thank you for sharing.
Here is an important story for all of us Americans who are so jaded and cool that we have no idea what it means to be free. Thanks Regina and especially thanks to HIAS and people who give a shit.

Ahh.. I went through the same thing and about at the same age too. At 1989 we left USSR, went to Vienna, but instead of going to US, we went to Israel. Then we moved to Canada and now I've returned to Russia and live here for over 10 years now. It was a nice trip for me. It changed me and my life in a way it could never happen without such a trip. Give me understanding of our world and society in a way, that not so many people understand. I berated my fate at first, but now I'm glad it happened.
She is the most beautiful person to exist, I love seeing her recall memories wow. Regina I love you forever

I was raised on the Beatles, and now the fact that she's my single favorite musician is making a lot of sense; it's like, she has my exact same sensibilities in terms of taking what the Beatles did to the next step; and I migrated countries under stressful circumstances as well ... the fact that we have so much in common is both freaking me out and explaining things about why her music strikes such a chord with me.
An inspirational contemporary of my generation. Than you Regina! Thank you Jewish Welfare and thank you our parents for making such a scary journey and sacrifice for us.

I didn't think it was possible, but this only endears me even more to her and her work. I already knew many of the events in her life from other interviews, but this was related in a way that showed her deepest feelings about her initially bewildering but eventually wonderful journey.
