It's important that parents speak to their teens about drugs and alcohol. Research shows that parents or guardians are the number one influence in their teenagers' lives.
Keep at what you guys are doing I like it. I think you guys are doing a good job at telling what parents do to help prevent their child's drug use and I am all for that.
It’s true all kinds of drugs and alcohol have harmful side effects and legalization is a debate about minimizing those harms. Even if the harmful effect of a substance is not yet proven that does not mean that it’s harmless. We support the evidence that avoiding substance use all together is the safest way to avoid both proven and potential health risks.
It’s excellent that you have been able to find a balance between your substance use and other activities. While many youth will experiment with drugs and alcohol, 86% of Ontario high school students will not use marijuana at all. The scientific evidence shows that marijuana use can cause: lung problems, testicular cancer and mental health problems. Addictions start with occasional use; why risk it?
I have read many studies about marijuana. I had to do a debate against the legalization of pot which was hard to do. I have seen both sides of the picture. The link between marijuana and lung cancer is still un-conclusive. There are studies that show chemicals in the smoke that help prevent the growth of cancers in the lungs. Although smoking marijuana can still negatively effect the lungs function and can effect someones mental health negatively, same goes for alcohol and other drugs.
I have been using marijuana regularly since I was 14 I am now 18 and do not have any drug problems. I occasionally smoke with friends around 4 times or so a month sometimes more, sometimes less. I rarely drink alcohol, I compete in manny sports and am very active. All my friends are in the same boat. It is all about teaching the importance of moderation. Its unrealistic to expect your child to remain drug free for their whole 18 years with their parents.

Thanks for the support. It’s all about creating a discussion with your children. Parenting is a challenge, but it’s a rewarding job.
