I am Asian. My parents don't understand English. They love ABBA songs. I started listening to their songs since the childhood. I thought ABBA came from America. My father said "No, it's Sweden". My mom is over 70 now, she set "dancing queen" as the ring tone for years. Until a few years ago I realised they won Eurovision. I checked wiki and found Sweden is the 3rd largest music exporter in the world. In the past, Sweden made me think of blonde, Nobel, Ikea and no sunlight in winters. Now I first think of pop music and ABBA.
Abba is the no.1 selling artist of all time in the UK.. They are the third most selling group of all time worldwide, only beaten by The Beatles and Queen !
ABBA's inspiration for "Dancing Queen" was George McCrae's "Rock Your Baby". They also recorded a version of the song "en español". They were the only pop group invited to perform the song, at the Royal Swedish Opera House, the day before the King's (of Sweden) marriage. They also performed the song live on their 1979 North American & European Tour, to a sold-out Wembley Stadium (London), from 5-10 November, which is on DVD. The "idea" for "Dancing Queen" began in 1974. Recording sessions commenced in 1975. Released in 1976, when it topped the charts (Nº 1) worldwide. In 1977, it became ABBA's first and only Nº 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart (April 1977). In the original recording sessions, there was a verse that they decided to leave out of the final recording. It is called the "lost verse".
ABBA originally came to fame from winning Eurovision but seemed to fade a bit and it was Australia who is credited with putting them back in the spotlight.
Quite surprised at you not knowing this song as it is probably the most famous pop song of all time. Abba were a worldwide phenomenon in the 70s and early 80s and only other group to sell more records than them are The Beatles. They were/are insanely talented and have a huge catalogue of hits.
there was an insane hysteria in australia where this concert was performed, if you ever get a chance to watch ABBA: The Movie you will see just exactly how insane the hysteria in australia was. It is sad that disco slowed down but it was only in america in the 80s it was everywhere, latin america, europe, india, japan then it evolved into the 80s HI-NRG and Italo Disco of the time. I really love the 70s disco songs it could go from slow and sexy with Love To Love You (donna summer) and speed right up to You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)(Sylvester), maybe you can react to both of those songs at some point.
I think ABBA is trying to bring back disco because if you listen to their newest songs they kept the same sound as they had in the 70's❕❗Like I have said before they rocked in the 70's and now their rocking in their 70's and I'm here for it❕❗
ABBA was a SUPERGROUP in their time. Two monster movie musicals are based on their music - “mama Mia” 1&2. Total hitfest manufacturing plant. Btw - 2 guys, 2 girls = A B B A
ABBA is one of the greatest music groups of all time with a catalogue of recognizable hit songs throughout their career that rivals any other group. The two guys wrote and produced every single song they ever recorded. There has been a Broadway Musical ( Mamma Mia ) and two successful feature films based off of their music ( Mamma Mia and Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again ). The Broadway musical began in 1999 and the two films had a combined budget of roughly $127 million and earned over $1 billion combined with the first film being the more successful. The blond female singer Agnetha was the lead singer for most of their songs and was married to the guitarist Bjorn for several years while the other singer, Anni-Frid did get to be the feature singer in some songs and she was married to the piano player Benny for several years also. Even through their marital troubles and divorces these four stayed friends and performed together. There was never any fighting among the ladies over who got to sing lead more or any of the usual bullshit that plagued bands through the years. The two guys have a unique writing style that has never changed. I greatly enjoy watching reaction videos here on RUclips where young people today discover ABBA's music and how great they were and still are.
Great reaction to a masterpiece by a legendary group. Regarding recent disco, Kylie Minogue released a very successful album last year actually literally called Disco, an awesome album with many cool tracks. Please react to “Magic,” “Say Something” and “Real Groove” from this album. Keep up the dynamite work!
ABBA are phenomenal in the studio, a million times better than live. My fave band of all time. Check out the recording of this song, a wall of sound hits your eardrums you’ll love it. Especially since how much you loved The Winner Takes It All (which by the way was a recorded version they lip synched in the video you watched). They almost never performed live on tv except on SNL from what I’ve seen.
There's another one where they're singing not in the concert but like in a small Club singing Dancing Queen you should look at that one as well. On this one that I'm talking about is only about four of them saying
They're a phenomenal live band, but if you have the time it's worth listening to the studio version of this song too for the full effect and nuance of it. The production, the wall of sound, the attention to detail and the precision are masterful. It's arguably one of the best pop songs of all time, definitely one of the best-produced.
"The music is high" has to be one of the most descriptive phrases ever written. Yes it means loud, but it also conveys upbeat, energetic, happy/euphoric - music that when you hear it you can't help but get up and dance. High in terms of drugged really doesn't make sense to apply to music. Musicians maybe so, but music, no.
It's also something I suspect a native english speaker wouldn't write. One of the benefits ABBA had was that English was their second language so they came up with lyrics that really worked, but sometimes didn't feel quite natural.
Well, musoc can have the effect of being intoxicating, especially when paired with drinking, which abba's music often was. It's been played in clubs and bars for the better part of some 40 to 50 years, at least in the nordic countries.
Thank-you for the response you posted !! Drugs have Nothing to do with or The Appreciation of ABBA !! ~~~ Their Songs, Lyric's, Live on , for so many of Us !!
"Music is high" in swedish the word for loud is same as high, so most likely that's what they meant. But considering the era, I wouldn't be surprised if it's both.
@@yt45204 Hello, how do you know this? Doesn't sound like you're smoking tobacco right now. Check your grammar in English. "The finer points of the English language ELUDE (no S) most Swedes." Capitalize the S in Swedes. "Most Swedes" -- That doesn't meant that it is Benny and Björn.
@@yt45204 They may well have tried drugs at some point, although I agree these guys probably kept to alcohol and ordinary tobacco for the most part. The flower power generation were typically born in the 1950s here, so a little bit younger. Usually also more leftist than Björn and Benny, at the time.
@@GaryNReese actually it is something that happened to Max Martin too. His lyrics for the Backstreet Boys “I Want It That Way” are confusing at best. He stated that his English was that good when he wrote it, and even tried to rewrite it to make more sense. Test audiences preferred the confusing version. Plus, high rhymes with “guy”.
As you like the music of the 70's and 80's you could react to the Stars On 45 collection, they are several albums mixed from different musical genres. Greetings from Guatemala City in Central America. Thank you for always activating the subtitles.
In 2000, an investment group offered ABBA $1Billion (with a 'B') to reunite for a 100 show world tour. Very few doubt they would have made their money back.
There probably isn't anyone in Europe, let alone scandinavia or the nordic countries that doesn't know almost all the lyrics to all of their songs. It's been the party music for a good 40, or 50 years here.
They were huge; in terms of global record sales, they were only beat by the Beatles. Granted, they were bigger in Europe and Australia than here, but we expected our music groups to tour and they didn't do that much.
While ABBA could easily be called disco, their music was loved by people who hated disco as well. They transcended disco and were popular in rock circles as well. Even some of the most popular rockers from hard rock to metal all admit loving ABBA.
"Fist time hearing MrLboyd Reacts" (as of now - ABBAS' 'Dancing Queen'), are as exciting as possible can be. Yes, I believe you're _the_ Master in this special realm. You're proving this to me, every time I listen to you, almost giving me chills down the spine! As Oscar Peterson said: "Exclusively for my friends!" I know you're kind of talking to me. Lol. (the bad English - please forgive me.) Greetigs from Sweden, @MrLboyd Reacts!
I can guarantee that Björn and Benny had no thoughts of drugs when they wrote their lyrics. I as a swede have seen ABBA live at a concert back in 1977-1978.
Have you been living under a rock ? 😆 I'll cut to the chase, buy abba gold and listen to smashed hit after smash hit. By the way the studio version of this song was number one everywhere on earth and its a super banger!
Back when music was about lifting spirits and having a good time instead of putting everyone and everything down, much like the entertainment industry as a whole. Everything has become so politicised and divisive now even the young can't escape and just enjoy that short window of time when there is no real responsibility between late teens and early adulthood and you just want to have fun. I feel sorry for young people today, even at my age now I would rather live back in the 70's/80's because there was just a much better vibe despite there still of course being issues and the world and people being imperfect.
The sold a few Hundred MILLION records In Europe. In the U.S. they were also very big, but not quite as massively huge. Had about six tens including a couple of Number Ones. Winner Takes it All, Fernando, and Waterloo were top tens in the U.S. High meant loud. Their English was not great, and they sang the lyrics Phonetically. True story. Basically the European Beatles. Hard to overestimate how big they were in Europe in the Mid Seventies to mid Eighties. Wonderful harmonies. This song has appeared in dozens of movies and TV shows. One of the songs that defined that period of music. Listen to the STUDIO version.

Your face, enjoying disco....precious!
The Winner Takes It All - a classic
I still remember falling in love with music by the band when us students within the choir at primary school from the mid 00s used to rehearse so many of their hits for the singing we did at the choir festivals during the conclusion from every term + I had first met so many of my favourite girlfriends from youth within that fun bit from every week with my years at the school as a child (a few I still communicate with online & all) so thanks for the memories sir 😎
In the uk in the 90s we used many of their songs as extras on top of hymns. Specially thank you for the music.
They also did an album entirely in Spanish. Wasn't real big in the US, but was in South America. Very talented.
Abba is the no.1 selling artist of all time in the UK.. They are the third most selling group of all time worldwide, only beaten by The Beatles and Queen !
Hard to believe you've never heard this song, but I'm sure you get that on a lot of songs. :)
Always loved ABBA.
You all know he knows specifically who ABBA is right he humbles us with great music and a specifically specific run down and qe love him for it 👍🏻🥰🥰
Art Bell R.I.P. , my brother. The best midnight talk show host the 90s ever had ! Art used this song to go to break with.
Really enjoyed seeing you...breaking into a smile by enjoyment
Disco was my era. I have a particulay memory of dancing to this song. Disco was awesome! I did a whole lot of dancing with my friends
"...and the music is high." I think pertains to the volume. A good disco joint had a superior sound system.
Another 🔥 upload
THey wrote ALL there own songs! WOW can't believe you've never heard of them or heard a song of there's on the radio Ever?!????
ABBA originally came to fame from winning Eurovision but seemed to fade a bit and it was Australia who is credited with putting them back in the spotlight.
The Song that put them on the map was Waterloo, you really need to hear that one.
I like your reaction sir, the song makes you smile 😊 in this specific type of content..
Quite surprised at you not knowing this song as it is probably the most famous pop song of all time.
Abba were a worldwide phenomenon in the 70s and early 80s and only other group to sell more records than them are The Beatles.
They were/are insanely talented and have a huge catalogue of hits.
My dad loved Abba, I miss my dad
They were fun to dance to as well. :)
there was an insane hysteria in australia where this concert was performed, if you ever get a chance to watch ABBA: The Movie you will see just exactly how insane the hysteria in australia was.
I'd listen to the studio version.
I think ABBA is trying to bring back disco because if you listen to their newest songs they kept the same sound as they had in the 70's❕❗Like I have said before they rocked in the 70's and now their rocking in their 70's and I'm here for it❕❗
ABBA isn't trying to bring back disco. They weren't disco. They had a style all of their own. It was a style that fit for disco.
_Voyage_ is not disco.
Love ABBA
ABBA was a SUPERGROUP in their time. Two monster movie musicals are based on their music - “mama Mia” 1&2.
Total hitfest manufacturing plant.
Btw - 2 guys, 2 girls = A B B A
Nothing is more disco than ABBA 😆
How can anyone not know ABBA?
Huge? They've sold over 400 million records world-wide
You will be hard pressed to find another duet that harmonizes like them.
@@GedUK Yeah, as a Swede, I cynically assume it's just a misuse of the word because the Swedish word "hög" means both high and loud.
Thank-you for the response you posted !! Drugs have Nothing to do with or The Appreciation of ABBA !! ~~~ Their Songs, Lyric's, Live on , for so many of Us !!
Love Swedes!!!
Plus, high rhymes with “guy”.
english has the concept, but we never quite use that word. turn the music up. the music is low. but never the music is high.
@@heidichristensen7919 What's wrong with “I Want It That Way”? (Yes, English was my worst subject in school.)
If you want some background there are a few documentaries you can look for ; PBS aired this one a couple years ago "ABBA Forever: A Celebration"
Yasssss! *twirls til tired* ✨👍🏽💃🏻✨
I would say, you're joyful, and that's why I'm looking for those moments where you're 'explodingly calm' reacts to the music we all love, one way or the other.
Yes, I believe you're _the_ Master in this special realm. You're proving this to me, every time I listen to you, almost giving me chills down the spine!
As Oscar Peterson said: "Exclusively for my friends!" I know you're kind of talking to me. Lol.
(the bad English - please forgive me.)
Greetigs from Sweden, @MrLboyd Reacts!
Watch the movies “Mama Mia” and “Mama Mia Here We Go Again” for delightful show with a lot of ABBA’s music and good actors… Your will love them!
My favorite ABBA song is your already did "the winner takes it all" But I would recommend "lay all your love on me" and "take a chance on me"
Knowing me knowing you
Im totally shocked that you obviously never heard of them and that song… the sold hundreds of millions of records in your lifetime on this planet 🙈
I can guarantee that Björn and Benny had no thoughts of drugs when they wrote their lyrics. I as a swede have seen ABBA live at a concert back in 1977-1978.
My take is that the music IS the high; the drug.
"they were big"
there were at one point Sweden's biggest export. in the country that is home to volvo.
They performed this to the British Queen.
Since you live in Spain, I would suggest their song "Fernando." It is a lament that takes place during that time period.
Second biggest selling band of all time. Only second to The Beatles
At one point ABBA was bringing in more income than their home country of Sweden.
I can imagine you describing the size of the fish you caught haha ha. It was bigger than Earth!!!
@@matslindroth6589 the thing is, it's not a big fish story. If you check out their history, in the 80's they really did bring in more income than Sweden.
I promise that if you go to an island in the middle of the Pacific and say Sweden , the immediate reaction will be ABBA.
There music was just FUN!.. pure fun and nothing but fun.. Still have very very fond memories!
It was al about dancing, and looking good, oh yea, forgive me, about getting LAID! Additional note.. none of the band spoke english well.. but boy did they fake it well! And yes, big orchestral sound it was a thing!
I enjoy your reactions Mr Lloyd but sometimes wonder what songs I must have missed in life as I can’t believe you’ve never heard Dancing Queen. For a different sound try Chiquitita. They donated their royalties of that song to UNICEF which has raised some $ 5 million for that children’s organization.
You MUST watch the music video
interesting note. They did not speak English initially. The songs were translated and learned phonetically.
That can absolutely not be true!! We in Sweden learn english from the age of 10 so if you go to Sweden you will find that absolutely EVERYONE speaks english!!!
@@leifwilhelmsson9113 Nowadays even more so than back then. It's true that Björn was really great at English but if you listen to old interviews, the girls but especially Agnetha always says how much she struggles with English though she learned it in school alongside German and French. All of her English songs she had help translating the lyrics with.
