Betty the baby goat is hopping after rough start!

- Every kidding is both exciting and emotional. Usually the mother goat does all the work and babies are out in under an hour! Usually they are all hopping the next day! Sometimes it’s a little more complicated! Radish had 4 kids, a tiny stillborn that we discovered the next day, and a big sack of water the size of a balloon inside her. There was not a lot of room in her belly which is likely why it took some effort to get all the kids out and also why after 12 years of having kids born, we had the first one with a back leg that would not bend forward correctly. Our first thought was selenium deficiency, so we gave little Betty White a shot of BoSe and a little thiamine in case it was neurological. Then we thought maybe it was a deformity of some sort like a fused joint that could not be fixed. But as we started to work the leg gently we started to get a bit of bend. Finally after a chat with our vet, we decided maybe it had just been squished straight behind her for some time and there was not enough room in there for her to move it. Sometimes the best action is to sit back and let nature take its course! We decided not to splint it thinking that would limit her ability to move a strengthen it. And sure enough, she is getting stronger every hour it seems and is starting to play with her siblings!! We are so hopeful for Betty and very much appreciate all the good wishes everyone who watches the live cam has shared!!! Hoping with some more time, you won’t even be able to tell anything was wrong! I know this is a long video, but I am hoping it will provide a little hope for someone who has a kid born with a similar issue!

what a precious baby! she's going to be just fine, you can already tell she's on her way! my friends at kitten academy had a kitten in the current litter with toes that curled the wrong way, and after a week or so they were completely normal. probably the same thing - just got a little cramped in the womb. lots to love to this little one!

It was so sad (I was tearing up) watching the little goat Betty with her hurt leg. But very happy in the end she was getting better!! Big hugs to Betty and all the babies!!

I had the honour of watching on the webcam when Radish's four were born. That moment felt more like Easter than anything else I have seen in the natural world. I thought I could see Betty improving the last couple of days, but now it's confirmed. Thank you Hope and everyone at Sunflower Farm for sharing all this with the world!

You were looking at her twin. Look closer in a few seconds she appears the same. She has a definite broken knee or leg requiring 2-3 weeks to be in a cast.
@@tataii that was my thought too but only way to be sure is get x-ray done as soon as possible to avoid further injury or misalignment and malformation from healing without proper support.

Hey partner, you need to line up and gently press in Betty"s rear lower shin and knee together, after preparing two measured flat rods on correct sides of her leg, placed between the knee and hoof, then use a masking or strong tape to fasten them together making sure there's no or very little movement. Then watch her closely for a couple of hours to see how she's getting used to it. Leave it for 8-10 days, but at least 5 days, then gently remove them with care. Make sure the attached points are lined up correctly compared with the other leg. Poor baby goat. Good luck
I have fixed two of my love birds broken sheens, one broken at upper knee as well after fan they stepped on deep caused it. They are better than ever. 💛❤💚👍
A good idea. I had considered splinting it. I will if she reaches the end of her improvement, but I am giving her a few days to work it out herself. I want her to build those muscles to get it right.

Betty's brother is so supportive. They are all very adorable.
One thing I realized the whole video was that her twin brother Bruno was always by her side more than the other two siblings... I realized they are of the same colour pattern he would stick with her as well as play with her more than the other two. But overall her siblings do include her ! Lovely.

I am so glad that what is wrong is fixable. She is so lucky to have you humans who understand a split would not help things, message and exercise will do the trick. Having the three siblings to hop with is just great. Mom, once again, is a good Mom. She looks just fine and only needs exercise. So much better than the one last year whom when I first saw it created an alarm in me. Just so many things did not look right and it did not make it. So much hope for Betty.

it’s so interesting that the Mom took care of her. very often babies who are born with problems are rejected. so with a great mom; caring, intelligent people; and her own stubbornness “i can do that!” - she did it. Yea!!!!! 😋🌿🌼🌱

I guess there is just so much room inside mom that her little leg just couldn’t stretch the way it should. She looks like such a little fighter that even a stiff leg can’t keep her down. This little sweetie is certainly making progress and will soon be as good as new.
Me and my husband had the pleasure of visiting Sunflower creamery recently while on a visit to the States from Wales. Chris and Hope were so welcoming and being able to cuddle ( or cwtch as we say in Wales) the little goats is something that will keep me smiling through the winter. I lost my heart to little Shirley . Thank you so much. 😍

Lil Betty looks like she is on the road to recovery...I had a Llahso Apso that I rescued and because she was kept in a cage for 2 years one of Brandys' back legs was stiff and we found out there was no cavity for her knee to fall into place so Brandy had the surgery for a cavity to be shaped into her bone and thank God she was fine afterwards. I pray Bettys' leg is getting better for her. Your little babies (and their mama's and papa's) have left paw prints on my heart! ❤️🐐❤️🥰
