Tucked away in a rural mountainous area in France, lies a historic listed building now gloomily left to the mercy of nature.
Originally the residence of a French commander, the building was founded in the year 1250 when it was built around a pre-existing Romanesque church. It was then organized as a stronghold on a square plan, around a closed courtyard.
A century later, the buildings were devolved to a Catholic military order.
During the religious wars between the Calvinists and the Catholic league in the late 16th century, the estate got ruined. It was only in the early 18th century that the barns, castle and the church underwent restoration works, after which the castle and its domain were sold as national property.
In 1883, the western main building was redesigned, and this covered gallery against the facade was constructed, overlooking the courtyard. What makes this place so precious, is that it is the only commandery to have kept its interior fittings.
Stepping into each room feels like you have traveled centuries back in time, as everything sits magically crystallized in time.
Immerse yourself into a piece of truly preserved French history, as we visit and document this majestic desolate castle today.

I have such mixed feelings about these abandoned places, especially when beautiful items are left to rot, break and decay beyond repair or use. I love to see these places, but I feel so sad at the same time. I’m haunted by the “why” and “how”. It breaks my heart to see Art go to dust. Such a waste.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, that is what is made of us.
Same. I find it inconceivable a modern state letting a 13th century piece of history and its interior rot!!
The feeling is mutual! 😔
Architectural gold mine, literally. That is a brilliant find…I can’t believe it’s been left untouched…you discovered the best abandoned property I’ve seen…thanks…be safe…
Agree with you. If I was younger, had money and loved to live in France... But the french characters are not compatible with my way to look at live. I am German and this mentality...and they let you feel that they do not like the Germans at all. Very old hate is still preserved in this country.
At 4:25 time stamp look at the windows above their head to the right. Either it's another explorer or you caught evidence of a ghost. It gave me chills. Another beautiful video.
Good catch!!!
definitely not alone. At the 3:36 mark a figure in a white, old fashioned shirt appears above you at the windows. Right to left. Stops and appears to watch you then walks slowly away. Figure appears again at 4:24 left to right, walks along corridor. Again figure returns at 4:46 from R t L, stops peers from the window to the courtyard, lingers a few seconds then disappeared. Slow down speed to .25 and watch in slow motion. Fascinating !
I came here to write the same thing. That’s wild!!
It is actually one of our friends that accompanied us on this explore. He's an photographer and was walking through the gallery at the time we filmed our introduction in the inner courtyard. Good eye for detail, though! ;-)
Wow….that was an amazing tour thanks………Some of the castle looked very old and some a little like yesterday. What did the door behind the chest of magazines lead to! How sad that a beautiful home like this was abandoned. Maybe it was passed down to the current owners who didn’t want it. PS full such lovely treasures, books, photos and the lovely oak wood. 👋🇬🇧
I hope someone will buy this beautiful building and restore it. Such a crime to let it sit empty and falling apart. Really sad, such a beautiful piece of architecture and history.
So true I agree it's a very beautiful castle for sure I loved it 👍👌😘😊
It's too far gone ..imo

That's what my thoughts are . Get a family in there to look after it and do what repairs they could. Keep the yard area for. A .family could do quite a bit. And keep the vandals out. If people wanted to " tour it". Charge a fee and put that towards the property.
What a beautiful old castle! So nice to see you two filming together. I really like it when you guys are together. Happy young expeditions. A big hug from Brazil.
Thank You so much both of you for taking me to see the beautiful old castle and antique items that are hard to find and should be preserved

The true artistry of the rarest kind. It gave us a glimpse into another era we who live in this modern world could only dream of. The opulence and grandeur of vast fortunes that were passed down through the centuries to their rightful heirs. I hope and pray this castle will last for many years to come before nature and the passage of time consumes it completely. What a privilege to have a glimpse into a time of rare beauty and grace. One of the last rooms that was connected to a much smaller one was no doubt the children's room and the other belonged to the Au Pare (sp ?) or as we know them here Nannies. Thank you for showing us the gem and for the great effort it took to get there.
Or at least everything inside is rescued. I can't stand the thought that it will all be lost
Hello Christine how are you doing
The (water) container and basin on the wall by the door was most likely for anyone coming in to rinse off their dirty hands before entering the main part of the castle.
The item that you said might be equipment for a fireplace is most likely a "steel" for sharpening kitchen knives by dragging the knife blade over the surface at a certain angle.
The utensils in the drawer were not tarnished, so they probably aren't real sterling silver, but simply stainless steel for everyday use.
The game with the smalls balls is called Oware (or the common English name is awari), played worldwide with possible origins in Africa.

The basin in the main hallway/entrance is a hand washing station.
Usually for when one has been working outdoors, or has been working with animals, or when travelling by coach after a long trip.
It’s a common site in France amongst country farmhouses and chateaus!
They may be found in other European countries.
The ‘secret door’ is simply a servants hallway so that they are not seen in the main hallways, mostly done in houses of the era. In this case it looks as though they are servants quarters possibly.
This was done so that the servants seem to appear out of thin air, so-to-speak, to add to an air of efficiency, silence and minimal ‘visual’ intrusion into the lords home domain.
IMHO . . .
Mm 😮
😱
Again the Holy Water Fount used to make the sign of the cross when entering. Very Catholic tradition as water is blessed by the local priest.
I disagree with the hand washing station, I believe it held holy water. Given all the religious pictures and artwork.

So much to say. First-it’s easy to look up the language in google so you can translate!
As you come in the front door. It holds holy water. They were very catholic. The white dove donates purity. As does the heart and blood- for Jesus. It says; He is under the knife of sad suffering but from heaven He awaits his just reward.
Second: mothers or older adult stay near the children. As I see, you go in the mother’s room. The box on the marble table is her dressing table. The box says-Lentitive and softening for whiteness and velvety complexion. Rice flour, extra fine. Makeup-maquillage. The Frozen Brothers.
Blue box-wrong! It is a popular painting technique and it says Franco-Russe. France-Russia. It was a fine set of letter writing papers and envelopes. It may have even had a pretty wax and seal.
The small boxes usually jewelry.
Sorry-painting that has a silver shine is not old. Rather new-50 years. Same with the frame.
Enjoy it but treat it like a museum. Don’t sit on the furniture! I think those leather chairs are far older than you think!
Remember-men and women almost always had their own bedrooms. If not they had single beds in one room. As they aged, they would have moved downstairs to live OR they had a chairlift up the stairs. Take that into consideration when looking at rooms. Also, it looked as if there may have been 2 boys and one girl at some time. Also an infant.
Lastly-those “secret doors”- if they had maids, these were used to help them into bed, cover them, etc. So it was done quietly.
The thimble collection, shown at the end was amazing! The furniture, the beds, the door knobs were all amazing.
Triste ver tudo abandonado 😪
The contrast from one side of the castle to the next was just incredible!. Such pristine beauty and then utter decay. It really is a unique perspective of the ravages of time. Thank you for an amazing tour of this time capsule.
Wow! What a historic home, hard to believe a beautiful home like this got left abandoned, all the antique got left around the area, everything inside is amazing, thank you for sharing

Regarding the “secret room”. My grandmothers house used to have a room very similar and I think I have a very good idea on what it would have actually been used for. You guys compared it to a chapel and you’re close! It’s called a “parlour” which was an offshoot/extension of one’s “living room”. Back in the old days when family members passed away, they wouldn’t be taken to funeral homes but instead funeral rites and visitation of the body in its casket was done in the parlour at home! Families who lived in luxurious homes had this room specifically for that purpose, but people who were not so rich had their wakes/funerals in the regular family room/living room. It makes sense that the “secret room” has a churchy feel along with a piano etc because this is where wakes and funeral visitation would have taken place! I don’t find it creepy or anything though… it’s quite a beautiful thing really!
hey “Fangios”!! stop, you are little trash bandits!! you did not enter illegally. It’s clear that there is a caretaker who lives in the castle.
1, there is no dust on the floor, in many places, when passing the door!! the room has no more dust, and the bed has no bedspread!?! the bathroom is super clean!! the chair where you sat didn't have any dust either! Besides, you wouldn't have sat down if it had been dusty?? the African game with the marbles, in the veranda, has no dust at all???
2, are all room doors open? that someone opened them to you, so that you could only visit these pieces!!
and, 3,, I saved that for the end, hahahahhaha, we clearly saw a person passing in front of the windows of the veranda, when you do at the beginning, your little splich!!!!
ha yeah I forgot, the gas stove outside!! for the barbecue??? hahahahah!!! laugh out loud!!! keep up the good work. see you next time you laugh hahahahah, bye twinks!
Hi boys from Australia. As a lover of history & restoring fine antiquities it was nice to see that recent mail was found within the relics of this castle. Like all large estates & homes passed down to families over time the running costs are immense. There would be owners surely who sadly don’t have the time or money to bring this historic home back to its original state. Many aren’t sure what they can do as help is often very expensive but there are many people who would volunteer to get these priceless antiquities into boxes & catalogued where they can be stored safely for the owner. Many of us around the world would be honoured to help by purchasing anything the owner would like to sell helping to raise money to get this castle back to its hay day. Governments are happy to get these homes looked into & historically classed. With public interest rising due to your wonderful video work I’m hoping that the owners understand that we care for them & would like to offer any assistance that would start reclamation of their unique home.
Explomo’ boys Is there any way you could make contact with the property owners? I think it’s all very nice that we all get to see inside these private peoples homes & that “RUclips” financially benefits ….. So why not pass it forward & make a difference in someone’s life who obviously needs a helping hand. I wish I could do something to get this started.. Does anyone from France know how to contact these owners? We need to get this resolved as time is not on our side.
Much respect & thanks, Rhonda NSW Australia.
Hello Rhonda how are you doing today
You do not understand. These properties are left like this because all the family are all deceased. The property owners on the paper work/deeds are dead already. France does not have laws in place, unlike America, which makes a property owner that has died, must sell the property and divide it up among living relatives, unless it is willed to a certain person. If there is no official Will. then Probate law goes into effect. France has no such laws so property belongs to the dead people. Thus it remains as it was left.
the details on the wooden furniture are so beautiful. the sofas with the wood framing are so classy.
Near the door , that is for Holy/Blessed Catholic water, to be placed in the top part and then put with the faucet area into the bowl beneath. People could bless themselves when coming and leaving this entrance area. It was water' blessed first by a Priest' and brought to the home, or the Priest came and brought water when stopping once a year, to visit family to see how all was going and to bless the castle.
This had to be the most exquisite home/Chateau, (even more than this) in its day. Just love seeing this and all they left behind was unbelievable, Thank you both for taking this time to bring it to us.

Hi, Maureno and Remon, thank you for sharing this exploration. The figurines in the plastic bags used to be local souvenirs in many European countries, they are showing off their traditional clothing, like some kind of Dirndl and leather trousers, if you see what I mean. In German we call this traditional clothing 'Tracht' and it used to be worn Sunday to church or/and on holidays. I remember these figurines from my first holidays as a child, I think, so they could probably be from 1960 to 1979 or similar.
Great places and thank you merci beaucoup thank amaizing great and nice places beautiful cuntry

I loved that you found the secret rooms. The place went on forever- I’d get confused! I loved the beautiful stone? stairways that flowed and wound around so beautifully. The thing that intrigued me was the obviously medieval toilet!!! This little alcove truly enforces that the castle is truly 12th century or perhaps somewhat later. What a remarkable tour. What an awesome place!!! I envy you being able to explore it. Kind of hard to imagine living in such a huge building. Nice video as you go along. Big rooms filled with so many antiques!! I hope someone will clean out all the old wonderful items before the whole place falls in on itself. Glad to see there was actually a modern bathroom. You can almost sit and think what living there once was. I wish you had more history of the place, as to why so much was just left in place - it doesn't look as if it's been totally abandoned for very long. Great job!!

Can't agree more guys, truly a gem, btw love the way you translate konfituur :). Keep showing more of these please!
It’s nice to see these gentlemen doing this house they’re so professional they put everything back place everything back where they find it. They are descriptive words of the architecture, and the features inside in furniture are exact unlike some others that bundle through and don’t know the names of things and guess Adam and wear necklaces and nail polish and they just don’t seem to know what they’re doing so I appreciate thisvideo very much. Thank you.

Hi, great exploration! The Metal Container near the front door with spigots and the metal bowl underneath. It was used to offer water to guest or to wash the hands.
Thank you very much for answering their question. I was also curios to know! 😍
Yes it was. Travelling by horse was usually a very long journey, in every type of weather. Guests were fatigued from the bumps that hard, wooden wheels or steel caused, and were offered dust cleansing water at entry, which also allowed the home to remain cleaner. :-) Polite society offered this as customary.

Meu Deus! Me emocionei demaiiiiissssss! Queria estar ai tocando essas peças, esses móveis, sentindo a energia desse lugar, amo todo que é antigo. Maravilhoso. Móveis muito bem conservados, essas lareiras fantásticas.
I hope someone saves this place and all the beautiful antiques. I always wonder how this happens.
We sincerely hope so too!

👀👀hey “Fangios”!! stop, you are little trash bandits!! you did not enter illegally.
2, are all room doors open? that someone opened them to you, so that you could only visit these pieces!!
and, 3,, I saved that for the end, hahahahhaha, we clearly saw a person passing in front of the windows of the veranda, when you do at the beginning, your little splich😀😄😁😆😅🤣😂😂😂😂!!!!
ha yeah I forgot, the gas stove outside!! for the barbecue??? hahahahah!!! laugh out loud!!! keep up the good work. see you next time you laugh hahahahah, bye twinks!🤣🤣🤣🤺🤺🤺
This was the best explore I've ever seen! Thank you for showing us around. Maureno and Remon could you please address the moving figure in the window behind both of you at 4:28? There are many people in the comments who are wondering about this. Thanks guys.
This is actually one of our friends, who's a photographer, and he accompanied us on this exploration! Thanks a lot for watching and see you at the next one! :D
Hello Jean how are you doing today
Beautiful!! Thank you for sharing!! The best room was the 1500’s bathroom!!! Great work
Hello Glenda how are you doing today
I really like your explorations, guys. You both act very patiently with respect... you are curious and you care about materials, style, you think about centuries, about people who lived there.... And talk with The beautiful english.. I allways look forward to hear some charming french word in an english sentence :) Love it!
20:43 I know thos figurines with the various traditional costumes. They were very common back in the 80s and I owned some of them. Very nice to see those again.
Wonderful Castle...
Thank you Maureno and Remon..

Soo beautiful guys thank u 4 sharing from Australia
Beautiful history, should be preserved for many generations to enjoy
Agree!
Magnificent - house and antiques! How this could be abandoned is such a shame. Thanks for showing it. We are all richer for seeing the architecture and craftsmanship, and the history of an earlier time.
Hello Brian how are you doing today
Thank you so much incredible explanation of the crem dela crem of castles of such beautiful thing's and so incredibly clean..cheers guy's
Magnifique! C' est tres interessant! Merci!😊
An amazing place. I hope someone will save it. Your reaction to finding what was probably the original castle garderobe (the deep stone toilet) was priceless. If there was no moat, then there would be an access door at the bottom so some poor peasant would have to clean it out every now and then, and cart the contents off to fertilize a field.

It's mind blowing what they have left behind!!! Tens of thousands of pounds maybe more in just the furniture alone! And there were a couple of styles of building connected to the original castle/château you can tell by some of the stone work with brick . Someone definitely liked hidden rooms and stair cases ..
The beds I totally fell in love with. They get left because the cost of he upkeep and bills etc but a shame to leave it to rot!!
What’s really impressive is that these places ( mainly in Northern European) remain intact and respected, unlike here in the US where the a place like this would have been cleared out , vandalised and utterly trashed . Sad fact….
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! You bring up an important point about the preservation of abandoned places in Europe. While it's true that many sites in Europe are well-preserved, it's also worth noting that vandalism and deterioration occur here too. Sometimes, uncovering these hidden gems requires venturing into remote areas or overcoming obstacles like climbing and accessing sites with caution.
Having explored both Europe and America, we've encountered time-capsules in both continents. It's indeed a challenge to find them, but there are fascinating discoveries to be made everywhere. Let's continue to appreciate and respect these remnants of the past wherever they may be found! 🏰✨
Wow, what an incredible video! I absolutely fell in love with that ancient castle, and now I think I've discovered my life's dream - to purchase a castle like that, raise enough funds to restore it to its former glory, and turn it into a captivating museum for everyone to enjoy.
One thing that really caught my attention was the historical toilet with the deep hole. It's fascinating to see how things were done in the past; it could be repurposed into a warehouse or storage room. However, if I were to have the privilege of running the castle as a museum, I'd definitely preserve it as a testament to history.
I also noticed that no one has mentioned the ancient piano with candles. What a beautiful work of art! I even managed to jot down the notes to try and play them on my piano someday. It's heartbreaking to see such a masterpiece gathering dust. I wholeheartedly believe that it should be covered with cloth to protect it. Owning a piano has been a dream of mine too, but they can be quite expensive. It's disheartening to witness such a piece of history slowly deteriorating.
Thank you so much for taking us on this mesmerizing tour! It's ignited a passion within me, and I hope to see this castle restored and cherished for generations to come. 🏰🎶✨
WOW at the end of the video the top of the castle looked like it was built in the 1600s with all that stone & timber showing was amazing. Great video well done I enjoyed the trip. ✌️🇺🇸
Hello Sally how are you doing today
Thanks for sharing the most amazing video of the beautiful history of the CASTLE
This place should be preserved and kept as a museum. Would love to explore this place.
Wow amazing Video. I Love Lostplaces
Truly amazing video , definitely one of the better places you’ve both documented and showed. Looks amazing , what a incredible find.
I wanted to tell you guys, that I love you to working together just love it. And once again a great video to watch, take care love from Pasadena, Texas.
Hello Jessie how are you doing today
Maravilhoso..parabéns pela coragem de vcs ❤
Old buildings from years ago, are so interesant to see. Thank you.😀
The water dispenser thing in the entry was likely for Holy water. Judging by the recent-looking junk, the place probably hasn't been used regularly in about 20 years, but is now only storage. Great find!

Beautiful home! I absolutely love secret doors like that! The wallpaper really helps camouflage it haha
It’s a castle!😊
À bientôt pour de nouvelles découvertes !
Maureno
Loved it. And I have a metal fly, like the one you found next to that old radio, and thought it was a door stop. And then realized it is an ashtray. I collect them and I have 5 different ones and they are hard to find. It was so exciting to see one in that old castle.
