  • Hi Guys, I review and compare the very affordable Klymit Staic V sleep pad and the Klymit Pillow X Large Versus the premium Nemo Tensor Ultra Light sleep pad and the Nemo Fillo pillow. Both of these sleep systems work great and have have their place in your backcountry collection. I take a look at the specs/ quality and price and find what is the best option for a good nights rest in the backcountry!!

      You're supposed to hold it a few inches away from your mouth and let it pull in air from around you.
      Otherwise you may as well have just blown straight into the pad.
      It called something like the bernoulli effect.

      @@ilove2laughnsmile you can make anything look difficult and you did a great job doing that, I only need to blow into my sack maybe three times lightly especially if you follow the directions about pulling it away from your face a little bit to totally inflate my pad

      It only takes like 3 breaths to inflate the nemo if you do it right, which is to say hold the pump sack at least 6 inches away when you blow into it.

    Great video and review. I have the Static V and XL pillow and like them both. Regarding filling the Tensor with the sack: you are not doing it right. You have to hold your mouth a few inches away to create a vortex: so your breath is pulling in outside air with it. It takes fewer breaths and less effort. Try it.

    Thanks Chris great video. Sleep pads are so hard to select. My personal preference. Seasons and average temperatures of use - R value around 1.3 to 2 for 3 season and 4 to 5 for 4 season, ground type, Sizeof pad, Noise the dreaded Thermarest, Thickness and reduction of headspace, moisture barrier. As you said a lot depends on your sleeping bag and ground conditions and temperatures. These both are good options. Thankyou. The s2s or trekology pillows are also good options like everything I guess, its what works for each individual person.

    I have the Klymit Static V Junior (short) because I'm only 5'0" and the Wise Owl Snoozy pillow. It's a memory foam pillow that is very excessive, but totally worth the extra space and weight. I just bought my fiance the Static V Luxe because it was the only pad I could find that was wide enough for his very broad shoulders. I've been contemplating the Static V Insulated Ultralight, but as of now, I don't need a 4 season pad, so it will have to wait.

    Hello Chris, I really enjoy watching your hiking destinations. A lot of which is close to areas I go to. Great gear reviews also. I must tell you though, that the way to blow up the Nemo pump sack is much easier than your method. I just received my Nemo pad a few days ago, and though I have not had a chance to inflate it yet, I had seen enough RUclips videos that I was aware of the inflation method. You do not put your mouth to the gathered opening, you hold it wide open and blow (usually 1 breath does it) into the opening from 6" to 8" away. It inflates the sack almost instantly, then you fold and roll it. It goes very quickly and doesn't fill the pad with moisture. I gotta admit that watching you blow it up made me out a breath, but then it just might have been that I was laughing too hard. 😉 I gotta give you an A for effort though, as you seemed to be giving that pad a fun for his money. LOL
    PS - My pad came with instructions, didn't yours?
    Take care, and keep up the good work,
    Tom

      I use the Static V insulated year round. and in the summer it tends to be warmer on hot nights because the insulation holds your body heat. But in return your nice and warm on the cold and damp mornings. Klymit sells 2 different sheets you can use with their pads also that holds the pillow. The nemo is insulated because its designed for the White Mountains and nights/mornings are cold and damp year round.

I do struggle with keeping air in it..BUT that could be user error. Good summer pad. I am not 100% sold on the Nemo yet, still trying to find the perfect grove on this pad. I slide around too much. The difference between the two mattresses is like the difference between thru hiking (klymit) vs basecamping (nemo). I'd hate to have to blow that nemo up every evening on a thru hike! I guess my point is, thru hiking is about being quick and minimal whereas basecamping is more leisurely with more creature comforts.

  • @elderhiker7787
    @elderhiker7787 4 года назад

    I think that the price differential is reflective of the R-factor. Inexpensive sleeping pads are just as comfortable as expensive if they stay inflated throughout the night, but they are only good for warm weather camping. If the nighttime temperatures drop down into the low 40s or 30s, you better have a pad with a higher R- value or the ground will absorb all of your body heat and you will not be comfortable. If you are a winter camper, an R-value above 5.0 is essential. So, bottom line is you can’t really compare these two pads because the are meant for different conditions. R-value is king. If you are a summer-time car camper, buy the Klymit. If you are a fall or winter camper, but the Nemo.

    • @basecampchris
      @basecampchris  4 года назад +1

      Yes the R value is the big differential here... for average hikers that BP during the summer mainly the Klymit works well for the price...recently reviewed the Klymit Static V insulated about $20 more and with an R Value of 4.4 so all season...just not extreme cold.

    Most serious backpackers would prefer Nemo. Durability is very important for long hikes. If you're only doing a few overnights then save some money with something else. Also did you notice the noise the Klymit made? Nemo is dead silent, and extremely comfortable.

    • @basecampchris
      @basecampchris  4 года назад

      The NEMO is the closet thing to a portable bed ( quiet too ) ...the Klymit get the job done at a great price...I go back and forth on these. It's always Price/ Quality / Comfort

    • @tiburonimbus
      @tiburonimbus 4 года назад

      I disagree. There are a large number of serious backpackers that use this. If you're talking about noise, how many serious backpackers do you think use a Therm-a-rest Neo* pads? Those things are noisy as shit, and yet very, very widespread. People complain about their lack of durability, and yet still use them as a light and high-R value option. I haven't had an issue with 3 different Klymit pads, and I've put a hell of a lot of miles on them. (If you count my Wife's, that's 5 pads total). I find them very comfortable, light, easy to pack, and have taken both of my insulated versions down to 0*F -- all without any issue. I'd be interested to hear what requirements a person has to meet, in your opinion, to be considered a, "...serious backpacker." Mind you: this is me disagreeing, providing a counter-point(s), and opening up a discussion -- not an e-fight. Hike your own hike, either way.

    • @ryeguy0306
      @ryeguy0306 4 года назад

      I appreciate the open discussion. I have done a through hike on the AT and the PCT, so I can only say what has worked for me, and the people I've hiked with. In my opinion, a few things are very important; your tent, your sleep pad, and your sleeping bag (or quilt). I have seen people on trail with old hand me down equipment, and doing just fine. But for me being 40, comfortable sleep is a priority. Not saying the Klymit wouldn't get the job done, but on long hikes you will notice any little thing that's not right.

    • @tiburonimbus
      @tiburonimbus 4 года назад +2

      @@ryeguy0306 I also white blazed NB 13 years ago, but haven't been able to PCT/CDT since due to job/family. The longest ones since leaving college have been the OT, and CT (and recently keep trying to get my JMT perms >.> ). I moved from all of my heavy gear and foam pad on the AT to consistently lighter options as I've aged. I went from a Sea to Summit inflatable, to a Therm-a-rest Neo Air (so noisy), to the multiple light version(s) of Klymit's Static V Insulated (and non for warmer temps). To me, it's the most comfortable pad I've owned/tried, especially with how much I toss and turn at night (in bed at night, too) -- plus on my side, I personally have no pressure points, and feel it flexes with my movement. I'm 38, so we're similar in age. I equate the difference in backpack sleeping pads to how people do mattresses at home: some like them soft, some hard, some in between, some water, some air filled, some need a mattress topper, some prefer memory foam, some can sleep on hardwood floors etc. Every so often, I'll take my dogs with me, hump my Nemo Galaxy 2p, take my old RidgeRest to re-live those early days... and chuckle (can't have my huskies puncturing my inflatables). Either way, I agree: Good sleep is necessary on the trail, and my Klymit affords me that. I have nothing bad to say about the Nemo Tensor, only that I think the Klymit Insulated is every bit as good. Hike on.

    Don't blow into the pump sack. Open the end and wave it like you are catching air in a trash bag. One swipe and it's full of air.

      I now blow into it at about 6 inches away....it's hard to wave it around with the mattress attached...that's what works for me.

    Could have inflated that first pillow right away and give specs but spent so much time with just useless bla bla bla, bla...much better presented second pillow.
    Overall not impressed with presenter apart from quality products

    Klymite sucks. Their pads are not comfortable

      Klymite is an affordable option...but not as a comfortable option.

      I find them very comfortable. To each their own.
