I was at Riot Games and we were reimbursed $300 for video game purchases every year just to make sure we'd keep playing the latest and coolest stuff. People have NO idea how much we're all rooting for each other.
Too bad the suits who make the actual decisions aren't rooting for us.
I think it's really just children or people who've never been employed.

@@cinystarr4657 It wouldn't help. The sad reality is that humans a tribal species and some will always need to pick a side and fight a war against their perceived enemies. Doesn't matter if the thing they're fighting over is real or not. It's the fighting that's important to them. It's been going on since before we became homo sapiens, and it will continue long after we've evolved into the next species.
People seriously underestimate how little those companies care about the petty and irrational "rivalries" of their consumer base.
That's true, but it's still company policy at the top to essentially keep it going. Starfield is an example; it should be multiformat - but it's locked to Xbox because MS imposed that stipulation on Bethesda.
Stuff like that doesn't help.

Echo chambers and internet drama create delusional people who have no idea how the world works or what the general public feels.
Hogwarts legacy is a good example for that. Sometimes it's amusing to see the harsh reality check that these people get when they are faced with numbers and facts that are completely different than what their echo chamber brainwashes them to believe.
@@dream8870 They went with the new IP for that as well, not one of the established ones (which is why I think this lip service to silence the exclusivity crowd so they don't get all riled up when Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Cod continue to be multiplatform because why would MS care, they get their money regardless). There's basically two sides from which you can look at the industry from a business sense; you can either go the Sony route, focus on exclusives to lock people into their platform so they profit from all subsequent game sales...or you do it like Microsoft and just, you know, buy some of the most successful IPs on the planet and take money from everyone which you can then funnel partly into sustaining your own ecosystem (which has a decidedly more multiplatform approach). Pretty sure if Sony let them, they'd sell gamepass on PS, too. Just because that's where their business focus lies.

I was the LatAm PR manager for Square Enix and I can tell you the “wars” were never a thing, even in those departments. Actually we had great collaborations with other publishers, brands, and of course developers, so these are people just talking out of sheer ignorance and emotion.

Nothing compares to the guy from a few years ago who tried to get her fired for attending a gaming convention on a weekend. He tweeted the head of her studio saying she should be working over the weekend instead and the fact she wasn't shows she doesn't care.

It's called "research". I've been literally told to play a dozen games in a genre to get my head around the key points. It helps you focus on what you're making and who you're making it for. Diversity is the spice of life, so yeah, play games no matter who makes them for which platform. There are gems scattered across all platforms.

As a Brazilian and a very old fan of your work over the years, all I can say is I’m sorry for some stupid people and keep doing amazing work.
Brazilian fans are among the worst in the world, I'm sorry to say. I'm not from Brazil, but I've always been a huge fan of Brazilian football and the national team. But it's scary to watch the reaction of the Brazilian fans when the national team does poorly. I've also watched a lot of MMA, and some of my favourite fighters have been Brazilians (I practice BJJ), but I hate watching events that take place in Brazil because the fans are so negative and aggressive. Thankfully not everyone are like that, but it's enough to become an issue.

Case in point, I would argue the original commenter was lying about the 'console war' being imaginary. For this, I will likely be attacked (despite being objectively correct) because people always want to be right, in person and online.
It's nothing unique to consoles or video gaming. People are tribalistic. They do the same petty sh-t with graphics cards (AMD vs. NVIDIA), CPUs (AMD vs. Intel), car manufacturers, sports teams; pretty much anything you can think of in which there's differing choices and some sort of vague competition amongst them will have obsessive fanboys who hate other people for not being on their "team" or not liking their chosen brand. Nothing you can do about it, it's just human nature to form groups around anything and everything and oppose people who aren't a part of that group.
To be fair its not imaginary. Microsoft is buying up all the gaming studios at an alarming rate. Their recent acquisition of activision blizzard for 69 billion dollars is pretty insane. Starfield hit some nerves cause it shows intent since it was a bethesda product. If all of microsofts now obtained games went exclusive playstation would fail in the usa. Regardless of what side you are on, we can all agree if microsoft bought Rockstar and GTA was an xbox exclusive, it wouldnt be good for consoles as a whole. You will see alot of people just switch to PC with controller to avoid not being able to play their favorite games.

@@kaanozkuscu5079 I mean, there are a lot of very real issues in the game dev industry right now, with respect to labor and job security. Not to mention, making a successful career in radio or TV aren't exactly safe bets either (although likely safer for most people than breaking into the movie industry). That said, it is viable, as long as you are willing to work hard and take a few jobs that aren't perfect fits as you get your introduction in the industry.
FWIW, I'm a software engineer, not a game dev, but have long considered moving over and have several friends on the game dev side of things (mostly programmers, but a few artists). Most of what's stopped me from making the switch is how much harder you have to work, the less cushy comp and benefits, and the competition to work at the top studios that I'd want to work for.
@@kaanozkuscu5079 You say that, but their concern and uncertainty is valid. The industry is ruthless a lot of the time, it's extremely difficult to break into and even once you're in, with all these layoffs and closures happening there's never any certainty that you'll always be employed, ESPECIALLY for QA devs in my experience. It's a huge industry, but that doesn't make it any less scary and/or risky to try and choose game dev as your career path, speaking from personal experience at least, obviously not everyone will have those same fears.
Did these crazy people forget that Alanah did VO works for Gears of War 5? She is a massive Gears fan but also love XBox as well like this is known. I dont understand why theyre so hostile about it.

@@WaveForceful, while this may be the case, this has not been my experience in the social games I play (which, to be fair, are limited in number). I have found that, in Fallout 76, as an example, most players are generous and welcoming.

It got dreadfully worse over the last couple of years, yes. It was friendly, humorous banter at first until some people and PR/Media departments started taking it way to serious and now we are living in times where people are receiving threats for stating their take on a product.

its worse because the internet, at least certain circles, cultivate actual tribal behavior, its literal sociological regression, and the worst part is that years ago you could easily turn off the screen and realize real world/real people are way different and less irrational, but now you see this pattern of behavior seep into it aswell, although its still very much a terminally online people thing. people who otherwise are lonely and since they feel embraced in a certain community, will agressively defend it against any possible "threat", and since these communities are filled with comfirmation bias, circlejerking, and yes people, they end up pumping each other up further down into the rabbit hole. its the same thing thats happening with young men embracing right leaning mentalities wich lets be honest goes hand in hand with gamer communities.

I'm actually really glad you addressed this and did it in this way. There is often a ton of talk about "don't give these takes air to breathe" or "just block and move on", and where there is some value to those tactics it just isn't always the case. There is value is shaming people like this, in making it abundantly and publicly clear that expressing opinions like this is hilariously moronic and out of touch with reality. Anyone who was bullied in school knows that if you "just ignore your bully" they will either become more aggressive or move on to hurt someone else. Ignoring these types online can be easy, but it can leave you stunned when you run into someone in the real world who unironically spouts views like this. Sometimes you have to share a workspace with a person like this or are otherwise unable to just ignore them. Being able to keep a level head and calmly pick apart these views is invaluable.
Doubtful addressing these issues solves any problem, because they never have before. Anyone that might seemingly be on-the-fence will just double-down. I don't think people understand that devs aren't business people. Devs respect other devs. The business people are making decisions like making Starfield console exclusive. Todd Howard didn't make that decision himself. As a developer, he just wanted to develop his game. He also wants to experience everything else out there so that he can continue to influence and hone his craft. There's a difference between businesses competing and artists crafting their works.

What a wild take; I'm glad you decided to address it and immediately move on. Also have you seen a lot of people experiencing their saves not loading/crashing? It happened to me last night and there is no fix at the moment 🙃
That's definitely a corrupted save file, i know a work around for this issue on older Bethesda game but i don't know if it would work for Starfield..
there is a mod called Save Cleaner on Nexus mods, it's a tool to fix a certain save file that would crash the game when you load it, if you want to get your save file back you could give that one a try.

one new thing I learned from you recently was that devs will see a feature or mechanic they like from a new game (like Baldur's Gate 3) and instead of being jealous or angry about it, they're usually excited and are like, "Let's do that in our next game!"
One of the coolest things on X-twitter is the way game studios celebrate the achievements of other studios. I love seeing Larian or CDPR people be super excited about Starfield. They are in the industry because they love games.
