Richie Salan that twitch action is godlike
@@trermiki9 I couldn't agree more. This is my favorite scene and Dean Norris's delivery of "I don't know who you are. I don't even know who I'm talking to" is magic. Not only the words but his face and voice summarize the whole series up to that point with Walt's transformation to Heisenberg. A little over a year prior Hank would bust balls, push around an insecure Walt. Hank is 100% confident Walt is the evil man he's been chasing, but he still can't believe it. He's showing shock, fear, sadness and more. I'm so glad those lines weren't said with anger or said loudly.
Maybe I'm an idiot but generally speaking i feel like Dean has to struggle to get passable scenes. This is probably his peak in the whole series. Usually feels forced and like it doesn't come naturally to him. Maybe its some dissonance between how you want someone to act and the character, but whatever it is, he feels subpar most of the time to me personally

My favorite braking bad scene, Dean norris and Bryan Cranston are just acting gods, the close shots capture every little microexpression. When Walter says "that is not going to happen" his face change from being a scared sheep to an angry wolf in a single milisecond
And also Bryan Cranston was the director of this episode
Yup micro expressions for days!
Ah yes I love Braking Bad too
Dean Norris’ micro-expressions are firing on all cylinders here... that’s not something actors can fake; they have to be completely in character since those 1/15th to 1/25th muscle movements are involuntary. He is just as phenomenal as Cranston.
This is the moment when a scared sheep becomes an angry wolf.

It’s the exact moment Hank realises that the Walt he knew and loved before is gone.

I mean, he was his best friend after all. He was even willing to give away the 80 million dollars, his life's work, just so Hank's life could be saved.
True, but I also love that Walter is not afraid of him at all.
Thanks for this comment. This helps me to further appreciate the absolutely amazing acting that is displayed by Brian Cranston and Dean Norris.
The moment Hank brings up Skyler and the kids, Walter’s entire demeanor - even his voice - completely changes. He goes from scared to terrifying in a matter of seconds.
My favorite part about hank's reaction is that he isn't angry about walt creating and distributing meth, he's angry about the lives walt ruined and ended from what he's done.
Which means that if Walt just could have told the truth why he needed the money so badly, maybe even Hank would have helped him - before any lives were taken. Either way, Walt “liked it” this way… and he was “Good at it” this way
No hanks character is not like that, if you seen the pool scene. We're he gave his son alcohol hank intervened because he knew his nephew couldn't handle it. Hank would never let Walter walk away from his crimes.
And especially that all that happened was because Walt decided to get into the drug trade. Even Hank’s injuries were essentially because Walt insisted on working with Tuco.
It makes me wonder how things would’ve played out if Walter went with Jesse’s suggestion and went to the DEA for protection from Gus.
Sure, Walter would have to take responsibility, and face his actions, and maybe Jesse too. But there would be a much better chance at repairing the rift, and creating a solution for all of them where they are all in one piece. If Walter came clean, sure Hank would be disappointed that Walt became a drug lord, their relationship would still have a much better chance at repairing than it ever would’ve in Season 5. And I think Hank, while he wouldn’t approve of Walter’s crimes, would at least understand his motives given the situation given what was going on, before it ever got nearly as bad as Season 5’s.
The relationship would have a much better chance at repairing if Walter had come clean instead of Hank finding out, and if Walter hadn’t dragged on being Heisenberg and keeping the secret for so long.

really
2:34 This shot is perfect! The look on Hank's face, particularly the eyes. It looks like his soul left his body.
One of my favorite things in this scene is how Walt panics and jumps from excuse to excuse at 0:50. He goes from "You have no proof" to "Think about our family" to "I have cancer again, pity me" to "No judge would convict me because I have cancer again" and then back to "I'm not the guy, I just run a car wash" all in the space of about a minute.
Normally he's calm and collected because he's either in control, or he's in position to regain control because the person he's dealing with can be removed quietly. The only exception until now was Gus Fring, and look at the panic that created for him. There's no removing one of the heads of the Albuquerque DEA who's closing in on a notorious drug lord without inviting the full force of the FBI upon yourself. He knows he's cornered, he knows there's no good way out, and he's just trying everything he can think of to get out of that garage.
Every time I revisit this show I'm blown away anew both by the writing and the acting. The way you can feel Walt's low-key panic in this scene is phenomenal.
U seriously think he couldn't remove hank coz he was the dea head?? No dumbass he didn't send him to Belize coz he was his family
I don't think the conclusion of his plea is "I'm innocent I just run a car wash" it's "I'm no longer in the business. All I do is run a car wash now.. there's nobody to help by prosecuting me"
Then it's all the more amazing how Walt turns that around in this scene.
Hank becomes genuinely kind of scared after Walt refuses to bring Skylar and the kids, and is visibly perturbed by Walt's final threat.
Spot on. A lot of comments lionize Walt for being a badass with the "that's not going to happen" and "tread lightly" lines. But he's completely desperate in the first half of this scene when his enraged brother-in-law may possibly beat him to death over the betrayal and righteous disgust at his crimes. It's only when Walt reads that he's going to be prosecuted and will get out of that garage alive, that he starts with the posturing threats. Which he knows will hold weight because Hank knows that Walt is a killer and will ruthlessly eliminate threats to him.
“I will put you under the jail.”
Such a great line.

"I don't even know who you are."
*_"I am Heisenberg."_*
"You're goddamn right!"
The instant change from Walt to Heisenberg at 2:50 is still so chilling to this day.
I love the end of this scene. Hank knows the truth, but doesn’t really understand. He smacks Walt around, vents his anger, makes demands… but it’s not till the end of the scene it really clicks. If Walt is Heisenberg, that means he is willing to kill, bomb, threaten, and worse to get what he wants. He has access to money, guns, and dangerous people. There’s a difference between knowing and understanding, and it’s at the end that Hank actually starts to understand that he just smacked around a man willing to put him in the grave, thinking it was just pathetic ol’ Walt. Walt isn’t pathetic anymore; he’s a lion with nothing to lose, and you’re now presenting yourself as a clear threat.
Walt isn’t willing to put Hank in a grave. Walt would threaten Hank and blackmail him with the tape to get him off his back, but if he actually had it in him to have Hank killed he would’ve done so a lot sooner.
What ultimately happened to Hank is what proves this imo.
@@callinater6133 agreed but everything else they said is spot on. This is the scene where Hank really comes to the realization of who he is dealing with, not meaning Walt's identity but what he's capable of, & it's great. This scene is absolutely flawless. No music, barely any camera movement after Walt gets up, just Norris and Cranston delivering some of the best acting you’ll ever see on television.
Hank is confused, he’s hurt, he’s absolutely fucking FURIOUS, but above all else he’s afraid. His entire world was just shattered. When Walt tells Hank to tread lightly, he looks like he’s seen a ghost.
Speaking of Walt, he might be even more afraid of Hank. He had finally gotten out of the business, everything was perfectly fine, and then his worst nightmare comes true. Everything he worked for, everything he had to do, it might suddenly all be for nothing. At the same time, he knows he has to pick his words VERY carefully. He can’t say or do anything to incriminate himself any further (or at all, as far as he knows), and he has to try and somehow throw Hank off the scent.

2:48 the slow switch from Walt to Heisenberg is amazing
First time hank sees Walter as a man.
No. He had started seeing him as a man for a while now. As they slowly became friends over the course of the show.
But after this... he no longer sees him as a man. But a monster.
This is such a tragic scene. Hank genuinely felt like Walter was a friend and had his back. This scene shows hank that it was all a facade. His face when he says “ I don’t know who you are” breaks my heart. He deserved better
The lighting on hank's eyes always gets me, how they are fixed points of darkness, hatred boiling over. Top tier effects and acting as always.
i wish this clip was a couple seconds longer, the part starting with "that is not going to happen" is one of my fav. so many emotions on hank's face all at the same time, confusion, anger, and a certain sadness witnessing walt's true colour, as if he is going "oh shit, he really is the guy". we've never seen hank hurt and defeated like this, the pain is a proof of how much he loved walt as a brother, this scene is so heartbreaking to watch.
2:26 When Walt said "That is not going to happen!" his face is shadowed and wounded on one side and normal on the other. Hank gets to see Heisenberg and Walt merge.
5th season is full of extraordinary scenes
The whole show is filled with extraordinary scenes.
The last half of the 5th season is like Academy award-calibre stuff. Stakes are high, so well-written, acted and directed. And incredibly earned from all that came before it. Massive payoffs.
Hank was almost ready to let everything be swept under the rug. "have skylar bring the kids here and then we will talk" strikes me as something someone who would lie to protect their family would say.
It cannot be understated how brilliant Dean Norris' performance is in this scene. Hank is feeling so many emotions all at once and you watch them seamlessly flow one into the next, right on Dean's face and in his voice; all the anger toward all the evil Heisenberg has done - all the hate he holds for Walter for betraying him - confusion that a man he once thought was a good person committed such horrible acts - the disappointment he has in himself for not seeing the truth sooner - the sadness he feels knowing it was his own family that committed such horrible acts - the conflation he feels because he now knows Walter's cancer is back, and because turning him in will end Hank's own career - heartbroken because he knows that, despite being the right choice, turning Walt in will destroy the lives of his family. It's brilliant. Of course Bryan Cranston is brilliant too, but this is without a doubt Dean Norris' best work in the show. They should study this in acting classes.

Absolutely stunning acting from Dean Norris. What an underrated gem he is!
Fantastic editing in this scene. I love how they mostly kept Hank in medium close-up shots, but when he says that Skyler has to bring kids to his place, the shot cuts to Walt awakening his Heisenberg persona with "That is not going to happen," then suddenly cuts to a close-up of Hank at 2:33 - the first time we see him terrified of Walt. In that shot Hank looks like Walt put him in the corner with no space around to move, even though they're talking in the middle of the garage.
Just came here from the table read, where he almost just read trough his lines (Dean Norris). As if he was saving it all for this spectacular performance.
Hank could have played this smarter.
Like he could have told Walt he’s about to figure out who Heisenberg was because a witness has came forward, or something.
And set up a sting where Walt will reveal himself and he could arrest him right away.
Walt already knew that Hank knew he was Heisenberg. That's why he visited Hank's house: Hank took the book from his bathroom.
That sudden change on the tone of voice on that “thread lightly” part. Heisenberg can’t contain himself in trying to exert his dominant ego, even when trying to manipulate Hank into thinking he’s still Walter White.
“Say my name”, “I am the one who knocks”, theyre really great lines, but “then maybe your best course would be to tread lightly” is definitely my favorite line from the show
